Where was our first photo taken from?

Our inaugural photo. Does anyone know where it was taken from? I'd like to do a now version of this great night time shot.

Good choices.

REO was popular from the early 1900s, but the "Speedwagon" would not have arrived on the scene for at least another two decades. "J Starship" might have been untimely and equally inappropriate. But . . . 1910 Fruitgum Company . . . ? :uhh:

'03 Reo. Forget the speed, as long as there is ample light. 1960 photo.

Was at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown at my dentist's office (in the same building strangely enough) and captured a few images of the lobby and the amazing artwork and architecture on the ceiling. If you have never been there before, it is something to see. It is almost like walking into a museum!!

Saw this really cool old building (used to be a Masonic Temple) on Brand Blvd across from Americana Mall in Burbank. I dunno if they are fixing it up or planning to raze it as has been the trend in this area recently to build luxury apts :(

3404 S. Figueroa St is the given address for the Casa Figueroa Adobe, built in 1846. Any steps to preserve it by surrounding it with trailers or disguising it to look like the Richfield Tower? When was it replaced by the home of USC's Basketball team?

I've been trying to match the angle with Google Earth, using the reference point of where the roof of the Hall of Justice intersects with the left edge of the City Hall tower.

I think this view is from Mount Lookout, an area that was wiped out by the construction of Dodger Stadium. Here's a map:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/--...2520AM.bmp.jpg
Calisphere

Of the two wide streets at the bottom of the map, Chavez Ravine Road is now Stadium Way, and Lilac Terrace is still Lilac Terrace. Everything north of that is Dodger Stadium property. All those twisty roads marked Mount Lookout are now the parking lot in front of Dodger Stadium.

Here's a modern view - I have marked two possible viewpoints with red squares:

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-D...724%2520AM.jpg
Google Earth

Going north from Lilac Terrace, there is a hillside, then a level of parking lot, then another small hill up to a higher level of parking lot that encircles Dodger Stadium. I think your best bet for recreating the angle is going to be that upper level parking lot, straight out from the front of the stadium. That's the upper red square marker. You could also try the edge of the lower parking area, that looks down onto Lilac Terrace. I marked a second possibility towards the bottom of the pic - there's an empty hillside above Chavez Ravine Place, next to the Kaiser Mental Health Center. I think that anything else with a similar line of sight is going to be too low, blocked by buildings or hillside.

Undated. - Home on the corner of Hobart and Washington boulevards. Perfect for those fond of shingles. There are some lovely homes reminiscent of this one on South Hobart.

Curious about the obelisk near the driveway. Was it: an address marker, post designed to support mailbox or driveway light, or maybe an homage to hitching posts of years gone by? There appears to be a sign in front of driveway. "Tom Mix keep you horse Tony on the street?"

Fred A. Cutler, the probable builder, lived here in 1909. Its address was 1902 Hobart Blvd then, and 1902 South Hobart after the address realignments following the annexation of Hollywood and other districts. I don't know about the post at the curb, but maybe that's Cutler's name carved into the horseblock to its left.

Found this apparently hand-colored shot of one of my favorite bits of L.A.--the stretch of Figueroa in front of the famous Stimson house, which still stands, of course. Its neighbor to the right, the Slauson house, is gone, as is its southerly neighbor, the Sabichi house. The Sabichi's driveway contour is preserved, however...

...as are features of its fencing:

What I really like about this short stretch of Figueroa is that it has remnants of the zanjas... check out this old post:

Thanks. Overlooked the other photo.

This looks like new construction. It also looks like the sidewalks, pathways and driveway are poured concrete. Were concrete slabs popular during the horse and buggy age, or could this home have been designed with horseless carriages in mind? Maybe the obelisk is a hitching post.

Gates Hotel, 830 W 6th has been mentioned before. Lasted from '12 to '72.

Does look like the post would be at the horse's bit and the horseblock where the carriage would stop.

There was a zanja along the south side of Adams. It was decommissioned in 1901. See The Los Angeles River: Its Life, Death, and Possible Rebirth by Blake Gumprecht, among other sources.

As part of a recent digital-zanja expedition, I neglected to specially mention two photos of Horace Bell's pampas-preferred Figueroa residence (1337 Figueroa Street, just below Pico). Easy to overlook the small print on one of the pictures with his name printed at the bottom and even easier to overlook his name on raised stone markers near the sidewalk, at the bottom of each photo.

fhammon and others have noted that Bell was a colorful character who had more roles than an opium addicted fiction writer could imagine. He wrote about early LA History, including the Bella Union. For more Bella Union, see http://skyscraperpage.com/forum/showpost.php?p=5131064 ; http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=4541. Nathan Masters of KCET fame also wrote about the Bella Union here: http://www.kcet.org/updaily/socal_fo...l-history.html The City of Bell was not named for Horace. That distinction goes to James George Bell and family whose 1876 home is pictured at bottom. One more tangent, Horace Bell's 1337 Figueroa address and its pampas was later developed for bowling.
