Look at all those phone booths!

We used to shop at a Country Cousins in Costa Mesa (approx 40 minutes south of LA) It might have been a second location, i think it was built in the 60's

Water Pipeline of America

Maybe this isn't the proper forum, but about half of the city's water is out of the Colorado River, via Lake Havasu and the Colorado River Aqueduct.....as you know the Colorado is essentially drying out, clearly something must be done....I find this idea intriquing.

This appears to be feasible: an 868 mile concrete pipeline (2 tubes) from the Mississippi at Davenport IA. to the headwaters of the Colorado River at Rocky Mountain National Park.....the water is then dumped into the Colorado, eventually gets to Lake Mead/Lake Powell/Lake Havasu and re-fills these resevoirs....yes, the water needs to be pumped uphill when the pipeline gets to the Rockies, this is accomplished via Centrifugal Pumps, an ancient and proven technology (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centrifugal_pump)....the pumps will be powered by vertical wind turbines installed every 2 miles.

The comparison is the Alaska oil pipeline, which runs 800 miles, and was constructed in 3 years....with 1970's technology!....if the thing ever leaks it's just water, so no environmental impact.

The Mississippi periodically floods at Davenport....so reducing the flow is actually a benefit for IA.

This pipeline only traverses 2 states, IA. and NE., I can't see much political opposition in those states....

If I was the Biden administration I would be all over this, hell, I would get Elon Musk to assemble the team, he's a can-do kind of guy....estimated cost $120 Billion, that is relatively cheap given the benefit....massive job creation as well, during construction and even after construction for maintenance, management etc.

The whole plan is here....

I believe CSUN has got it wrong. If you compare the Google street view at the same camera angle, this photo is the Glenoaks Blvd. location. Mountains in the background are a dead giveaway. I would have liked to post the Google view, but I'm not sure how to do so. BTW, I worked about a half mile down Polk St. from here for 19 years.

Does anyone know if this stone cabin has survived?

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/CSfBBr.jpg
Published in the July 27, 1950 edition of the Valley Times.

When the photograph was taken in July 1950 it appears to be located in a residential area. ...(but the descriptions below beg to differ )

I found two different descriptions:

"Stone cabin is possibly one of the oldest dwellings at Amestoy Ranch which is located at Los Encinos State Historic Park in Encino, CA".

and. . .

"Cabin built of native stone which gives evidence of being oldest structure in State Historical Monument in Encino, and which is possibly 150 years old."

That's 150 years old in 1950!

I'm looking for my link(s) again.

If we're talking mega-projects, the one to channel water from the Missouri River to the Ogallala aquifer has been seriously considered. (No need to cross the Rockies.) A more Noirish mega project is the one to save the Salton Sea.

The building next door (above 740 on the aerial) is numbered 734 & 736, so maybe the second house moved by Mr Wiley in 1913 (originally 712 Hartford, it became 738 Hartford) was placed behind 740. That might explain the number of residents that oldstuff found. Perhaps someone with access to the Sanborn maps can check it out.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...0Hartford3.jpg
mil.library.ucsb.edu/Google Maps

I think that the sweet potato photo was taken between the two buildings, looking toward the lower right corner of the aerial view, and past the house below 740 on the aerial. You'll remember that the house below was missing from the 2009 GSV image I posted. I think it was 742 & 744 Hartford Avenue, which got its demo permit in 1980.

While trying to find info on the building behind 740, I found that it was still there in 1972, but gone by 1980 (according to Historic Aerials). The only building permit in that date range was an alteration/repair permit from October 30, 1979, but it held the answer. There was obviously a fire at 740 which necessitated a repair to a portion of the front building and the demolition of the middle and rear portions. They even included a handy plan. Notice that the fire damage to the front portion was to the roof and 2nd story at the back right. I'm guess that the fire may have damaged the house next door, which was further back from the road. Maybe its demo a year later was connected. Now I look at these plans again, I think that the sweet pototo photo was taken on the steps at the lower-right corner of the rear portion.

If you look closely at the photograph of the man carrying the mutant sweet potatoes

The photographs (there are two) inside the folder are of a nice looking, well dressed, woman.

There is a date stamped on the back of the folder but it's rather difficult to read.

It looks like the year is 1935 but the woman's appearance suggests (to me) 1945.

As far as I can see from the building permits, 740 Hartford was moved from 1242 W 7th Street in mid 1913, and 712 Hartford was moved to 738 Hartford at the same time. The owner of both was H C Wiley of 1246 W 7th Street. I found a Hency C Wiley at 1242 W 7th in the 1909 CD, and there's a Mrs H C Wiley there in 1913. The 1912 CD lists her as Nellie Wiley, widow of H C Wiley.

The apartments initially seem to have been called the Heath, but the Roselle name is in the CDs by 1918. The CDs of the 60s call it Hartford House.

In the second picture above, you can see that the lot to the right was empty. The old house to the right of that was already boarded up in 2009, but was not demolished until 2014. A modern apartment building now stands on those two lots.

Regarding 740 Hartford Avenue, it looks like my optimism of four years ago was misplaced. Here's the January 2022 Google Streetview of Hartford Avenue showing 740 and its two neighbors boarded up and in a bad state of repair. The Googlemobile went along 7th Street as recently as June 2022, and as far as I can tell from there, the buildings are now gone.

The posting about Gay Way at 514 S. Main led me on my usual Odyssey looking into that address, which proved quite interesting in little ways. It's pleasant to get acquainted with the characters and population of the town, and their doings:

Leaving aside the address's successive service as a fish store, furniture store, market, hardware store, curio shop, hall for the Independent Order of Foresters, and various incidences of crime, not to mention that it accommodated boarders upstairs, a few interesting items remain. We start for a moment on Wall St.:

https://i.postimg.cc/5tf2mBsn/514-SM...1904-10-21.jpg
LA Times, 10/21/1904

The abovementioned Mrs. Coe lacked nothing in spirit, and the papers over a decade had a light sprinkling of her tussles, her high point perhaps being an emotion-filled appearance in court in which she called her opponent a monster. The judge had to rein her in. Her opponent the monster prevailed in the case.

Focusing more closely on our Main St. address, we draw in a familiar Angeleno family now, as well as another name already known to NLA:

https://i.postimg.cc/QVLXK1Bg/514-SM...1921-10-16.jpg
LA Times, 10/16/1921

Mrs. Ducommun was the widow of Charles Ducommun, whose hardware store founded in 1849 is familiar to students of old L.A., and that business still exists, now serving the world of technology, as the oldest continuously-operating firm in California. Mrs. D. would die November 28, 1926, at the age of 83. Meantime, search of NLA will find mention of Mr. Toplitzky, a very active dealer in real estate.

By 1930, the site was on the way to its Gay Way persona, and fits all the criteria for Noirish Los Angeles:

https://i.postimg.cc/y8yZBY5p/514-SM...-1930-1-19.jpg
LA Times, 1/19/1930

We've neglected the adventures of the upstairs boarders, and so will end with this outspoken fellow in the depths of the Great Depression:

https://i.postimg.cc/VLjSBkYs/514-SM...-1933-2-24.jpg
LA Times, 2/24/1933

Food and shelter? Such frivolous desires.

Mystery house-garden from 1914

Hi,

I'm trying to figure out where these 1914 movie scenes were filmed. The location appears to be a large house with a garden featuring urns (a particularly large urn, almost human-sized, can be seen in photo 1 at the far left).

This house has a room that overlooks the garden and stairs that descend to it (second picture below).

Any ideas? I've been looking at pix of houses that were around then but haven't come across anything definitive.

Thank you!

Police break up an attempted march on City Hall by the unemployed, Jan. 1930.....the demonstration was inspired by the International Communist Party, hence the papers dubbed the protest "Red Riots"

Where have all the hats and caps gone? It is said when JFK rarely wore a hat, that was when the decline started. But my recall is that by the 1950s, fewer men wore them except when going to work, when hats were expected on office workers arriving as much as ties. Hats on women also began to decline about the same time. The helmet like cloche hat worn by the woman in the foreground was on the way out as 1929 ended, replaced mostly by smaller beret-like hats. By the late 1930s and 1940s, larger and more flamboyant hats made a return on women, some oddly shaped like upside down shoes, etc. and often sporting flowers and fruit, perhaps inspired by popular Brazilian star of the time Carmen Miranda. The type of cap worn by some of the men in the photo also declined and were rarely seen by the 1940s. Baseball type caps began to gain in street wear in the 1940s and 1950s among kids and working men. Baseball caps were often worn by military men in WW2 at work in the hot South Pacific or southern Europe or North Africa outside of battle. The bill kept the sun out of the eyes, and the rim caught the sweat.

I don't have an answer to that, but I was looking at the youtube link. I'm not sure I've ever heard of The Oz Film Company. Nor that L. Frank Baum wrote and directed any film versions of his stories! At least this noted one, His Majesty the Scarecrow of Oz (1914).

A little searching finds a few interesting things. This link, HERE, has some info about this company:

Oz Film Company: Founded in 1914, this company, also known as The Oz Film Manufacturing Company, produced silent films based off L. Frank Baum's books, most notably the Oz series. Every single one of them bombed commercially. The movies they made had various colors and custom themes playing over it, like silent films traditionally do.

In 1915, this company would be absorbed into Metro Pictures (now Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer). Only four of their films are known to survive: The Patchwork Girl of Oz, His Majesty the Scarecrow of Oz, The Magic Cloak of Oz and The Last Egyptian, the last of which is only partially found.

The Wikipedia page, HERE, has further information, including:

The studio was located on Santa Monica Boulevard between Gower Street and Lodi Street. The facility would later be used by Famous Players-Lasky (now called Paramount Pictures) and National Film Corporation of America. It was considered state-of-the-art at the time. It was used almost exclusively for interior shots. Exterior shots were done outdoors rather than simulated in the studio. In some scenes, it is evident that some 'interior' scenes were also filmed outdoors.

In the "Decline" section it's noted: The studio was rented out to others, and was eventually demolished.

In the "Stock Company" section there's a discrepancy. It says, J. Farrell MacDonald directed all of the film productions and acted in some of them. L. Frank Baum wrote all the scripts, however, in the youtube link to the film in question this one has the credit: Written and Directed by L. Frank Baum.

At this link, HERE, some Moving Picture World advertisements, show the address of The Oz Film Manufacturing Company written as: Studio and Laboratories, Santa Monica Blvd., Gower to Lodi Sts., Los Angeles, Cal.

Also, welcome to NLA, Ossrae.

The caption accompanying this photo talks about renaming Pearl St. and Bellevue Terrace to Figueroa and Sixth. I think these houses are beside the ones in your photo.(Sorry, no pics. I'm writing this on a phone.)

Thanks for your help, Mackerm ...I appreciate it. :)

MYSTERY BUILDINGS

Anyone recognize these buildings? The first is of a house I am certain we've seen before on NLA, I think I even posted it...some muckety-muck built it out, I think, in Culver City. Just can't remember the m-m's name or the context.

The huge white Colonial building--seems too big to be a residence--I'm thinking may also be in Culver City. Of course I thought of the similar Ince/Selznick studios building, but it's not that....

I checked to see if the homes shown in the photo were still there.

I think they're gone. (yes, I checked both sides of the street)

On the north side of the street there is this cheaply built piece of shit apartment building.

It looks better by 2018. Go HERE

There are homes on the south side of the street but they don't appear to be the houses shown in the 1916 photograph. Go Here

Now let's travel out to Van Nuys.

That's Francine Dancer in front of the Spotlight Club. I worked in Hollywood in the late 90s and she was always wandering around dancing in and out of her wheelchair. Here's an episode of her public access show.

The first appears to be the Ferdinand Bain Mansion, now part of the Notre Dame Academy on Overland Avenue.

GW, is this the same Ferdinand Randall Bain that you wrote about in your blog post on 3101 Wilshire Boulevard?
