It does look like Hollywood, but that isn’t The Fontenoy.

:previous: Thanks Godzilla.
As you can see, there used to be a line of Eucalyptus trees out front. (at least I think they're Eucalyptus) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/FYY5eL.jpg martinturnbill "The Fred Thomson building – aka the “Court of Olive” (as it was called in 1929) – at 6530 Sunset Boulevard. It was was built by silent western star Fred Thomson and his wife, Frances Marion, around 1928 (the year Thomson died). This is before the Cat and the Fiddle and Travis Banton’s dress shop were situated there. I’m so glad that this building still there (well, mostly) probably because it closely resembles both in architecture and feel the Garden of Allah. It also reminds me of the Vine Street Brown Derby." from Martin Turnbill......HI MARTIN:hi: Hmmm. . . maybe the trees are Olive trees since the place used to be named, 'Court of Olives'. This is interesting even though it's blurry. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/tmJbpz.jpg larchmontbuzz "The backdrop of mountains must have been painted in, as the property sits on the south side of Sunset Blvd." I believe that's a bakery at far right I think the sign said Schaefer's. . |

The tallest limb at center is I think indeed a Eucalyptus, but coming from somewhere behind the row of Peppers (maybe in the courtyard)??? |

The Hollywood Tower doesn't appear to have that facade from any angle. It must be some other building and much taller? |

Seeing that first photo again reminded me that back in 2014 I was contacted by someone named Matthew Sullivan from an architectural firm called Lee and Associates. They (or at least he) was involved in the restoration of the Free Thompson building. I haven't driven past it in a while to see how it looks these days or how extensive it the restoration was. Has anyone been there lately? I'm no tree expert but do pepper trees grow to be that tall? I am an Aussie so I am familiar with eucalyptus trees but they don't look very eucalyptus-y to me. And olive trees tend to be shorter and rounder than that, don't they? At least the one on the other side of the street from me does. Oh and hi to you too, ethereal_reality  |

Gripe: In 2016 Disney's California Adventure theme park remodeled the favorite ride "Hollywood Tower of Terror" which resembled the actual Hollywood Tower building. It's one attraction I really loved there. But California Adventure is losing more and more of it's "California" theme. This attraction was changed to: The Guardians of the Galaxy Mission: Breakout! How California is that? I can't abide to post a photo of what it looks like now, but if you want to see it, you can click this link: HERE. A comparison photo of the original and the redone: HERE. |
I don't believe we've had the cafe at Coulter's Dry Goods before . . .
https://i.postimg.cc/pT2pBqc9/Coulter001.jpg odinthor collection It was in operation by 1906: https://i.postimg.cc/ZnnnG0S4/Coulter-Her1-17-06.jpg Los Angeles Herald, 1/17/1906 And it had a separate but equal Men's Grill by 1909: https://i.postimg.cc/C525SYhD/Coulter-Her4-20-09.jpg Los Angeles Herland, 4/20/1909 They seem to have run a smooth and fortunate operation there, as I alas can find no lurid stories about it to share, such as "Waitress spills Mock Turtle Soup on Society Matron; Unrepentant!" or "Cafe accuses patron of bending fork; Diner blames chef's tough steak; court to decide." |
