It was very poorly run in recent years. I have a relative who worked there for years and says things have gone way down hill and staff were unhappy. It was over a year ago that he first mentioned he wasn't expecting them to be open much longer.

Stormer Feb 5, 2016 7:17 PM

I understand the Freehouse replacement will similar to the National in Calgary: http://ntnl.ca/

HomeInMyShoes Feb 5, 2016 9:23 PM

I always liked The Freehouse, but it could definitely have had a better indoor space for what was there. They had interesting food options, although the last time I was there the food was just okay.

CCF Feb 6, 2016 6:32 PM

I have great memories of the Freehouse. That being said, if it's anything similar to The National, then it will be successfully. Arguably the most popular chain of pubs in Calgary (4 locations) - three of which are in close proximity to one another (8th Ave, 10th Ave, 17th Ave)

I didn't realize that the mez at the new Atlantis is a boardroom, although it does not seem private. You can also get catering from Malt City.

Capitol patio U/C today. The new trees along Hamilton are leafing out nicely as well. Taste of Tuscany has apparently closed on Scarth.

I heard it was Spices of Punjabi and I heard it was going to be a more authentic Indian menu and that they would be putting a patio on Scarth.

Taste of Tuscany was, for all intents and purposes, an Indian/pakistani restaurant anyway. Had a strong curry smell (good) and curry dishes in the buffet when I was last there over a year ago. Weirdest "italian" place I've ever been to.

From their FB page. There already is a patio.

I noticed this morning as I was walking to work that there are now seven patios on the Scarth Street Mall: Beer Brothers, Gilmour's Corner, Pita Queen, Spices of Punjab and Good Earth - all on the east side of the mall; and Fat Badger and The Chopped Leaf on the west side.

jigglysquishy May 26, 2016 12:05 AM

I'm mean really, Scarth Street in the summer is as good as it gets in Saskatchewan. I'm hoping something interesting goes in the Hill Tower I retail spot as it would lead in nicely to the park

Patio's downtown were busy at lunch today, even with the cooler weather. The Capitol's patio on Hamilton is open and Malt City is building one today!

Stormer Jun 7, 2016 7:15 PM

Tried the new Spices of Punjab on the FW Hill Mall. I had the buffet - it was very good. Sat on the patio. They bring fresh hot naan bread and spicy wings around to the tables. Maybe a bit pricey ($16 buffet) for a quick lunch, but great if you are really hungry.

Loving how many patios are being opened downtown! So happy about all of this!

Gold lettering is going up today on the new Cathedral Social Hall. Progress photos show them being pretty close to completion.

I know it's not downtown, but I went to the east Canadian Brewhouse last night. There was a big line up to get onto the rooftop patio, so we just stayed downstairs. As a sports bar, it's extremely well done - a ton of TVs everywhere. I'm kind of pumped to watch NFL there in the fall. Food was fine, service a little rough, but that's understandable.

Malt City

Had my first experience of Malt City at lunch on Friday the 24th (of June). I found everything - atmosphere, food and especially the service - to be top rate. And great location, with the 2nd Atlantis Coffee next door and basically a shared foyer between them. Great re-use of this beautiful heritage building too. Kudos to all involved!

Hanabi

I noticed they were installing a new sign at Hanabi Restaurant today. The sign was upside down so couldn't read it well but it has a new name, something Izakaya, anyone know the scope?

2250 Albert Street

Anyone know what's going on in the building at 2250 Albert? There is some renos happening, new windows and doors have gone in and looks like the inside is being renoed as well. Would be a good spot for a new pub or restaurant.

2250 Albert Street

I think someone posted on the main thread that it is a real estate office

Popped in to CS Hall today. Wow! It is quite the place. Very large. Patio is not done yet but will also be large.

Stormer Jul 6, 2016 8:52 PM

So the Green Mile is actually becoming a thing. In 2007 when the City designated part of Albert St. to honour the Riders' GC win, it was just a stretch of busy road near Mosaic. In just the last few years all sorts of new establishments have opened including the Keg, Leopold's, Slow Pub, Lot Club and Cathedral Social Hall.

It's not marketed towards me but does anyone know how the Lot Club is doing. It never seems especially busy.

It's been busy any time I've been there. Been to a few sold out events there also. I know a lot of people my age (late 20s, early 30s) like the vibe (and lack of 19 year olds haha). I think they're doing okay and the owners are 30-somethings who know their clientele and what they want so I think they'll continue to do well.

Stormer Jul 8, 2016 8:05 PM

Tried out CSH. I like it. The atmosphere is very casual and loud. The food was good. Service was slow, but very polite. The manager, on his own initiative, came over and apologized and said this was growing pains (second day open) and the would soon be doing much better. He gave us a discount.

I really like the flights of draft. There are so many beers on tap that this gives you a chance to try them out without getting wasted.

Overall a great addition to downtown and the Green Mile.

An Izakaya is a tradional Japanese pub/eating establishment for afterwork drinks and food. Closer to a Spanish tapas than an irish pub with more emphasis on food. It will be interesting to see if they have real Japanese fare and sake or if its just a gimmicky name.

could be the next stage in Regina's cosmopolitan deveopment beyond sushi if it is an izakaya.

Treesplease Jul 9, 2016 8:04 PM

For some reason I thought Hanabi was on Albert st. I didn't realize it was on Broad. Not sure how well an Izakaya will do there as personal safety on that part of broad becomes an issue after dark.
