I was just thinking today, has there been been a plan to have the Port Authority control the subway in order to extend it to north Jersey among other transportation consolidation in the metro?

I’m just thinking, NYC’s metro extends through 3 different states with many different political entities having to work together to get things done. The city and its suburbs in NJ and CT may never all be in one state but if a federal agency like the Port Authority is able to have the power to master plan the entire metro by expanding the subway and commuter rails, and building more TODs along those tracks.

Could also develop a federal transportation agency for the whole Northeast corridor. But it makes sense to give more power to the Port Authority.

This is a much bigger conversation that I'm not going to start here or now. But yes, ideally all regional transit would be planned by a single authority even if some operations on paper at least are by state i.e. the arrangement in Conn. Of course if they could transcend state politics and essentially create a tri-state authority that would share authority between the state's and be independent from the rest of the individual state government, that would be even better. Its the latter that would be required to transform the regional system and bring about the improvements and expansions that are truly needed. That and many more billions of dedicated funding. I have my doubts PANYNJ could be that body as their mandate is pretty specific. A tri-state MTA is likely the form it should take. NJ of course would likely fight this tooth and nail for no other reason than tribalism. And there you are. It would take an enormous amount of cooperation to hammer out such a thing. Its doable in theory but still unfortunately unlikely. For the most part other rich countries don't have to deal with crazy situations like this and that fact explains a lot about how transit around NY looks and is operated.

MTA to hold virtual town hall on Interborough Express in May


New Yorkers will get their first chance to weigh in on Governor Kathy Hochul’s Interborough Express when the MTA holds a virtual town hall on the mass transit proposal between Brooklyn and Queens next month.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority will host the online forum to update the public on the latest about the vision and take questions for their transit experts on the evening of Thursday, May 19.

I still don't trust the MTA to make good transit decisions. I'm betting they'll go with a 4th option, which is to build a streetcar

Not sure why they keep entertaining the notion of light rail... everyone knows this is going to be essentially a Crossrail spec'd line, i.e. slightly more robust emu's to satisfy shared r.o.w. requirements, but shorter and less "mainline" and more "subway" in every other respect... essentially a beefier B Division car. As for this rendering that keeps getting published, it's just one of the option illustrations provided by the MTA.

The Port Authority is even more poorly managed than the MTA.

If there were ever some cross-border coordinated subway expansion, I would hope MTA and maybe NJT would manage things. NJT is pretty well run, and MTA, while very bloated and flawed, isn't horribly run. Port Authority is just an epic mess.

Yeah, hopefully this turns out to be heavy rail. I also didn’t realize how Manhattan-centric the subway was. It made sense in the past when the city was mainly Manhattan, but Brooklyn and Queens have since had the lion’s share of NYC’s population.

if its automated light rail, I would have no qualms with that. High frequency without needing to pay for inflated labor costs

This to me would be a major project. It would be criminal if they didn’t go with HRT. It will have the ridership we all know that. It should just be another subway line interpreted with the system. Not a different mode.

It would be nice if they extended this new line to The Bronx (and SI but we all know that will never happen)

definitely the ibx northern terminal should be set up to go to the bronx at least, but i doubt that ever actually happens. the eastern bx is going to get theirs anyway with the four new metronorth stations.

staten is just a complete foamer dream, unless they plan to go on to do the full north shore line to the bayonne light rail terminal or to elizabeth or something — that would be an epic loop metro rail service dream.

After recently re-experiencing the LIRR's ops I'm now of the opinion that a fully automated system like the Innovia Metro 300 should be selected for IBX.

That's only the tip of the iceberg of potential.
