Construction Kicks-Off For Pendry Hotel at 4 Manhattan West, Hudson Yards


Construction has kicked-off on Pendry Hotels’ premier New York City location, at 4 Manhattan West. The 21-story hotel is officially named Pendry Manhattan West, and will offer 164 guest rooms and a selection of condominiums positioned on the tower’s upper levels.

The selection of Pendry Hotels by Brookfield Properties represents the first joint development venture between the two companies, which is expected to debut in 2021

Looks so tiny among the giants, but the design is a nice contrast from the sharp angles of the other towers.

Looks really nice but should have been 41 stories or so instead....the Eugene is not so much bad, but compared with the other towers(including neighboring Hudson Yards) so, so meh.

Its very underwhelming. Not because of its design, but by how many units (hospitality) that it has. Given the area, it seems like they limited themselves on hotel units. This would of been a good spot for 400-500 beds. I think much more feasible long term versus condos.

SOM’s Pendry Manhattan West Hotel Tops Out In Hudson Yards


The Pendry Manhattan West Hotel has topped out at 21 stories above the expansive new Manhattan West complex adjacent to Hudson Yards. Designed by Skidmore Owings & Merrill, the building features a distinctive fluted glass façade on its northern and southern elevations, an interesting departure from the boxy and angular style of the megaliths that permeate this area of Manhattan. The development, whose official address is 4 Manhattan West, will offer 164 guest rooms and a selection of condominiums on the upper floors.

“The Pendry will perfectly complement the other amenities and offerings in the neighborhood,” said Marc DePaul, vice president of operations at Pavarini McGovern, the primary construction manager for 4 Manhattan West. “We’re very excited and proud to mark this milestone for the project and for Manhattan West.”

Under the direction of Brookfield Properties, Manhattan West arrives as part of the New York City Council initiative to reinvigorate the derelict Hudson Yards section of Manhattan. The overall complex spans over 7 million square feet spread across eight acres of land. Its boundaries stretch from Ninth Avenue to Tenth Avenue and from 31st Street to 33rd Street.

In addition to Pendry, Manhattan West comprises nearly six million square feet of office space within three primarily commercial towers known as One, Two, and Five Manhattan West, in addition to The Lofts at Three Manhattan West.

The 62-story rental component of the complex, known as The Eugene, includes 844 units and 50,000 square feet of amenity spaces. Located at 6 Manhattan West, this structure is also designed by SOM.

A two-acre landscaped public plaza sits at the center of the development with retail and dining components at both the northern and southern boundaries at the ground level.

What is the set back requirement. It looks terrible in person because of this.

NY DOB sky-plane codes requiring the mass of the building to taper away from the streetwall as is gains height, so most new developments of any height or FAR are required to pull away from the streetwall to accomodate the requirement even if that makes for bad urban design or is aesthetically detrimental. Many architects and the developers that pay them meet this requirement in the most economically beneficial way by having only a very short (and almost always awkward) base that meets the property line while maximizing allowable square footage by building a shaft set back from the streetwall straight up so floorplates remain the same and floors are increased. This may make moderately taller structures on the side streets but destroys a very basic urban design tenet in the process, and in my opinion is a betrayal of the basic stewardship in guiding the building of the public realm the city is entrusted with.

For the unintended consequences see this tower or virtually all new budget hotel towers in the West 30s as well as throughout the city.

A particularly horrific example.
