I tried enlarging to read the street name, no luck it's just too blurry....our best clue is the Pronto Market sign....this was the chain's Downey location....

Nice work riichkay. You found the location in one.

It is the Pronto Market in Downey - 10846 Downey Ave. :)

The dapper fellow was parked on 4th Street with the Pronto behind him at the junction with Downey Ave.

The view nowadays with the old Pronto location arrowed.

At first glance there doesn't appear to be many clues but if you closer there are several. . .including a bridge in the far distance.

Hmm. .perhaps the amazingly tall palm tree will help us find the location if it's still alive.

The bridge, of course, and the medium sized street below and the bodega(?) with the SAVERITE sign on the roof. For some reason it looks like the eastside to me. Somebody needs to chase down a SAVERITE business license. Late forties-mid-fifties

A Galaxie convertible no less. If the car is still around, that will add to the value considerably.

I would never have guessed the name of that street is "New" St., either!

The building the man was in front of is obviously changed now, but I like that the two houses across New St. are still there.
The one closest to the camera with Christmas decorations.

It was 20th Century Fox and there's a lot of misconception about the idea that Cleopatra was a flop and the reason that forced Fox to start selling off it's backlot and such in Century City. The guy who wrote the book about Fox and it's backlot set the record straight, according to him, but when something becomes a "fact" because it gets repeated so often it's hard to change those "alternate facts."

Here's a couple quotes from online sources:

This one from Los Angeles Magazine:

Did Cleopatra really bankrupt its studio and force the sale of the back lot Twentieth Century Fox purchased a large property in the hinterlands near Beverly Hills in 1926. By the 1950s, studio chief Spyros Skouras realized the city had grown around the land and that a fortune could be made selling off 280 acres for development. Sales began in 1957, three years before Elizabeth Taylor signed her contract for Cleopatra. So stop blaming the lady in the blue eye shadow.

Heh!

From an L.A. Times article:

There seem to be more myths and legends surrounding “Cleopatra” than the actual Queen of the Nile herself.

“You can’t really say what happened
[with 20th Cent. Fox] was anybody’s fault,” according to Burns, who directed and helped write a documentary about Cleopatra and Fox. He says, “I think that is the most important part of what we tried to do. We also tried to dispel a lot of myths about the film. The film was not a bad film. It was not a flop. It was too expensive. It was a financial mess, but it made $24 million in its initial release. It was one of the top 10 grossing films of the ‘60s. It was by no means a failure on any level. It is one of the most beautiful films ever shot. It has some incredible performances. It is very intelligently written and deserves to be seen.”

I'm going to disagree. The first time I saw this film was on VHS and it was pan & scanned, not in it's widescreen format. So when AMPAS showed the film in it's Great to Be Nominated series about 15-20 years ago I went to see it. On it's own terms it's excesses are delightful. It's never dull and visually stunning; compelling. I loved seeing it with a sold-out audience, too. I know at the time it was released that critics were lying in wait for it because of all the things in the press at the time. Can't imagine if the internet had been around then.

One can disagree about the Brits playing those characters, but the actors themselves are talented. I didn't care much for Brando playing Julius Caesar much, either, in that early 50's film.

I do equally enjoy this art deco version of Cleopatra! (Which also did not premiere at the Egyptian.)

By the way, in 2020, it was reported, in an item from ShowBiz411: Paramount Studios has won an auction to take a new crack at Cleo with the “Wonder Woman” team. Patty Jenkins will direct her Wonder Woman, Gal Gadot, as Queen of the Nile. Who will play Mark Antony, Chris Pine? More recent news says that Patty Jenkins has moved to the producing role.

Columbia (Sony) is also making a Cleopatra movie, directed by Denis Villeneuve, and based on a Stacy Schiff novel, and there's a third movie called 21st Century Cleo. A fictional story about Cleopatra in her teen years which starts out in Ancient Egypt, but King Pharaoh sends her into the 21st Century because of her "bad behavior."

So if one doesn't like the 1934 or 1963 versions there's three more on the way to sample!

The Egyptian Theatre is still under renovation, so festivities are at the Hollywood Heritage Museum, set amidst a variety of actual artifacts from the 1922 movie palace - the first of its kind on Hollywood Boulevard. The extensive exhibit will include items from the Hollywood Heritage collection, as well as material from other collectors from 1922 to the end of the MGM roadshow period. The exhibit will also highlight the pioneers who contributed to the success of Grauman's Hollywood theatres.

In 1964, the British 'Carry-On' movie series also tackled the story in 'Carry on Cleo'. The films were always made on a shoestring budget, and this one utilized the abandoned 'Cleopatra' sets at Pinewood Studios. From IMDb, "According to Michael Caine. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor loved "Carry on Cleo" and would often show the film to guests on there Mediterranean yacht. Elizabeth would joke it was a better film than Cleopatra."

So, if you fancy a bawdy, comedy version of Cleopatra, you have a fourth option. You can see the trailer here.

There's also a fifth option if you're into early silent films.

Video Link

"Cleopatra is a silent film created in 1912 by Helen Gardner and the Helen Gardner Picture Players. The film, in which Gardner stars in the title role, was based on a play written by Victorien Sardou.
In a series of elaborately staged tableaux, it depicts Cleopatra (Gardner) and her love affairs, first with handsome fisherman-slave Pharon, then with Marc Antony."

And of course there's the 1917 version of Cleopatra starring Theda Bara. Sadly, only 20 seconds have survived of the two and a half hour long film. (2 1/2 hours! :stunned:)

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...922/mvKtGZ.jpg

"Many believe the film to be among the most elaborate and expensive of its time. The film is known for Bara’s risque outfits
and some claim that her privates were exposed several times throughout the movie."
..traumunddexzes

I highly doubt Theda's va-jay-jay was exposed.

I grew up in England and Carry On Cleo is always showing on British TV. It's one of the better Carry On movies and definitely worth watching if you can find it streaming somewhere. My "Just Watch" app says that, unfortunately, it's not available to stream at the moment.

Thank you ER. Keeping busy, getting out of the house, taking walks, and talking to relatives helps with the grief, but each day is a bit easier although I still feel sad at times. It is something we all go through as we age, and the reaper will come for us too. In the meantime, savor what life we have left. Anyway, immortality is overrated unless you are young or middle aged and in good health. Who wants immortality if you feel lousy? So, I am determined to carry on. My mother lived 31.75 years beyond my current age of 70, and was pretty active until the last few years. The bad period of decline and hospitalizations for various maladies didn't really start until a few years ago. Her mind was still active until just a month ago. She had a mostly happy and healthy life.

e_r, said Auto Camp was apparently about where 3rd St. would intersect with PCH in Huntington Beach if 3rd St. went all the way through. Here's where 3rd. St. stops now (at Walnut St.); a block forward is PCH, with the beach and ocean beyond. (On PCH, this is about where the old Golden Bear club used to be.) In the other direction, 3rd St. in due course (a couple of blocks) reverts to its old name Lake St. As it happens, I'm extremely familiar with this location.

Sounds like these auto courts would make a solution for homelessness, at least for those with cars and tents. Cheap even in the 1920s and 1930s. The more recent Kampgrounds of America (KOA) is a modern analog, although their prices have climbed beyond the reach of most homeless.

Theda would probably have to work out and drop a few pounds to be a big star today, or even in the mid 1920s. By the 1920s, the "flapper" ideal favored thinner body types, basically gamin and flat chested bordering on anorexic. Some flappers bound their chests and went on severe diets.

By 1929 and the early 1930s, feminine curves and longer (non bobbed) hair came back into style. Garbo led the way when she came to America and became popular in the late 1920s. Mae West for a brief period exemplified an even more chunky look.

By the mid or late 1930s, a preference for fit, athletic women came into style as more women participated in sports. Paulette Goddard, Hedy Lamarr, Kate Hepburn, etc. Fit, with curves, neither heavy nor extremely flapper thin. It approached the current ideal. Even Garbo dropped some pounds in the 1930s to satisfy the fitness trend. She would walk for miles, a practice she kept into old age when she lived in Manhattan.

Mae West if anything gained weight, but she remained popular as a comic parody of herself, bordering on camp. She laughed all the way to the bank. Her films with WC Fields remain classics of course.

Calinative.

Pioneer had good crispy fried chicken. Much tastier than mushy gooey-battered KFC imho. I wonder why they went out of business? Or are there still Pioneer outlets hiding somewhere? Wikipedia says there are 2 left, one in L.A. and another in Bell Gardens I recall. Wiki also says that 2 former USC students from Indonesia opened up 200 locations in Indonesia based on Pioneer Chicken, but they call them "California Fried Chicken". I wonder if they kept the Pioneer Pete mascot?

This must have been one of Bogart's earlier houses. Wasn't his last home on the westside, maybe Holmby Hills , Beverly Hills or Bel Air? That faux Tudor house looks wrong for Bogey and Lauren. They must have traded up. Bogey was the honorary head of the first "rat pack" that Frank Sinatra took over after Bogart died of cancer in '57.

Sadly, this whole area has been replaced with modern buildings. (the Golden Bear was torn down in the 1980s :()

Most everyone here is aware the Golden Bear became a popular venue for live music in the 1960s, 70s and 80s.

It's the same car but the cigar sign is different. How'd they do that?

Looks kinda Park La Brea-ish... that's my guess.

It's shaped like this building: https://www.google.com/maps/uv?pb=!1...EQoip6BQiDARAD

Wow - yep I think you are probably correct! Likely the Park La Brea Apartments.

This is my grandmother, and they were living near Miracle Mile at the time in '59, so it's especially likely. I do wonder if the parking lot location where she's standing can be deduced.

The cigars are in a big trunk. The second pic shows it loaded the other way around on the vehicle.

Did such classic L.A. rock groups like the Doors and the Eagles ever play there? Or even OC's own the Beach Boys? Maybe the venue was too small, but so was the Whisky.

Thanks! Not sure if it's a hand or a comet, but I will ask my mom if she knows or recalls that piece of her mom's jewelry.

My father took this photograph in Venice, circa 1979 or possibly early 1980.

I wonder if anybody can figure out what street this would've been on.

I'll be willing to bet it most everything looks different but I wonder if there are any clues...

There is a street sign on the right side near the top, but chances seem slim anyone could decipher that!

i lived in Venice in the Oakwood area in 81-83 and boy does this look familiar. i say its in the traffic circle area, maybe Grand Blvd near Andalusia

That appears to be a 1979 Olds Toronado with temporary license, so the late 79 early 80 date fits.

Cheers,

Earl

I've been trying to place the location of Brian Wilson sitting in a car in the 1970s.
I know the beach boys had a studio in Santa Monica around this time, on 5th Street and Broadway.

I was thinking maybe it was in the parking lot there, by the old dearly departed Henshey's building, but it doesn't quite line up.

Curious if anybody has any ideas based on the buildings in the pic.

I happened upon these five slides on eBay late last week...The place doesn't look familiar to me and there is no address given.

I believe this is the front entrance.

The lobby looking out toward the street.

I'm pretty sure this is the courtyard looking towards the front lobby. (the tall building you see must be directly across the street)

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/nRRjks.jpg

The last slide is another street view (with bad lighting) taken from a different angle.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/h3WcLa.jpg

Does anyone recognize this place?

.

The sign looks like it's painted on the side of a trunk (there seem to be brackets on the corners). I'm guessing they have 2 different signs painted on opposite sides
