I've been trying to figure out how to settle whether this is in fact a photo from the Santa Maria Greyhound station. All I have discovered so far is that the current station at 400 E Boone Street is fairly new. Before that there was a "temporary" station at 755 W. Cypress Street from 2001 to late 2016. But where did it stand in the 1950s?

I think you are right that this is Santa Maria. Looks to me like this is the Santa Maria Greyhound station once addressed 315 N Broadway--now numbered 313. ER's vintage interior view seems to match the openings and shapes of 313, and I can imagine the outside sign once having read GREYHOUND or BUS STATION. Noting what looked like a Pegasus logo, someone here wondered if the building across the street in the vintage view might have been a Mobil station...seems it might instead have been Jerry's Hancock service at 320 N B'way--the flying horse instead being a rooster.

Interesting form line for the Rooster there GW ... but I'm still putting my money on Flying Horse for the win. :)

OK...yes, more like a flying horse than a rooster...digging a little further, I've found that Jerry's Hancock service of 320 N B'way, SM, was, sometime before 1958, DON'S MOBIL SERVICE...listed at 320 N B'way, SM, in 1948.... so, horse became rooster....

A photocopy of a letter was sent to me, but I never scanned it, since it wasn't a photo - I guess I subsequently forgot about it. Well, I just came across this photocopy now, and it includes a bit of information.

I've written about my great-uncle Hubert here before. He was a bit part actor, but primarily a stuntman. Here he is getting clobbered over the head by Oliver Hardy:

https://i.imgur.com/eSCo76p.gif

This is a photo of Hubert I never posted before. The letter I found today says that it was taken at the Auto Wheel Cafe:

https://i.imgur.com/dcBwieZ.jpg

Hubert's son Bert, the child on the right (above) is the young man on the left in the photo below, so the photo above would have been taken some time earlier.

https://i.imgur.com/ayhtcxC.jpg

I know that a photo of a man kneeling by an oak tree doesn't reveal much location information in a city literally called Thousand Oaks! But the letter (written by the son of Bert and the grandson of Hubert) says that he was taken to visit the tree, and that Bert said “we used to have a swing on that tree.” No date for this event is given, but I wonder if the tree outlived the cafe itself...

While I cannot pin down the location of the actual café, I did find info as to where they lived in the area. Maybe someone who has more time can figure out the name changes in the roads and pin down the location of their home. They did live in the same place for many years.

Diltz
Emma Evertson was born in Kentucky in 1875. She married Hershel Diltz, who was born in Illinois in about 1870. They were married in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1894. Hershel is also listed as Budge Hershel and he may have also gone by Buddy. They two sons, Hubert, 1897- 1957 and David, born in 1916.
By 1920 they had moved to California and were living in Glendale, at 1664 Glendale Avenue, on rented property that is now Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Hershel was working as a house carpenter.
From 1930 onward, they are listed at RFD 1, box 63, Camarillo. The census listings show RFD 1 -Camarillo and Thousand Oaks. The 1930 Census lists Emma as being the owner of a restaurant. Budy (Buddy or Budge) is still listed as a house carpenter, son David, then 14 is living there as well. Budge’s father was also a carpenter. This census lists the place as Conejo District, Camarillo Township and Thousand Oaks School District.
Emma appears in the 1940 Census, living in Camarillo on RR 1. In that census she is listed as living with a grandson, Delmar, 14. She is 66 and there is no occupation listed. She is widowed by that time. Budge had died on April 17, 1937. Also listed as living on the same property at that time are a Jack Cavanaugh, 40, who was apparently operating the Café and his wife Betty. Joan Carney, a cousin, age 13, is also listed, as is a housekeeper Lyenn Binkley.

Emma died on May 4, 1942 in Ventura County and is buried in Ivy Lawn Cemetery in Ventura. Budge, who had died in 1937 is also buried in Ivy Lawn. Find a Grave does not have a picture of their gravesite but does have one for Budge’s father Lyman Diltz, and who served in the Civil War with the 105th Indiana Volunteers.

Nice shot of the confluence of tracks at the north end of the 'Cornfield' (out-of-frame to the left) and the crossover to the Taylor Yard trestles here at Lincoln Heights and up ahead at the Arroyo Seco overpass. The white building on the east side of the 'unimproved' LA river is the Lincoln Heights jail.

Not aware that this March 1938 view of the Santa Fe Bridge over Arroyo Seco paralleling the Pasadena Ave Bridge has been seen on NLA - yet.

(Some years back we had frame grabs from Stanley Kubrick's "The Killing" posted here showing the interior of the Hollywood Greyhound Station as it looked in 1956, but I'm unable to find that post.)

Thanks, GaylordWilshire, for the follow-up providing the former address of the Greyhound station. I think we have a consensus now that the photo was taken in Santa Maria.

Also a tip o' the hat to KevinW for what appears to be an accurate reading of the travel board, and to CityBoyDoug for the map that provides confirmation.

Yep, Tail O' the Cock

TOR'S MENU

The evergreens outside the window in the luncheon photo make me think the Valley more than La Cienega Blvd.
Also....the trees (outside the window) are somewhat similar to the trees shown in front of the valley Tail O the Cock. (refer to color postcard #2)

update #2

I just read that the La Cienega 'Tail O' the Cock was extensively decorated at Christmas time. (at times there was even a live Santa on the roof!)
Could the 'trees out the window' be seasonal decorations? I ask, because it looks like there's 'snow' out that window too.
(or is it my imagination playing tricks on me again:shrug:)

The mania for private swimming pools began after World War I and may well be directly linked to Hollywood, which not only glamorized them on film, but made them a symbol of status within the film colony.

Mercury bi-chloride garners headlines? A precursor to even bigger scandals.

Lon' Cheney Jr's father met a tragic end, dying from lung cancer and a throat hemorrhage. But evidently, he had to endure the tragedy of his first wife's attempted suicide in or at the Majestic Theater.

Quote:

[Frances Cleveland Creighton] and Lon had an increasingly rocky marriage and in April 1913, she went to the Majestic Theater in downtown Los Angeles where Lon was working and attempted suicide by drinking a bottle of the poisonous corrosive mercury bi-chloride. She survived but her main talent, a beautiful singing voice, was gone forever. They divorced a year later and she willingly gave Lon custody of their son. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0151590/bio
