What a hulking beast

Bonsai Tree Nov 25, 2017 8:28 PM

Wow. . . This thing is only about 1/4 of the way up.

donnie Nov 25, 2017 9:22 PM

And to think this the smaller of the two brothers!

I still think it looks better with the crown.

^The first setback along Indiana isn't until about the 26th floor.

KWillChicago Nov 26, 2017 11:20 AM

Keep on chugging little man. At the fast rate their building this thing you would think its already sold out and their making plans to start number2. Speaking of which, thats going to be some slim quarters to work with for staging and equipment storage.

This building is 100% rental apartments.

Crescent Heights also owns the land to the southeast of this lot and can use that for staging.

Did they forget to order the glass? Starting to look like Wolf Point West... structure goes up real quick using tables, but no glass following the structure.

This thing is going to be huge. It's going to destroy the South Loop rental market when it delivers, especially since that would be pretty much simultaneous with the one on Michigan.

Randomguy34 Dec 20, 2017 2:19 PM

^ this project, SoMi, and 1136 s Wabash will deliver ~1600 units in the immediate area. Roosevelt ave will definitely feel more lively after all of these developments come online.

Which one on Michigan, the Essex or the SCB with chamfered edges?

I was thinking about the SCB one next to Giordarnos, but yeah Essex too and everything else they are building over there. Dumping a shit ton of units into that area.

2090 by my rough count (Essex, OGP, SoMi, 1136 S. Wabash).

Speaking of somi... How sick would spertus institute be if it were somi's height.

^ 130 N Franklin is the long shot project I'm really hoping materializes in this boom. Probably pretty unlikely though with all the new office space planned for and currently being added to the market.

Oh sick, the pool is cantilevered out over the edge of the building. Very sexy.

Bombardier Dec 27, 2017 4:23 AM

That Indiana elevation is massive. Going to be cool when it is enclosed if they ever decide to order the glass!

That's crazy, i didn't realize what it was till you mentioned it! This might be another tower that looks better in life then on paper like OBP!

I always dreamed of having an infinite pool on the roof of the trump. Aside from vegas, miami and l.a. I dont think i've heard of cool pools on skyscrapers in the US. Im sure thier out there though.

donnie Dec 27, 2017 9:59 AM

I wonder if the extreme cold has any effect on the concrete and does it take longer to cure and if so how much slower or faster does construction move?

Notyrview Dec 27, 2017 3:20 PM

Someone might need to clarify, but i’m pretty sure it doesn’t matter. I remember us talking about it when they poured Trump bc surprise it was barbarically cold then too.

The winter garden at Essex will have an infinity edge pool looking over Lake Michigan. I believe it will be the first in a commercial application in Chicago, but I could be wrong.

Cold temperatures are addressed with set accelerating admixtures in the concrete mix, natural gas heaters under the working deck (which is why you see the white plastic draped under the deck before the pour), and concrete blankets over the top of the pour usually just at the edges. You do not want the temperature of the concrete to change from warm to cold too quickly or it will crack.

However, the frigid temperatures of the last 2 days have effectively shut down concrete operations across the city. The men don't want to work in subzero wind chills.

Nope.

Floors 49-50 are amenities floors. That corner will be open space with a fire pit.

Looks to be about a quarter of the way up - this thing is going to be really big especially if the 2nd tower is built.

We’ve definitely shared some sharply differing aesthetic assessments over the years, but I’ve very rarely agreed with anything ever so much as this.....

How many days/weeks does it take for a floor to be completed? Any rough estimate on when this tower will top out?
