Each cottage had two 10' x 10' bedrooms, with an entrance to each from the outside, a 2' x 4' closet, a wash basin, 100-watt electric lamp, cold-shower bath and, apparently, a desk and two chairs:

Nice exposition FW!

Can't help but wonder in the first image whether the room was equipped with a retractable roof or it had excellent "natural" lighting. Those closet curtains with the Olympic symbols were a nice touch too. Eventual souvenirs for the athletes?

Noticed the pajama pants worn by the chap on the right. Must have been seen as "exotic" by some Angelino's. Assume that was purely lounge wear. But, maybe a trend setter?

I had all but forgotten about the 2,000 seat amphitheater.
I tried to locate it in the aerial of the Olympic Village to no avail. Can someone circle it?

Do any of those metal traffic buttons still exist, in situ? Curious how they were affixed. Heavy cement/iron base?

And, on the subject related to streets (Wilshire) I have noticed this one, without an original attribution. Would like to locate a higher resolution version. May have been posted on this thread but don't recall this specific image. GW?

Well, the analysis of the article is based on the quotes from her book, yes. Not to belabor it, but I wonder, then, what motive would she have to make up a story like this? Not could have, but have. And was there anything else she wrote that was disputed. Was this a pattern? I could certainly see why Chandler would want to dispute it. In any case, just pondering it all as I'd never heard of this before.

Curious about Stanley B. Wilson, I checked back issues of the Times. Naturally, being a pro-labor candidate, Harrison Otis hated him and vituperated and bloviated against the candidate with his usual vigor. The reference to Wilson as a "theatrical poseur" is a bit rich coming from one of the biggest of the species ever to live in L.A.... Otis was never above getting bitchy about looks, either, obviously beside himself over Wilson's sex appeal. The article is much longer than this, but basically repeats and repeats Otis's hysteria.

We've probably seen this picture before. I don't have a record of its source (I thought it was USC, but can only find this similar one), but it seemed like a good time to (re)post it. It was almost certainly taken from the Town House, and shows the opposite view to the one above. On the left of Wilshire is The Arcady, mentioned recently by GW (see here).

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z.../LASimons1.jpg

A better view of Simon's Drive-In and the La Fayette Apartments. I'm not sure if the scene on the left is an accident or construction work.

The picture also shows the Hershey Arms, as seen in a recent post by FredH. Back in post #15408, e_r posed the question: "ALSO...what's going on with the second dome. Where was this flue in earlier photographs. -disguised within the dome?". In the detail below, the flues are clearly visible to the left of the second dome.

Beautiful pictures of Bullocks-Wilshire when the store was new. In those days and right up into the '70s and '80s, higher-end stores tended not to display a lot of merchandise on the sales floor (and what was displayed was usually on mannequins or in glass cases). The major exception to this rule was the "gift" department. But in clothing, and particularly high-end women's clothing, the practice was to display relatively little and have salespeople bring items out or have them modeled by live models as the shopper sat on a sofa or chair and picked from what was brought out for approval. Much better way than pawing through piles of clothing that's already been pawed through, if you ask me.

Funny. I was focusing on the building due west of the station, "Chesterfield's", recently featured here: http://skyscraperpage.com/forum/show...ostcount=19191 Can't help but notice how closely the Bank of America's architecture mimics the Chesterfield, or vice versa. Coincidence? (While I was not personally acquainted with the Chesterfield building, its loss seems significant. Wouldn't mind seeing a color photo of the building.

What is east of Simon's? Tennis Courts? Public playground, basketball etc?

Also curious about the ziggurat-like structure toward the left side (middle) of the final photo in HossC's original post. What did it house? Commercial structure? Another whimsical Drive-in? Public?

Looks like construction work to me. More Wilshire beautification. Notice barricade closest to the camera. To its right is another barricade that seems flat on the ground near where a tree or something botanical might be planted.

At bottom right hand of image is a sign for an overnight stop. The appearance of "Lanes" directly above, is that the name of the establishment, the proprietor, or an ad for a nearby bowling alley?

I found this better view in one of the pictures I linked to. It was just across Rampart Boulevard from the Hershey Arms. I'd guess at gas station, although I can only read the word "Associated".

One of the billboards says "Proposition 10 will ruin our beaches!" - does anyone know what this is about?
