NEW YORK | One World Trade Center | 1,776' Pinnacle / 1,373' Roof | 104 FLOORS | 2014

Quote:

As the first office tower to rise on the World Trade Center site, One World Trade Center recaptures the New York skyline, reasserts downtown Manhattan’s preeminence as a business center, and establishes a new civic icon for the country. It is a memorable architectural landmark for the city and the nation — a building whose simplicity and clarity of form will remain fresh and timeless. Extending the long tradition of American ingenuity in high-rise construction, the design solution is an innovative mix of architecture, structure, urban design, safety, and sustainability.

One World Trade Center is a bold icon in the sky that acknowledges the adjacent memorial. While the memorial, carved out of the earth, speaks of the past and of remembrance, One World Trade Center speaks about the future and hope as it rises upward in a faceted form filled with, and reflecting, light. This tower evokes the slender, tapering triangular forms of great New York City icons such as the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building and replaces almost one quarter of the office space lost on September 11, 2001.

As the tower rises from a cubic base, its square edges are chamfered back, transforming the square into eight tall isosceles triangles in elevation. At its middle, the tower forms a perfect octagon in plan and then culminates in a glass parapet whose plan is a 150-foot-by-150-foot square, rotated 45 degrees from the base. Its overall effect is that of a crystalline form that captures an ever-evolving display of refracted light. As the sun moves through the sky or we move around the tower, the surfaces appear like a kaleidoscope, and will change throughout the day as light and weather conditions change.

^ Great pics, NYguy! After seeing the construction thread was "closed," I freaked out for a second, then used my brain... It's DONE! :D

I forget exactly, somewhere around 5 or 6 ft. But that would take us away from the "1,776 ft" height, so no can do.

There's still time for someone to submit their photos to the official competition (to win a scale model of the tower):

One WTC is a milestone and the overall site already looks amazing. I'll be making a progress video towards the end of the month for a recap of this year's progress as well as stepping into the future.

That's crazy. I'm not saying we should have the almost slave-labor practices Dubai employs when building its towers, but I wonder just how much money could have been saved without all the political wrangling, infighting, PA and union kickbacks, corruption, redesigns, wasted high-cost materials, and other boondoggles this project suffered over the last decade plus.

Thought it was an angle not captured often. No one's cool enough to take pics on the subway. ;)

Beautiful pictures from everyone as usual! It's such a stunning building and I'm looking forward to seeing 3WTC and hopefully 2WTC join this skyscraper.

You're seeing the same photo repeat year after year. What's new in downtown?

Same building, but I've yet to see exactly the same picture... Even from the "infinite" angle, looking up, there are subtleties of the moment which make it unique.

The lighting really has a big effect... I'm constantly surprised at the vibrant diversity of shots.

I suppose it's like complaining you're seeing the same photo of the Empire State Building year after year. :sly:

Has anyone made note of the fact that Google Earth has finally updated their scan of the city?

Nice addition to the NY skyline, but I would have rather they rebuilt Yamasaki's twins.
