The Texas Medical Center has big plans in mind for some of the last unused real estate in the TMC district.

At last year's inaugural State of the TMC luncheon, Dr. Robert Robbins, CEO of the TMC, unveiled a grand vision of a new research campus dubbed TMC3. While dirt hasn't begun to move yet, he expects it to happen soon.

"This is going to put us on the map in Houston to compete with London, Shanghai, Boston, San Francisco and Singapore," Robbins said at the annual State of the Texas Medical Center event. "I am more confident standing here a year later that this is going to happen."

The Texas Medical Center plans to move forward with the convention center, hotel, retail and living space, Robbins told the HBJ. It plans to put out request for proposals in the coming months to get those projects started.

Robbins added that he already has the developers willing to front the initial costs for these projects, but did not elaborate on which ones specifically. He also said the Texas Medical Center will launch a philanthropic campaign to help fund the project.

Beautiful campus. Would love to work here. That, and the Exxon mobile campus. Seems like Med Center always has cranes sprouting from it. Millions of square feet must be added per year I'd imagine which is great for securing its future as the worlds largest.

Interesting proposal and if built will be an excellent addition to the Medical Center.

The Medical Center has been a positive in the midst of strengthening downturns in both the commercial and residential markets in Houston due to the crash in oil prices.

In the article McKeon is quoted as saying:

“It’s been unanimously approved by our board and it’s moving very quickly,” McKeon, executive vice president, chief strategy officer and chief operating officer of the Texas Medical Center, said at an investor conference hosted by Midway, at Hotel Sorella in CityCentre.

But at the end of the article is this statement:

* Note: In a follow-up interview, McKeon said the only thing approved by the Medical Center board so far has been a change in real estate covenants that would allow for-profit companies to help develop the project.

Maybe McKeon is just so excited about the prospects he announced everything being unanimously approved in the expectation that it would be but then was forced to say that nothing has been approved other than a change in covenants that could allow it to go forward, not that it is actually approved to go forward.

A bit different message.

Texas Medical Center to develop hotel at TMC3, rest of campus still in progress

The 30-acre campus is expected to include roughly a 1.5 million-square-foot shared research space among the founding institutions: TMC, Baylor College of Medicine, Texas A&M University Health Science Center, the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. It's a first time these institutions will have built and shared a space of this scale in the TMC.

TMC3's centerpiece, resembling the double helix shape of a DNA strand, will be a multi-story building across most of the 30-acre area. The structure is expected to feature core laboratories, restaurants, retail and commercial space. TMC reversed its land covenants, historically designating its property as a nonprofit sphere, to become a for-profit area similar to its innovation institute. The labs are expected to be dedicated to genomics, imaging, drug screening along with conference and educational space.

Another visible part of the campus expected to be built is the 60-foot-tall elevated park, which will be open to the public. The 18-acre park is planned to have gardens, walking and running trails and views of downtown Houston. Landscape architect James Corner, who designed the High Line in New York, will be designing the park.

Finally, the new campus will feature a 19-story TMC Hotel and Conference Center. The hotel is expected to have 410 rooms, and the conference center is planned to encompass 50,000 square feet. A flag has not been selected for the hotel, McKeon said.

It also looks like they added 2 or 3 more buildings? One recent RFP mentioned a Medical School. A medical school was not in the original scope right? I wonder if it will be Baylor or UTHealth.

What's up with the two (parking garages?) across the street labeled "W W". That's on the UTHealth Research Park Complex property. Maybe that's the parking for the MD Anderson & UTHealth Research Building?
