NEW YORK | Mario Cuomo (Tappan Zee) Bridge
Never got around to posting all of the images of the 3 proposals to replace the Tappan Zee Bridge (I will), but here's the winning replacement.
http://archpaper.com/news/articles.asp?id=6415 Return of the Giants New York kicks off one of the nation's largest public works projects: replacing the Tappan Zee Bridge. http://archpaper.com/uploads/image/tapanzee_03.jpg December 19 2012 Aaron Seward Quote:

Its a beautiful bridge, but its completely asinine that they are not engineering a railway (or future capability) into this design - especially with it coming in so far under the original cost estimates. This will be regarded as extremely sort sighted in the not so far future.

what a disappointing bridge design, option 2 was more aesthetically pleasing IMO

Well thats good to know. I guess I was assuming the rail infrastructure would have been on a middle deck, not carried directionally separate on the auto spans.

I like the proposal chosen, but rail should have been integrated in the design.
The winning design also looks a lot like the cable stayed Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa Bay, Florida: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...FortDeSoto.jpg Coincidentally, the old and now demolished bridge also looked like the current Tappan Zee Bridge: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...y_Bridge_3.JPG |

Building it further south would have also placed it too close to the GW Bridge, property of the PA NY/NJ.

will the new bridge be called 'the tappan zee bridge'?
I hope so - always one of my favorite bridge names |
I developed my life long fear of crossing bridges from the Tappan Zee - and that was thirty years ago when it was probably in far better shape! :uhh:

Meanwhile, the new Kosciuszko Bridge (Brooklyn/Queens) will get underway also...

I like the design of the second proposal a lot more. It's understandable as to why they chose the other design instead though....
|
It's good that New York City is getting all these new bridges, they're much needed. Not to mention the $500 million renovation of the Brooklyn Bridge. Gov. Cuomo and Mayor Bloomberg know how to get things done!
|
Shouldn't this thread be in the Transportation forum?

If I remember correctly the Kosciuszko has four lanes northbound, three lanes southbound. The wiki says the bridge is mounted somewhere by two eagles, one polish, one American. I've crossed it a million times and never noticed, nor can I find a picture of them. Anyhow, I hope the new bridge is just as high off the ground because the view of Midtown from the crest is excellent. |

Its a good looking bridge. My only complains being that there is no incorporated rail infrastructure from the beginning and that the support piers outside of the main span have a "stock highway engineer" look to them instead of carrying the outward "V" shape theme of the central suspension span. This would have made for a much more handsome appearance.

They need rail on it from Day 1. If there's no money for rail right now, then they should just hold off on building the bridge until there's money.
Rail is a huge priority, and shouldn't be delayed until the future. The West-of-Hudson commuting population desperately needs another rail crossing over the river. |
A new bridge has been necessary for 10 years, postponing it to wait for the perfect scenario in which rail would be included would be foolish and be a waste of hundreds of millions of dollars. You can't let perfect stand in the way of good.

Speaking of similar bridges:
Verrazano: http://i.imgur.com/Y9afggN.jpg Throgs Neck: http://i.imgur.com/XplCtIH.jpg Bronx Whitestone: http://i.imgur.com/AUZ9dAw.jpg |
People can crow about the generic designs all they want, but the truth is the bridges add far more value as infrastructure than any architectural elements could ever add. New bridges in these spots are LONG overdue. The current ones outgrew their intended capacity ages ago.

I like the KO and the Goethals proposal. Not really a fan of the Tappan Zee proposal.

The single tower cable-stayed bridge that'll replace the old City Island Bridge

The bridge to Staten Island should include an HBLR extension. The whole "options for mass transit in the future" is a bunch of bull. It might not even be feasible to retrofit it with rail in the future. Same goes for the other bridge.
|
The KO bridge proposal looks better in my mind because it comes together in the middle. It's a nice effect.

Forgot about that one. So many bridges in the area, but we're in an era of building again. |
There is a clear difference when it builds bridges in the United States and in Europe. In Europé they build in 9 out of 10 times collective traffic traces of any kind. I think it's time that America takes after and build into even public transport tracks under the bridge as it is done in most of those bridges in Europe. Sure, it costs a lot but in the long run it is money well invested.

The thing is, these old truss bridges are very maintenance intensive. Although the trusses have very efficient use of material, they have so much surface area that requires painting and are vulnerable to rust. Not to mention the current trend in civil engineering (spurred by the I65W collapse) to remove truss bridges that don't have redundant load paths.

That's going to be one hell of a trip! Do they plan to sail through the Panama Canal, or is it going to be dismantled and hauled cross-country?
