I think that building looks perfectly fine. By the way, what was the old color scheme. It does appear to have one in the b&w photo. |
Liked your post NCD!

I think originally it was just concrete masquerading as stone. The present scheme would not be my first choice, but it looks very cared for, ditto the landscaping and railing. (if it had to be painted, I would have gone with a nice putty color with the trim picked out in cream. Don't understand the missing windows. There's some trim missing at the parapet too.) Quote:

[QUOTE=HossC;7110395]This wasn't the image I originally planned to use to celebrate 1500 pages of NLA, but when I saw this building with a prominent "1500" blade sign, I knew this was the one to modify :).
1500 pages...Congratulations...been there all the way and lov'n it! |
In the USO photo, the two individuals standing appear to be wearing some variant of an RAF enlisted man's uniform. Their caps, however, seem unusual, as does the (illegible) arm patch on the gent to the left.

This is a great snapshot showing the groundbreaking ceremony for Los Angeles City Hall. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/540/MiYrCX.jpg http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-1927...item280443fab6 The photograph shows the Pres. City Council, Boyle Workman, giving a speech. (I can't make out the word that appears below "Pres. City") Does anyone recognize the building in the background? (it's difficult because we don't know which direction the photo was taken) __ |

"Speaking" Different angle showing the buildings on the east side of Main St: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4...54205%2BPM.jpg ucla/lat And another showing Mayor George Cryer, the mob front, standing: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-E...43356%2BPM.jpg lapl I think, in the photo directly above, the stand is about where the Clocktower Courthouse used to be, with the southern-most building of the Temple block in the background or, maybe, farther south by a few buildings. LAPL has 8 or 10 pix taken that day (the buildings on the left, below, were on the west side of Spring St before realignment of Spring): https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-S...53427%2BPM.jpg lapl USCDL has some construction photos. The back of the northernmost building of the Temple Block is in the lower-right-hand corner of the image below. Angled Spring St, and all its buildings, except the International Bank Building/Bank of Italy, are gone: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-8...54254%2BPM.jpg uscdl |
Excellent post tovanger2 the Bisbee Inn building and the Higgins Building.
I tweaked the photo below in order to see that unique sign over the entrance a bit better. *originally posted by Flyingwedge http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...661/g07Wc9.png http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...673/tBI48E.png It looks like the Bisbee Inn sign was backlit stained glass. |
I recently came across this 1925 ad for the "Ambassador Poultry Show".

(I wonder if it was later incorporated into the hotel design to become one of it's ballrooms?) -that's only a guess mind you.:) __ |

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...stsidelkgS.jpg that open door? I went in it. http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...eorgeEside.jpg original double hung windows http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...eorgelobby.jpg The street lobby is the only thing I saw downstairs that had any charm. http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...e/IMG_1199.jpg I'd photographed the west side earlier in the morning on my way to infiltrate the Rosslyn. That corner of 3rd and Main is so altered it’s hard to reconcile that it’s the same place. http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...ht_ca1930s.jpg how you'd have seen it from Angel's Flight after the 3rd St. jog cut. photo originally from this site I'm sure. http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...ray%201905.jpg The Hotel Grey had to go for the 3rd St. jog removal. c.1905. usc. http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...erdinplace.jpg the alley was still nice & noirish. http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...e/IMG_1182.jpg the windows behind the building. :previous: Intriguing find t2, but I'm confused.
The ad clearly says it was located in Los Angeles. So what's with the Pomona address? _______ Here's 215 E. Center Street Pomona today. (was this Mr. Kennedy's address?) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...905/y0TtE0.jpg gsv Excellent photographs of the St. George NoirCityDame. Thanks for sharing them with us! :) __ |

Having just told you a few pages ago I didn't think my grandfather ever went to the USO when he was in town, I must say that sitting sailor does look a lot like him. I had to do a double take there at first. having grown a mustache to try to look older (but still 17), 1945: http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...obelle/001.jpg http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...%20cropped.jpg |
