The old right-of-way for red line streetcars (now a popular hiking path) is below the family's home. Hmm, were red cars still running on the line in 1954?

The Flickr account I saw this on lists it as Spring Street, but a Twitter source indicates it's a dirt road east of the Broadway tunnel, which sounds more likely.

I'm pretty sure that this road was called "Justica" and I agree that this is not Spring Street. I believe the road went from Sunset to Temple next to the Broadway Tunnel. I seem to remember a picture similar to this one on the LAPL site.

Here's the area in 1929. I believe that Justica is the unmade road starting near the center and heading toward the top of the image. For reference, the Hall of Justice is just left of center at the bottom of the image.

Well, over the years Justicia suffered the fate of so many early roadbeds being known by various names. At the time of Martin's original pic (dating by the late 20s/early 30s cars) Justicia while still known by most old timers as Justicia had also become known as Buena Vista and even N. Broadway (with which it aligned north of Sunset). From Sunset looking south, it reached all the way to Temple where it ended directly across from the County Courthouse. In Hoss' pic you can see Justicia as a dirt track coming from Sunset and being paved south of Ft. Moore Place. Notice all the parked cars from that point down to the courthouse (out of frame at the bottom) and alongside of the brand new Hall of Justice. This little street was always one of my personal favorites.
