The Garlands were still at 815 (at right) in 1940; their real estate firm sold the Walton house next door in 1932...it appears to have been demolished within the decade.

The firm was famous for its population projections in ads; it wouldn't be until the '50s that L.A. achieved 2,250,000 inhabitants. LAT/Babcock Ancestry

I'm not sure when 815 West Adams were demolished, but it wasn't recently--its site and 755's have been part of a parking lot for years if not decades. I'm not in L.A. so can't drive by to see if anything is now being built there, though neither Google or Bing street views indicate any building activity that I can see. 755 was actually built on what was originally numbered lot 1 of St. James Park, 815 on lots 3 and 4. 825 West Adams was built on the subdivision's original lots 7, 8 and 9 and was known as the Bilicke house before Paul Tobeler's tenancy. (The Bilickes were later at #7 Berkeley Square.)

Ninth and Spring - The Garland Building.

Questions . . . questions . . .

Curious about this building's bedding. Not clear what it rests on, bedrocked pilings, bricks and mortar, or maybe even both. To the right in the first photograph there are white brick structures that vaguely resemble backyard incinerators. (Significance of initials "GD," graffiti?) Assembled bricks may may be preexisting supports for a predecessor structure or adjacent structure/roadbed. It looks like they did not survive by the third photo. Fourth photo shows steel beams protruding from the ground, suggesting they are anchored to . . . something.

(What did this building replace?)

these series of construction phased photos are just great...

In the first photo the old brick pilasters were probably supported on concrete piers. By the third photo the pilasters have been removed and shoring placed along the sides to prevent caving. The steel columns would have been anchored to reinforced concrete piers which may have been 30 feet or more deep depending on the depth of bedrock.
I would presume they secured the three street exposures with a concrete retaining wall but the building supports on the adjacent brick buildings would have been independent so not to place any stress on the brick.

BelmontB, glad you agree! (Just wish the images were larger.)

I wonder what Chase Bank has done with their half dome?

And just to digress a little further from Schaber's Cafeteria, the chickenboy.com owner, Amy Inouye, of Future Studio,
was instrumental in getting two historic rooftop signs re-lit in Highland Park / Garvanza in 2012:

Thank you so much sopas ej.

Plaza Substation looked HUGE before the church and Biscailuz Building were built in the mid-20s. The Methodists bought and demolished the Olvera Adobe in 1916 and first built some one-story buildings. I guess that's what shown here:

USC dates the photo to no later than 1929, but looking at the cars (including one I cropped out on the right), I think 1933 would be closer. The LA
County Assessor seems to indicate The President was remodeled in 1935; perhaps that's when the sign was added. It looks like they redid the
entrance, too (compare with GSV):

A lovely 90 yr old Eunice (still a saleslady at StudioCity celebrity stationers) in the middle 1970s told me of accompanying mother there for it's Jurgensen's type "fancy grocery" experience. Even earlier she rememberd arriving in a buggy to get produce at an open air place at corner of 9th and Figueroa --I'd mentioned being in the Young building to shop at Andrew's Industrial Hardware that same afternoon when she gave me it's original glory story--

Previously posted images seem to have evaporated. If this is duplication, sorry.

In bottom photo notice the tower's top seems to be adorned with a glass globe, or some sort of spherical framework. Expect it may have been illuminated. Reminds me of a plasma ball popular in the '80s. In later images, e.g., first photo, the globe was replaced by the more typical metal orb.

A beautiful 1925 Chevrolet and a very early picture on another famous tower...

Those retaining walls don't look like they're going to last...

In bottom photo notice the tower's top seems to be adorned with a glass globe, or some sort of spherical framework. Expect it may have been illuminated. Reminds me of a plasma ball popular in the '80s. In later images, e.g., first photo, the globe was replaced by the more typical metal orb.

The way things were in '32, evidently before Merlo's (to the west - or left).

The motion picture playing at the Fairfax is the Technicolor musical SALLY, released 12 January 1930. The photos most likely date from 1930 and not 1932. I've discovered the archives have incorrectly dated many photos, some by as much as five years.
