CaliNative, I'm so sorry to hear that your mother passed... It should be a great comfort to you that she is no longer in pain. A mystery pocket park. The seller believes this is Los Angeles and I tend to agree. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/924/qDhFBb.jpg eBay At first glance there doesn't appear to be many clues but if you closer there are several. . .including a bridge in the far distance. Hmm. .perhaps the amazingly tall palm tree will help us find the location if it's still alive. . |

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B2wPmFLCUAAHMFm?format=jpg Channing Thomson/twitterissä https://thedigitalbits.com/images/co...leopatra01.jpg DigitalBits This link has a history of it's roadshow engagements. Quote:
Here's a couple quotes from online sources: This one from Los Angeles Magazine: Did Cleopatra really bankrupt its studio and force the sale of the back lot Twentieth Century Fox purchased a large property in the hinterlands near Beverly Hills in 1926. By the 1950s, studio chief Spyros Skouras realized the city had grown around the land and that a fortune could be made selling off 280 acres for development. Sales began in 1957, three years before Elizabeth Taylor signed her contract for Cleopatra. So stop blaming the lady in the blue eye shadow. Heh! From an L.A. Times article: There seem to be more myths and legends surrounding “Cleopatra” than the actual Queen of the Nile herself. “You can’t really say what happened [with 20th Cent. Fox] was anybody’s fault,” according to Burns, who directed and helped write a documentary about Cleopatra and Fox. He says, “I think that is the most important part of what we tried to do. We also tried to dispel a lot of myths about the film. The film was not a bad film. It was not a flop. It was too expensive. It was a financial mess, but it made $24 million in its initial release. It was one of the top 10 grossing films of the ‘60s. It was by no means a failure on any level. It is one of the most beautiful films ever shot. It has some incredible performances. It is very intelligently written and deserves to be seen.” Quote:
One can disagree about the Brits playing those characters, but the actors themselves are talented. I didn't care much for Brando playing Julius Caesar much, either, in that early 50's film. Quote:
By the way, in 2020, it was reported, in an item from ShowBiz411: Paramount Studios has won an auction to take a new crack at Cleo with the “Wonder Woman” team. Patty Jenkins will direct her Wonder Woman, Gal Gadot, as Queen of the Nile. Who will play Mark Antony, Chris Pine? More recent news says that Patty Jenkins has moved to the producing role. Columbia (Sony) is also making a Cleopatra movie, directed by Denis Villeneuve, and based on a Stacy Schiff novel, and there's a third movie called 21st Century Cleo. A fictional story about Cleopatra in her teen years which starts out in Ancient Egypt, but King Pharaoh sends her into the 21st Century because of her "bad behavior." So if one doesn't like the 1934 or 1963 versions there's three more on the way to sample! |
And speaking of the Egyptian Theatre...

So, if you fancy a bawdy, comedy version of Cleopatra, you have a fourth option. You can see the trailer here. |
HossC, I've seen some of the Carry On movies, but not that one. If I'd known it was related, in a way, to Cleopatra I might have already. Thanks for that info!

There's also a fifth option if you're into early silent films. "Cleopatra is a silent film created in 1912 by Helen Gardner and the Helen Gardner Picture Players. The film, in which Gardner stars in the title role, was based on a play written by Victorien Sardou. In a series of elaborately staged tableaux, it depicts Cleopatra (Gardner) and her love affairs, first with handsome fisherman-slave Pharon, then with Marc Antony." And of course there's the 1917 version of Cleopatra starring Theda Bara. Sadly, only 20 seconds have survived of the two and a half hour long film. (2 1/2 hours! :stunned:) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...922/mvKtGZ.jpg "Many believe the film to be among the most elaborate and expensive of its time. The film is known for Bara’s risque outfits and some claim that her privates were exposed several times throughout the movie."..traumunddexzes I highly doubt Theda's va-jay-jay was exposed. . |

CaliNative, I'm so sorry to hear that your mother passed... It should be a great comfort to you that she is no longer in pain. Thank you ER. Keeping busy, getting out of the house, taking walks, and talking to relatives helps with the grief, but each day is a bit easier although I still feel sad at times. It is something we all go through as we age, and the reaper will come for us too. In the meantime, savor what life we have left. Anyway, immortality is overrated unless you are young or middle aged and in good health. Who wants immortality if you feel lousy? So, I am determined to carry on. My mother lived 31.75 years beyond my current age of 70, and was pretty active until the last few years. The bad period of decline and hospitalizations for various maladies didn't really start until a few years ago. Her mind was still active until just a month ago. She had a mostly happy and healthy life. |

Pioneer Take Out
As far as I can see, we've not had Pioneer Take-Out's corporate headquarters on the thread.
Pioneer occupied the building at 3663 W. 6th Street, NW corner with Ardmore Avenue, from 1974 to the late 1980's. https://i.imgur.com/cbmTSs9.jpg flickr.com - Paul Evieth The building has been a medical center since the early 1990's. https://i.imgur.com/L0gUU9Z.jpg GSV |

Theda would probably have to work out and drop a few pounds to be a big star today, or even in the mid 1920s. By the 1920s, the "flapper" ideal favored thinner body types, basically gamin and flat chested bordering on anorexic. Some flappers bound their chests and went on severe diets. By 1929 and the early 1930s, feminine curves and longer (non bobbed) hair came back into style. Garbo led the way when she came to America and became popular in the late 1920s. Mae West for a brief period exemplified an even more chunky look. By the mid or late 1930s, a preference for fit, athletic women came into style as more women participated in sports. Paulette Goddard, Hedy Lamarr, Kate Hepburn, etc. Fit, with curves, neither heavy nor extremely flapper thin. It approached the current ideal. Even Garbo dropped some pounds in the 1930s to satisfy the fitness trend. She would walk for miles, a practice she kept into old age when she lived in Manhattan. Mae West if anything gained weight, but she remained popular as a comic parody of herself, bordering on camp. She laughed all the way to the bank. Her films with WC Fields remain classics of course. Calinative. |

Pioneer had good crispy fried chicken. Much tastier than mushy gooey-battered KFC imho. I wonder why they went out of business? Or are there still Pioneer outlets hiding somewhere? Wikipedia says there are 2 left, one in L.A. and another in Bell Gardens I recall. Wiki also says that 2 former USC students from Indonesia opened up 200 locations in Indonesia based on Pioneer Chicken, but they call them "California Fried Chicken". I wonder if they kept the Pioneer Pete mascot? |

This must have been one of Bogart's earlier houses. Wasn't his last home on the westside, maybe Holmby Hills , Beverly Hills or Bel Air? That faux Tudor house looks wrong for Bogey and Lauren. They must have traded up. Bogey was the honorary head of the first "rat pack" that Frank Sinatra took over after Bogart died of cancer in '57. |

I've been trying to place the location of Brian Wilson sitting in a car in the 1970s.
I know the beach boys had a studio in Santa Monica around this time, on 5th Street and Broadway.
