The building on the left (443 South Los Angeles Street) was the Los Angeles Mission from 1949 until January 1992. There's a short history here. LAPL has this 1959 picture.

It looks like the windows were still full-size in the image above, but they have their current appearance in the undated picture below.

Isn't "COFFEE ROASTED" more likely? I had a quick look through a few of the CDs, but didn't find any coffee roasting businesses at that address, although it could easily have been advertising a business at another location.

Thanks for the Google Maps links, ProphetM. I have the classic version back for now :).

I agree "Coffee Roasted" makes more sense, but that sure looks Like a "D":

Thx for that great shot at the top of your post (above). There's even a glimpse of the Ponet on the left.

The two buildings to the north are from 1920, so the ghost sign is older than that.

Details from the Electric Railway Historical Association site:

The last regular car left Subway Terminal at 1:20 AM Sunday, December 28, 1952—car 5138. The last car ever was the 5146, that ran as the Pacific Electric-Chamber of Commerce Special inbound, leaving Van Nuys at 11:30 AM Monday, December 29, 1952. The line went dead officially at 3:00 PM that same afternoon when power was cut off. The 17 5100s used on the Valley run were placed in dead storage at West Hollywood immediately. All trackage was pulled up except for two blocks of the inbound track on Highland avenue from Santa Monica Boulevard to Lexington, kept for freight use, and the SP trackage in the vicinity of North Hollywood. The “dream” right-of-way through Cahuenga Pass was paved over in 1957 to add two additional lanes to the Hollywood Freeway.

Cheers,
Jack

Wig-Wag, here are a couple more slides from that last day of service.

Thanks for putting the different locals, that we've recently discussed, in perspective t2.
And you're right, FW's Excelsior Laundry post was great. I like that he also pointed out the Excelsior Barn on the 1906 Sanborn map.
(for Excelsior's fleet of horse drawn laundry wagons)

I thought I'd try to line up a before (1933) and after (2014) of the Excelsior Building.

Note the southern 3/4s of the Excelsior has been painted white in the shot above. Gone now like it never happened.

And I loved this one, so much to look at in the background plus the two little houses and the Ponet in the foreground (the POV is from the site of the Baltimore):

I'm guessing that this is the same Thomas J. Barkley in an article from the March 30, 1902 edition of the Los Angeles Herald.

I figured there were a good number of homes in the 1910 shot still standing - great to know those two in particular have survived. Wish the white house in the center with the tower could've made it. I was driving around taking photos in Lincoln Heights not long ago and snapped one of another survivor in the shot. I've circled it in red in this closeup:

It looks relatively unassuming from afar, but on closer inspection, you can see it has some very unusual details:

And the mid-century building across the street (Santa Monica Blvd.) was home to W.J. German Inc., Eastman Professional Motion Picture Films.

I've never heard of W.J. German Inc. Is anyone familiar with it?

p.s. the building is empty today

Left to right, The Athletic Model Guild compound, the Luther Green murder house, the Forget house, the 1922 replacement for the Dave's home and the 1896 Persons' residence:

Thanks to both you and GW for solving another mystery (and adding some noirish tidbits along the way). As for the Landmarks of Los Angeles book, that must have been where I first heard of the homes being moved from Olive, as I have owned that book for many years. And hey, Forget's house looks like it's finally getting some proper Victorian porch railings put back in! May we not Forget (pun intended) how the porch looked as recently as last year:

It was GW who provided the history, the noir and the Forget's original address on Olive which the people who live over on S Bonnie Brae found extremely entertaining.

The Forget had gotten into terrible shape as one can see here, but the person who bought it before a friend of my daughter's moved in has redone the floors and replaced the bathrooms and kitchens. There's no original detail inside anymore, but at least it's not scary. The new porch railing and some promised landscaping will help immensely. The porches really make that neighborhood.

Cheval or horse meat is banned for human consumption in the USA. A 2007 Time magazine article about horse meat brought in from Canada to the United States characterized the meat as sweet, rich, super-lean, oddly soft meat, and closer to beef than venison. That's a good description. I've eaten horse meat but I'd avoid it now. Its a misdemeanor to slaughter a horse in CA for human consumption.
