I'm trying to restrict myself to one of these 1952 Julius Shulman/Bank of America photosets per day :). This one's titled "Job 1352: Bank of America (Los Angeles, Calif.)1952". This time the bank was on Florence Avenue at Holmes Avenue, and had a rather impressive roof sign. I also like the Hudson outside.
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original This is the view from Beach Street. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original The Florencita Theatre, on the corner of Walnut Drive, is no longer there. As far as I can tell from Historic Aerials, it was demolished between 1980 and 1994. According to cinematreasures.org, it had 575 seats. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original All from Getty Research Institute The bank building, minus its sign, is still standing, although it has looked better. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original GSV The First Full Gospel Assembly of Florence building and its neighbor are also still there http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...5.jpg~original GSV The Florencita Theatre may have gone, but I found this attractively decorated pet store next to where it used to be. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...6.jpg~original GSV |
:previous: I'm riding on your coat-tails again Hoss. :) I hope you don't mind.
I jumped in the google-mobile to get a better look at that multi-colored pet store, but didn't get any further than Pancho's Bakery (located in the Full Gospel Assembly building) art deco http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...538/Mecwwb.jpg gsv Intrigued, I looked online and came across an earlier photograph of Pancho's Bakery. (the new paint job highlighting the art deco lines is a major improvement) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...909/cHraDf.jpg http://looocobooy.blogspot.com/2010/...m-beneath.html That said, I hope they saved the mutant coffee cup, concha and croissant. :previous: It has some very pleasing elements in the basic design. It makes me wonder what the building looked like when it was first built.
*I just found out the building was built in 1906! http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...910/jSM0NV.jpg http://www.homefacts.com/address/Cal...154656774.html And the last major renovation was in 1910. Just before he died he lived just a few blocks from me in Long Beach, CA but my mother kept that a secret. She didn't want me to have any more contact with him. Contrary to the IMBd website bio he later died in NY City in 1985. Making a face.... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...psehmsvvr3.jpg |

Thank you CBD. Wonderful post And that's a great shot of your cousin. It is so exhausting when we can't be ourselves. Everyone loses. |

2440 Monterey Road, San Marino, 1925. https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...e8&oe=563A8829 USC Archive 2440 Monterey Road, San Marino, August 23, 2015. https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...0d&oe=56717182 Photo by me Somewhere along the line, the house was added on to. I would never have known that, had I not seen the old photo (I drive down this street often). Also, the corner steps and walkway to the front door were moved some time as well, obviously. They are to the right of the hedge, out of frame, in the modern pic. I can't believe the house is already at least 90 years old. In my lifetime, it used to be that a house that was a hundred years old was a Victorian, and then later a Craftsman. Pretty soon, these Spanish Colonial-style houses will be hitting the century mark. |

We're going a little further afield with this branch of Bank of America. One year later than my previous posts, these Julius Shulman pictures date from 1953. They show the bank at 117 E Huntington Drive in Arcadia. The set is called "Job 1562: Bank of America (Los Angeles, Calif.),1953". I found the following information about the store on the left at arcadiapubliclibrary.blogspot.com: "Charles Shugert was the proprietor of The House of Toys, an inviting store that once occupied 111-113 East Huntington Drive. This store was an institution during the late 1950s in Arcadia but closed its doors around 1961."
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original This time the roof sign had to compete with the one from the United States National Bank across the street. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original A view from the opposite direction showing the intersection with First Avenue. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original All from Getty Research Institute I believe this is the old bank building, although it's been slightly modified. It was never as interesting as the previous examples. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original GSV I think the building that once housed Arcadia Jewelers is still standing too, but I struggled to find anything interesting about the current buildings on this block. It was only when I took the Googlemobile west of First Avenue that I found the old Arcadia Tribune building at 53 E Huntington Drive. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...5.jpg~original GSV Even in 1975, possible only 40 years after it came into existence, no one could remember when it was built. I love the quote from the head of the building department. After he hazards a guess at the build date, he says "It seems like it was always there." This article is from January 12, 1975 edition of the Arcadia Tribune. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...6.jpg~original www.newspapers.com |

See the 4 square holes (air vents) at the peak of the Garland's building in the modern intersection photo above. They're missing in the 1953 photograph (below). http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...540/cThRXN.jpg detail __ Thanks for the additional information on Drusilla Faddis oldstuff. _ |
thanks so much for posting these old photos of LA, been fascinating seeing it back in the day! :)
