Here's the Pacific-Southwest Trust & Savings Bank at South Main Street & West Washington Boulevard in 1924. Even though USC have the correct address, which is just below the Santa Monica Freeway, and not far from the Mode O'Day building, they have this picture labeled as Carson! Potash and Perlmutter is a silent comedy released in 1923. The Tally's poster below is pretty washed out, but appears to say "First time at popular prices D. W. Griffith's America".

Still standing, and pretty much intact. The bank was in the store marked "P.I.A.". I thought the first picture might have been when the building was new, but I've found build dates of 1909 and 1912. Some sites name the structure as the Da Capo Building, although I'm not sure how much of the building that covers. The entrance in the middle is The Rutland Apartments, which appears in the City Directories as far back as 1915.

I'm guessing this might be an Easter sunrise service. Does the hilltop look familiar to anyone?

I went there once as a kid when they lead fuel was still in use. It was awful -- never went back. The freeway proximity was disturbing, even as a kid. It must have been so nice before the freeway. The pool itself is very nice and designed for young children. It is four feet at its deepest.

In 1924, Tally's most probably referred to Tally's Broadway Theater at 833 S Broadway. http://rescarta.lapl.org:8080/ResCar..._doc=tally%27s

The Tally's name was associated with several addresses, including 311 S Spring, 388 S Spring, 262 S Main (the one with all the lights), 544 S Broadway, and 833 S Broadway (Demolished in '29.)

Griffith's "America," advertised as playing at Tally's, starred Neil Hamilton. A few oldsters may remember Neil playing Commissioner Gordon in the '60s Batman series.

According to UCI Libraries, Norm's Landing was located at what is today called the Ports O' Call Village in San Pedro. The pink building to the left of the Norm's Landing sign was the Fisherman's Wharf Restaurant. See the interior below.

I have to tell you, this picture of Buster Keaton really made me smile. Buster Keaton appeared on Candid Camera in 1961, playing an old man simply trying to eat a meal at a lunch counter. I beg you to look at the clip below and watch as Buster Keaton has one mishap after another with coffee and a sandwich....and his toupee.

In April 1909, Jacob Riis of New York, a friend of President Theodore Roosevelt, was in town to give an address at the Mission Inn. He suggested holding an Easter sunrise service at the top of the mountain, and on the following Sunday the first non-denominational outdoor Easter Sunrise Service in the United States was held at the top of the mount.
In 1912 an estimated crowd of 3,000 people were present to hear Henry Van Dyke read his poem, God of the Open Air. Each year attendance grew. In 1918 plans for an open-air 10,000-seat amphitheater designed by architect Frederick Heath were considered, but they were never implemented.
The annual service became nationally and internationally known, drawing huge crowds and celebrities, including opera soprano Marcella Craft. In 1915 the Southern Pacific Railroad provided a special service from Los Angeles to Riverside just for the event. The Pacific Electric trolley system also implemented special service from Los Angeles, Corona, Redlands, and San Bernardino. Peak attendance in the 1920s was reported to have exceeded 30,000.
The popularity of the Rubidoux Easter sunrise services spawned many other such services throughout the country, including an annual service at the Hollywood Bowl.[
