Well I saw the ugly building next to it, and I just thought that was gonna be it. I thought the blue shroud was glass lol. It looked like it was getting built.

Kind of off-topic, but is there a rendering for the new Fitterman Hall?

Deutsche Bank Demolition On Track for Year-End Conclusion

Quote:

Demolition crews are less than four months away from finishing the years-long and accident-plagued takedown of the former Deutsche Bank tower at 130 Liberty Street, according to the building’s owners.

A spokesman for the Lower Manhattan Development Corp., which purchased the building after it was battered in the collapse of the World Trade Center, said the once-toxic building was on schedule to be completely demolished by year’s end. Less than a quarter of the tower’s original 40 stories remain, as crews continue to dismantle the building piece-by-piece.

“Currently the building is being worked on at floors seven and six,” LMDC spokesman John DiLibero told members of Community Board 1’s World Trade Center Redevelopment Committee earlier this month. “Our goal is to get the building down by the end of the calendar year.”

When the building is down, the LMDC will turn over the land—just south of the World Trade Center site—to the Port Authority, which plans to use it as a staging area for construction of its underground Vehicle Security Center.

Deutsche Bank Crane Blocks Entrance to New Hotel
The World Center Hotel is offering guests free drinks to make up for the inconvenience caused by the crane.

The latest challenge to beset the owners of the World Center Hotel arrived early Monday morning: a large yellow crane.

The crane was set up directly in front of the hotel’s entrance on Washington Street, and it will remain there for at least the next three months, to help demolish the adjacent Deutsche Bank building.

While the crane is operating, from dawn until dusk, cars aren’t allowed to pull up to the hotel’s entrance, but rather have to drop guests down the block, at the corner of Washington and Albany Streets. Bellhops wait there to escort guests beneath a protected sidewalk shed and into the hotel.

"We’re offering free drinks to our guests to make up for the noise and inconvenience," said Jon Horowitz, a vice president with the hotel. "We’re prepared for every contingency."

Still, Horowitz said he was frustrated that the Lower Manhattan Development Corp., which owns the Deutsche Bank building, "has not kept us informed or up-to-date about what’s going on."

A spokesman for the LMDC said the crane was necessary to remove steel from the lower floors of the building. After many delays and a 2007 blaze that killed two firefighters, the former skyscraper is scheduled to finally be demolished by the end of this year.

The World Center Hotel, which opened in June across the street from the Deutsche Bank building, has already faced a slew of challenges. Mid-way through construction, the hotel had to move its entrance from Cedar Street to Washington Street to make way for work at the World Trade Center site.

Several tourists who were staying at the hotel on Tuesday said they had trouble finding it because the street was blocked off, and it didn’t occur to them that they would be staying behind orange construction barriers.

Manoel Oliveira, 40, who is visiting from Brazil, said he wandered around several adjacent blocks before finally seeing the hotel’s signs.

"I lost myself," Oliveira said. "But I find it!"

Other guests said they were more concerned about the construction noise, which woke them up at 7 a.m. even though the hotel has double-paned windows that are supposed to muffle sounds.

Despite these problems, Horowitz said he was still pleased with the hotel’s location, which offers unique views of the World Trade Center rebuilding. And if the new crane helps take down the unsightly Deutsche Bank building sooner, "It can’t be a bad thing," Horowitz said.

The Show Will Go On at WTC's Performing Arts Center

Frank Gehry's building blocks live! A bunch of politicians, including Mayor Bloomberg, Governor Paterson and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, just remembered that the World Trade Center Performing Arts Center is something that's supposed to exist, so they've announced an agreement to create a $100 million fund (thanks, Feds!) to make sure it gets built. The cultural capital of Lower Manhattan was in the WTC redevelopment master plan but has been bounced around like a ping pong ball during all the drama surrounding Ground Zero's rebuilding. It barely survived, and the only tenant still signed up is the Joyce dance company. In 2006 Frank Gehry was enlisted to design the building—which will include a 1,000-seat theater, a smaller second stage, rehearsal space, classrooms and a café—but we haven't seen much of the design so far. Dance for us, Gehry!

There will be some great views of the Freedom Tower from around the site.

that would be awesome! it would just make the way the buildings slowly lose height even better!

RobertWalpole Oct 20, 2010 11:42 PM

If T5 is hotel/residential, it should be at least 900 feet tall.

JSsocal Oct 20, 2010 11:51 PM

I actually like Libeskind's place holder there. It actually works, its slender and fits well with the site. Maybe it would make up for losing control of the design of the rest of the buildings for the site

NYC4Life Oct 21, 2010 3:54 AM

Just glad to see the original plans for Tower 5 were scrapped. Now a 900 footer would be awesome, would really complete the entire WTC complex.

Charges Stand Against Construction Workers In Former Deutsche Bank Building Fire
By: NY1 News

Quote:

A judge ruled Friday not to dismiss charges against three construction officials in connection with the 2007 fire that killed two firefighters at the former Deutsche Bank building.

Mitchel Alvo, Salvatore DePaola, and Jeffrey Melofchik now face a trial on manslaughter and other charges in the August 2007 fire.

The trial is set for January 18, 2011.

Alvo and DePaola worked for the company John Galt, which was hired to take down the building after it sustained seriously damage during the September 11th terrorist attacks.

Melofchik was the site safety manager for Bovis General Land Lease, the general contractor that hired Galt to do the work.

The men say they were unfairly blamed for the accident that was a product of others' failures on the site. The fire was started by a cigarette dropped by a construction worker.

http://media.ny1.com/media/2010/10/2...anino_wide.jpg

Prosecutors say the men knew about a break in a firefighting water pipe and covered it up. Officials say the lack of the standpipe was a critical factor in the deaths of firefighters Robert Beddia and Joseph Graffagnino.

Defense attorneys argue the men did not realize the pipe was a standpipe, and that inspectors allegedly never flagged it.

In her decision issued Friday, Judge Rena Uviller said, "Given their positions and responsibilities and their awareness that the standpipe was the only source of water for firefighting, the Grand Jury was entitled to conclude that the defendants should have foreseen that in dismantling and failing to repair the pipe, they had created a substantial and unjustifiable risk of death to responding firefighters as well as others."

The judge urged both sides to act quickly in exchanging information, like witness lists and potential exhibits that will be used in the case.

All three defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges.
