Really? To me it's a younger relative to the Sears Tower.

I agree. I feel like the similarity/homage to Sears Tower is unmistakable.

maru2501 Apr 16, 2019 4:25 PM

there's some signage going up on the north face today (relatively low) that I assume is temporary.. the "NE.." were up as of mid morning, which I guess will spell NEMA and what, a phone number?
The N and E were entire floors tall

No, I meant the last of Nick's 3 photos just doesn't look like Chicago to me in any way. Dubai or Miami perhaps.

All new shiney high-rises - no older building stock.

Just saw that, I'd guess you're spot on. Might say NEMA RENT and then a number below

I definitely see the resemblance, but from this angle, OMP, and it's neighbor look like completely different buildings. Throw in NEMA (which is relatively new) and to me it looks 'foreign' in a sense.

Long story short, I haven't taken any photos of the backside of these developments, let alone from so close, so it's just a completely fresh look to me.

The Lurker Apr 17, 2019 3:23 PM

I agree with both points. If you showed that shot to 100 people 15 years ago, none of them would guess it's Chicago.

However NEMA does without question pay homage to Sears (bundled tube) and Vinoly himself has made it clear that was the intention.

The relationship between the two is incredible coming in from the south. Together they absolutely dominate and yet beautifully frame the rest of the skyline. Like a gateway into the city formed by two buildings that couldn't be more "Chicago"

Anybody got a recent shot from Comiskey Park area?

Why? They do that sort of signage to advertise for rent in most new buildings...

The one across 727 Madison is pretty egregious

and we are traditionally strict with signage right

They are strict on permanent signage, certainly. Never saw anything about Vista doing that. When did that happen?

Super early on, when they put up the massive climbing framework. had everybody's logos and "LUXURY CONDOS COMING 2020" on a black background, and since they painted over such expensive signage i assumed it was because of the NIMBYs, but just a guess.

Was back when I was living in LSE, I have some pics and videos of the sign on my hard drive at home i will try to dig up

I personally have no problem with some good ole fashioned chicago advertising (see: pabst blue ribbon sign of yesteryear, hahah)

It's actually 50k/mo...and it's only 1548 square feet!

https://i.imgur.com/OcmY6SI.png

I'm actually moving into the building in June and when I did the online lease signing I was shocked to see the rent range displayed at $1800-$50,000/mo on the homepage of the software they use.

$387/sqft is outrageous. Let's hope that was an egregious typo on your lease paperwork on both the square footage and the price.

That being said, congrats on the new place! Looking forward to pictures when settled in.

Thanks! I thought the typo thing too but it's on the website. If you go to the availability page its the 3S-A layout but the link to view the floorplans just says "contact us". If you click any of the other floorplans that say "more details" it opens a new page and you can select 3S-A from the floorplans dropdown on that page to see pricing(and an image of the layout for the penthouse).

Interesting. You pay a lot for the privilege of it being the penthouse:
  • #7600: $50K for a 1548 sq ft 3 BR
  • #6800: $9K for the identical layout, 8 floors down
  • #7106: $25K for a 2701 sq ft 4 BR

No, it's just $32 psf. :runaway:

SoLo showing some beautiful lines!

Great views....

BuildThemTaller Apr 25, 2019 12:30 PM

Some of those last shots are really cool. They remind me of the the view from Lincoln Park, looking south. Or of Central Park in NYC. A few more years, some more growth of those trees in Maggie Daley Park (and some more South Loop skyscrapers) and this will be an even better view. City in the park.

That area looks prime for tons of infill. Will be nice going forward as the area fills up, further elongating the skyscraper mass.

The big open area on the river on the right is the site of the 78. See the thread for that. There's also a few high rises (30 story range) in this view that just started construction in the last few weeks or month.

Yes it needs the Clark/Division Jewel treatment. Also the TJ's lot should be built on and TJ's should reorient itself to the street. I hate having to walk through alley by the dumpster to buy groceries.

SteelMonkey May 4, 2019 3:37 AM

I may have missed this earlier in the discussion but assuming that NEMA sign on the building is sales related and temporary?

Mr Downtown May 4, 2019 4:23 AM

^Yes, just paper taped to the inside of the windows.

maru2501 May 4, 2019 2:26 PM

the 78 really needs to fill in from that angle

SIGSEGV May 4, 2019 6:55 PM

DP2 will look ridiculous when the 78 starts filling in. I guess DP1 is already ridiculous although it's not quite as lowrise.

KWillChicago May 7, 2019 8:08 PM

Looking at that picture of the crown close up, I wonder what they are going to do with the lighting? If they just light the glass up into a solid cube it's going to look funky. I hope they at least do some fading in and out or changing colors. Somthing.

And if you really want to stretch it a bit further, OMP and 311 W Wacker have a little dance going on the more I look at them.

Also, amazing photos today on all your posts, but I think these ones were my favs. This tower makes me want a few more Vinoly's before he retires.

SIGSEGV May 8, 2019 4:48 AM

OMP actually looks ok from that angle.

bnk May 8, 2019 4:59 AM

I personally ever wanted or asked for its taller twin. But the last photo session as alleviated my fears. Build it up strong. If there are askers than take them.

I was never a fan of dual towers but this one seems legit and might fill more south loop with masses more than the other ones stuck in the dirt.

So if the demand is there than I will accept it and get my special approval.

Its my personal aldermanic prerogative privilege to say so.
