Maple Street Biscuit Co. is buttering up San Antonio with two locations. The Florida-founded chain of breakfast and lunch comfort food is prepping restaurants at the Quarry Village and in the Alamo Ranch area.

The biscuit business, founded in 2012 in Jacksonville by Scott Moore and Guy Evans, is now based in Tennessee. Maple Street is now owned by Cracker Barrel after a 2019 acquisition worth $36 million, according to the parent company's website. The chain dots southern states with locations in Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee.

More than 20 San Antonio restaurants are putting a new spin on Thin Mint therapy.

As part of its annual Cookie Flavor Fest, Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas is partnering with Aldaco’s, Clementine, Rosario’s and other local eateries to offer new twists on the organization's beloved fundraising treats.

Each of the 21 participating restaurants — breweries and wineries are also included — is showcasing a special Girl Scout Cookie-inspired bite, drink or pairing. Proceeds from the items will help Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas support its mission of building “girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place.”

Among this year's dessert creations is Mi Tierra’s Cít-rico Cookie Cheesecake, a citrus cheesecake with a Lemon-Ups shortbread crust, orange gelatin and lime whipped cream.

Those who'd rather drink their sweets may want to tip back Weathered Souls’ new imperial stout, made with Adventurefuls, this year’s signature Girl Scout Cookie. The brew features notes of brownie batter, caramel and sea salt.

Chicken-and-waffle chain Chick’nCone to open San Antonio store near Monte Vista

San Antonio chicken-and-waffle aficionados will soon have a new spot to frequent — this one with a twist on the comfort food classic.

Pennsylvania-based chain Chick'nCone plans to bring its proprietary fried chicken-filled waffle cones — yep, the kind used at ice cream parlors — to the Alamo City's Monte Vista neighborhood later this spring.

A Chick'nCone restaurant will go into retail space at 223 E. Hildebrand Ave., near Bexar Kolache Company and Volare Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria, according to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. The filing estimates an April completion date for the store.

Chick’nCone’s main draw is its selection of crispy, hand-rolled waffle cones filled with fried chicken tenders — a handheld meal the company calls “Instagrammable.” The tenders can be tossed in the chain’s six sauces, including ranch, maple-cinnamon barbecue and spicy South American peri peri.

The chain's sides include fries, macaroni and Cajun-spiced corn in a cup, and it also whips up milkshakes. Some franchise spots offer adult beverages including frozen mimosas and beer, but it’s unclear whether the Monte Vista location is one of those.

The forthcoming San Antonio location appears to be part of a “rapid” expansion touted on Chick'nCone's website. The chain is adding brick-and-mortar and mobile locations in New York, Colorado, Texas, Kentucky and Dubai.

There’s no challenging San Antonio’s position as Tacotown, U.S.A. (don’t even, Austin.) But as Texas is increasingly populated by Californians, a newcomer has stepped into the arena that is our tortilla-wrapped culture: The California burrito.

At least three restaurants specializing in these big-as-a-baby burritos filled with french fries (french fries!) among other ingredients have opened in the city in the past year. And while San Antonians may not know how to feel about that, the California ex-pats who’ve made a home here are relishing every bite.

Seems to me Rolando's Super Taco has been making these for some time, although without the fries. Usually typical taco fillings in these, and their Picadillo is the bomb.

San Antonio bar and restaurant Hello Paradise closing after little more than a year in business

Pearl-area drinking establishment Hello Paradise is shutting its doors after a little more than a year in business. However, the Thai- and tiki-inspired spot plans to stay open for one last weekend bash.

A Wednesday post on Hello Paradise's Instagram page revealed that it will be permanently shuttered after a final day of service, Sunday, Feb. 13.

Kura Sushi, San Antonio’s first and only conveyor-belt sushi bar, will begin serving next week

Kura Sushi, San Antonio’s first taste of Japanese automated sushi dining, is finally opening its doors, bringing nigiri, rolls, hand rolls, gunkan maki, ramen and desserts to the Alamo Quarry Market starting Wednesday, Feb. 16.

Kura's claim to fame is that its fresh, handmade sushi is carried along on a revolving conveyor belt, allowing diners to pluck their choices from the automated system. While the process is a novelty in Texas, it's a staple of modern Japanese food culture.



To prepare SA sushi lovers for the opening, the eatery is offering a $5-off coupon to those who sign up for its email newsletter.

The restaurant, located at 255 E. Basse Road, Suite 384, will be open noon-9 p.m. on Feb. 16-18. Starting Saturday, Feb. 19, it will open Sunday through Thursday 11:30 a.m.-9:30 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 11:30 a.m.-10 p.m.

The food and beverage options in San Antonio’s Government Hill neighborhood near the Pearl continue to grow with a new bar coming to the area.

Jeremy and Roxanne Rushing have purchased the building at 1606 N. Pine St. and plan to transform the roughly 1,200-square-foot space into a casual bar dubbed Manguera SA. The building will require extensive renovations, and Jeremy Rushing said he and his wife don’t anticipate opening Manguera SA before 2024.

The Wrigleyville Grill, located in the Park North shopping center by San Pedro and Loop 410, is about as close as it gets to eating in the Windy City without a plane ticket. Open since 2013, it was featured in a 2018 episode of the popular Food Network show “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” the frosted locks of Guy Fieri in a photo on the wall as proof.

Manguera just means hose. Wouldn't stop me from patronizing. Perhaps the owners have a reason, and you should ask them first.

All-you-can-eat sushi chain Trapper’s coming to San Antonio this summer

Washington State-based chain Trapper’s will bring its all-you-can-eat sushi model to San Antonio in August, adding another spot to the city’s recent sushi boom.

The chain will occupy a 3,900-square-foot space at 415 Loop 1604, on the city’s far West Side, Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation records show. Construction on the space is set to begin March 1, according to the filing.

The San Antonio location will be the chain’s first foray into the Lone Star State. Trapper’s currently operates locations in Washington and Arizona, slinging nigiri, tempura, teriyaki, hand rolls and mochi.

According to the chain’s website, founder Trapper O’Keeffe began preparing sushi in 1993, training under his brother-in-law Eisuke Sato in Reno, Nevada. After Eisuke closed his restaurant and moved back to Japan, Trapper took what he learned to Washington state.

In 2004, O’Keeffe opened Sushi Town in Bonney Lake, Washington, about 40 minutes south of Seattle. Multiple locations of Trapper’s Sushi quickly followed.

Trapper's will be the latest addition to SA's growing sushi scene, which includes Toro’ko Sushi and Izumi Sushi & Hibachi — both of which opened in 2021 — and new Japanese transplant Kura Sushi, which began serving this week.

NEW BRAUNFELS — Ron Snider, the businessman who brought Krause’s Café back to life, knew he had a terminal case of pulmonary fibrosis about five years before he died in April, said his son Chris Snider, who now operates the restaurant.

For most of that time, though, he shared his diagnosis only with family and close friends while defying his doctor by keeping a busy schedule overseeing construction of Krause’s biergarten and pavilion.

“He was definitely a proud person, and he didn’t want sympathy. But it gave us a time to connect,” Chris said. “I got the opportunity to work with him, to understand his vision and get my hands around what it takes to operate what we affectionately refer to as a three-ring circus.”

Fat Tuesday is back in San Antonio with two locations

Just in time for Mardi Gras. San Antonio can soon welcome its second Fat Tuesday location at the end of this month.

Fat Tuesday, the daiquiri spot that traces all the way back to New Orleans' Bourbon Street, will hold a grand opening on February 26 at 7531 Bandera Road, Suite 101 at 11 a.m. Guests can get Fat Tuesday's signature yardstick drinks.

Fat Tuesday offers the signature yardstick drinks as well as less-daunting sizes of its daiquiri flavors, including the famous 190 Octane. There are more than 70 Fat Tuesday locations, including outposts in Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Honduras, according to the website.

The post on Facebook asks guests to grab their Mardi Gras gear and come out for the frozen cocktails. This is the second of a "few" expected to open in San Antonio, a spokeswoman for the company told MySA in July.

The San Antonio River Center location at 849 E Commerce Street, Space #125, quietly opened its doors this January. Previously, the downtown area was home to a Fat Tuesday location in the past near the Hard Rock Cafe on W Crockett Street in the early 2000s.

Goodbye Thai food and tiki drinks. Hello burgers, hot dogs and sausages. The team behind Bandit BBQ has just signed on to take over the former Hello Paradise space on East Grayson Street near the Pearl with a concept dubbed Big Animal.

Partner and head chef Mark Garcia said his teams aims to provide high-quality food at an accessible price point and hope to open in April.

“We’re going to be serving well thought out burgers. Think of it as muscle-car driving food with house-made sausages and hot dogs,” Garcia said. “We’re trying to hit the crowd that wants good food and drinks but doesn’t necessarily want to pay Pearl prices.”

This is a place of very desolate pine forests exactly like Big Bend of Texas except at the very northern end of the country..very sparsely populated. Deserted.
A Fudge sucker is a tourist from Michigan's lower peninsula many of whom stop at the numerous fudge shops located along the highways of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. There are many distinct cultural differences between these Michigan residents especially so, as many of the Yoopers speak Canadian English.
