So I imagine the Annandale-Rockdale service station might have been where the R in Rockdale is on your map. Or more precisely, the blue dot below. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...923/CizZm9.jpg detail Is that 'Puppy Peak' or 'Poppy Peak'on the map? :previous: (I just noticed there's a 'Poppy Place', so I'm guessing Poppy, not Puppy, Peak is correct) -tongue twister! The black square with the flag on Poppy Peak denotes a school house, right? Well guess what, there's still a school there....Annandale Elementary School. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/dlQSCV.jpggsv *I just spent the better part of the afternoon looking for a photograph of the original school on Poppy Peak Drive, but I didn't have any luck. One last look at Sam Drucker and his gas station. ;) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...924/KzbpZN.jpg www.oldgas.com |
Here are some of the images from Julius Shulman's "Job 4709: Wurdeman & Becket, Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company Building (Los Angeles, Calif.), 1971". The set contains a mixture of color and black & white photos, nearly all of which are long shots. I've picked a selection, starting in color.
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original Now the black & white pictures. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original In the distance, to the right of Mutual Benefit Life building, is the California Federal tower. In the foreground to the right of that is a corner of 724 South Genesee Avenue which we discussed in March. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original This is the only shot looking away from the building. It shows part of the LACMA across Wilshire. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original All from Getty Research Institute Today, 5900 Wilshire Boulevard looks very like it did 45 years ago. Since 2014, the name of nightclub owner SBE has been on the top. You can read a bit about their leasing of the building in this LA Times article. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...5.jpg~original GSV |
Yesterday I briefly mentioned Ann Corio.
Florentine Gardens, Los Angeles http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/12zv5H.jpg old file Ann Corio made her way to Los Angeles in 1940. Between 1941 and 1944 she appeared in several Hollywood "B" motion pictures which featured her in scanty costumes beginning with 'Swamp Woman' (1941), the best known of which was perhaps 1942’s 'Jungle Siren' opposite Buster Crabbe. In 1944 she made 'Call of the Jungle' and 'Swamp Girl'." I found a few photographs of Ms. Corio before she made her way out to the west coast. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...921/PUw3jQ.jpg https://www.flickr.com/photos/boston...ry/7543762344/ Waiting to go on stage. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/N9sfwm.jpg https://www.flickr.com/photos/boston...ry/7543762718/ Velvet cape with swan feathers (?) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...924/KH5aj5.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...922/nCAMbJ.jpg https://www.flickr.com/photos/boston...ry/7543762736/ Here she is looking a bit more refined out in Hollywood. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...921/IyTl3U.jpg https://retrorambling.files.wordpres...117086_ac5.jpg __ |
"Downtown Los Angeles, 1972"
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/gHY0kg.jpg eBay -note the glass 'prisms' embedded in the sidewalk to let light into the basements. If I remember correctly, we first talked about them in the early days of the thread. Do these underground spaces that extend beyond the building show up on baist maps? I know of one here in Lafayette that's a recording studio. __ |
'mystery' corner in highland Park,
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...923/O1joxu.jpg eBay I also see a red 'liquor' sign in front of that old house. _ |

North Figueroa Street at North Avenue 50 - it's still a body shop. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...p.jpg~original GSV |
:previous: Very cool....it still has the three little 'portholes'.
It's too bad the older home is gone. It looked noirish with the liquor store built on in front of it. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...921/VR1AXP.jpg detail Note the large flue...perhaps the place served food as well:previous: I just noticed the poster for 'Husbands' starring Cassevettes, Gazzara & Falk. |

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...sca0kbbhd.jpeg http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...slhzsmw1q.jpeg Their web page on school history mentions their original location was at Figueroa and Ruby, but that it was a small two room building with a bungalow added later, and that was around the 1900-1910 timeframe. No mention of when they moved to the current site, nor any mention of the original brick building. If I had to guess though, I'd say the "Annandale Boulevard School" building pictured above was built in the 1920's during the big population boom. I checked our LAUSD facilities web site, and I can't find any construction information on the current school building, though it looks to be roughly 40's/50's vintage. Perhaps the original brick building was irreparably damaged by the 1933 Long Beach earthquake? Seems a bit far... |
:previous: Thank so much for your help jbange!
(that house atop the hill might be the same one in the Annandale-Rockdale service station photo) __ |
Dug a little further on the LAUSD Facilities Services Division web site and didn't find anything else on Annandale.... but I did find an interesting "then and now" aerial picture set of several old schools presented in the World's Most Annoying Interactive Format

Not to beat a dead horse, but....
Here's Dave Barham, founder of Hot Dog on a Stick, posing in a stand with his frozen variety. (he has the same haircut that my Dad had) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/M6VZ1M.jpg http://hdoskorea.wix.com/hdoskorea?_...cjg9/image_tyb I haven't much info on the photo because the web-site (where I found this image) is in Korean! Here is an image from March 28, 1964. Using my awesome powers of deduction I've decided these people have just visited 'Hotdog on a Stick'. ;) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/aAgQqe.jpg https://www.flickr.com/photos/huffst...7624301917226/ and here's another, also from 1964. While we're in the Santa Monica area....
I thought this was interesting. "The Cheetah Club next to Pacific Ocean Park on the pier." http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/wo3jd1.jpg Is the building that once housed the Cheetah Club still standing? Looking at aerials, I can't quite figure out where it was located exactly. There isn't much information, but this is where I found the above photo. http://pastdaily.com/2014/06/29/play...op-chronicles/ __ I'm off to Illinois to visit my Mom. -have fun noirishers! |

I just happened upon this thread after discovering the pictured newspaper clipping and wondering if anyone knew more about this establishment. The clipping was found in some newspaper that my grandfather had wrapped around some glassware... dated Jan 31st, 1950. The artwork is a total crack up. http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/...pszx7bxtyt.jpg Hope this kicks off some more discussion. Also, this is my first post here - Apologies for any missteps in posting etiquette. -RD |

Welcome to the thread, RD. I think you managed your first post perfectly. That's a great clipping - let's hope we can dig up a picture of the place now. |
After literally days of having a nearly functioning website, Photobucket is once again refusing show my images at full size. I'll restore them to their true size if Photobucket ever fix their problems! Images restored to fill size.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original The house is almost on the street, and has the covered area on the left instead of garages. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original The set also contains some color images. This one shows the large glass walls and the pond which goes from inside to outside. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original From the view of earth through the window, I'm guessing that this is at the back of the house. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original Lots of six-pointed stars in this hanging decoration. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...5.jpg~original A look at the living area in color. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...6.jpg~original And finally, here's the view from the garden.
