California comfort food spot Black Bear Diner plans Texas expansion, including San Antonio location

https://www.sacurrent.com/sanantonio...t?oid=27986287

It’s not just California residents that are flocking to Texas. A new comfort food spot based in the Sunshine State is also headed our way.

Redding, California-based Black Bear Diner will open its first Alamo City location this summer at 2707 SE Military Dr., serving up its “home-style comfort food classics” for breakfast, lunch and dinner, news site MySA reports.

The San Antonio location, which formerly housed short-lived Market Barbecue, is one of six corporate-owned locations planned for the Lone State State. Other future Texas locations include McAllen, Mesquite, Fort Worth and the Austin area, MySA reports.

The diner is known for its stick-to-your-ribs fare such as chicken fried steak benedict, homemade meatloaf and slow-cooked pot roast.

Southside ice house project gets go-ahead from historic review board

https://sanantonioreport.org/southsi...-review-board/

The owners of a 1-acre site in the Mission Historic District can move ahead with plans to develop a neighborhood gathering spot after a review panel recently approved modifications to the property.

The project, at 207 Roosevelt Ave., will transform a site now zoned for industrial use near the trails of the Mission Reach into an open-air entertainment center. Design plans show one building labeled “ice house.”

“It’s a fabulous location,” said architect Jerry Lammers, principal with Alamo Architects, who represented owner Joe Bakke before the Historic and Design Review Commission hearing.

“There’s really nothing like this down in that area of town,” he said. “The goal for the project is really for it to be a neighborhood project.”

Plans show an open lawn area with picnic tables surrounded by existing buildings on the site that will be renovated, with two additional commercial buildings to be constructed.

Does anybody know what's going to be built on the corner of McCullough and 410 where TGIF used to be?

I remember a while back, an In-N-Out was supposed to go there. If that's the case, that intersection is going to be hell during lunch hours especially with Chick-Fil-A hogging up that entire road, lol.

Owners of San Antonio watering holes partner with Current for inaugural Ice House Week

https://www.sacurrent.com/sanantonio...t?oid=28136863

Popular drinking spots the Friendly Spot and Dakota Eastside Icehouse have joined forces with the Current to launch San Antonio Icehouse Week, a 10-day celebration of some of the city’s most vibrant indoor-outdoor bars and restaurants.

From Feb. 25 to March 6, roughly 30 participating icehouses will offer specialty pricing, prizes and giveaways. A portion of proceeds will benefit LiftFund, a San Antonio nonprofit that offers loans, grants and resources to local startups and small businesses.

Alamo City entrepreneurs Jody Newman — of Bruno’s Dive Bar and the Friendly Spot — and Dakota Eastside Icehouse’s Kent Oliver dreamed up Icehouse Week as a way to support local, independent small businesses in the wake of the pandemic — all while celebrating the icehouse's vital place in South Texas culture.

Drinking spots taking part in the inaugural Icehouse Week include Big Hops, Brooster’s Backyard, Burleson Beer Yard, Lucy Cooper’s Texas Icehouse, Social Spot and Windmill Icehouse, among others. A full list is available online.

Lulu’s famously huge cinnamon rolls are coming back

https://www.expressnews.com/food/res...s-16829894.php

San Antonio’s most famous gut-busting confection is set to make a triumphant return this month: Lulu’s big-as-your-head cinnamon rolls.

When Lulu’s Bakery & Cafe closed early in the pandemic, the restaurant’s iconic 3 ½-pound cinnamon roll became one of the city’s most famous culinary casualties. While Lulu’s isn’t coming back, its ginormous sweet treat will be revived at both Green Vegetarian Cuisine locations beginning on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14.

Green Vegetarian Cuisine owner Mike Behrend is the son of Lulu’s founder Lulu Singleton and said in a news release he’ll be baking the massive rolls using his mother’s original recipe, which dates back to 1992.
