On the trail of the San Pedro palms
I've been searching online newspaper archives for any articles about the Arcade palm's move in 1914. Look what I found about one of its siblings:
Los Angeles Herald, Volume XL, Number 2, 13 April 1893: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-E...721%2520PM.jpg California Digital Newspaper Collection I assume this would be the southernmost of the 4 palms along the wall. Now, to find out whether they actually did ship it to Chicago... |

See item #4 on the list at this link: http://www.history.com/news/7-things...go-worlds-fair "A century old palm"? Maybe half a century. LOL This one claims the palm was 127 years old!: http://area.northwestcollege.edu/id/...SLEBODNICK.pdf Hmmm, the pic here does not show a fan palm, although it's flanked by a pair: http://books.google.com/books?id=opl...page&q&f=false Oh, the old palm was from San Diego. Bummer: http://books.google.com/books?id=QYE...20Palm&f=false An 1891 World's Fair Company certificate signed by Henry T. A couple more for tonight - from the same database:
A brief mention of the Arcade palm in an article about moving big trees, from the Los Angeles Herald, Volume XXVIII, Number 13, 14 October 1900: "About ten years ago the giant palm standing in front of the Arcade station was moved there at a cost of $250. Since the palm has been in this isolated position it has been unfruitful." "Notes" column, Los Angeles Herald, Volume 40, Number 108, 28 July 1893: "A team attached to a hack ran away at the Arcade depot yesterday and collided with the iron fence surrounding the big palm tree. The hack was overturned and the driver was thrown from his box but he pluckily caught the horses and held them, while an athletic young man, one of the train dispatchers, assisted the people in the carriage, three, a little girl and a man, out of their perilous position through the window." Good thing that fence was there! |

Arcade Palm
A recent instagram of Arcade palm by Nathan Masters:

__ This is the first I've heard of a stained glass dome in the lobby of the Herman W. Hellman Building (built 1903) at Fourth & Spring. http://www.centuryhousing.org/blog/?p=1091 http://imageshack.us/a/img845/6198/aabbancolobby1.jpg http://www.centuryhousing.org/blog/?p=1091 The building was recently renovated into apartments. Here's an interesting comment. http://imageshack.us/a/img812/2672/a...ol2comment.jpg http://www.ladowntownnews.com/news/b...9bb2963f4.html This is the building that also has the initials H.W.H. in cartouches along the facade. I think these initials might be the design in the center of the dome. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=5990 http://imageshack.us/a/img191/7839/aabbancohwh.jpg gsv detail __ |
