The Famoso open kitchen is in the middle of the restaurant.

Famoso is ready to open Monday. This place looks great. Still lots of patio weather left too.

Not new but it has a newish patio. Nice story on the Copper Kettle with a video with vintage shots of Scarth St.

Famoso opened today. Tried the takeout pizza. It is pretty decent. It is supposed to be able to be cooked in 90 seconds in their fancy forno.
Looking forward to a Peroni draft on the patio on the next nice afternoon http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/eating/pizza.gifhttp://www.sherv.net/cm/emo/funny/1/...nking-beer.gif https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...00&oe=567D3CA9 https://www.facebook.com/FamosoHillC...type=1&theater |
Their Cavoletti pizza is on my mind way too much.

The owner also told me they are opening up two other locations in the city, one up north, construction starting sometime this fall, and another one in the east end. Really glad they started with the d-town location first though. He also mentioned that there is another pub opening downtown, right beside the fat badger, apparently same owners as Ohanlons. Anyone know anything about this? |

2013 or so definitely stands out as a major inflections point for options downtown. |
Malt City is opening Monday Sept. 7 and it looks great.
Famoso has been a roaring success so far. Packed day and night. The food is good and the atmosphere is lively, but the service is painfully slow for a place that is supposed to be able to bake a pizza in 90 seconds. That should be fixable as they seem to have tons of (inexperienced?) staff. |

I see the 90sec figure on their website, but we sat right by the prep area... I didn't see any pizza stay in the oven for as little as 90seconds. Most were significantly more ("significantly" is relative - so probably 3mins on average). The queuing & prepping of the pizzas takes time - but they were working like mad fools to keep things moving... We asked about takeout, and other than the small, premade pizzas (5" max), they said take-out takes just as long as dine-in - she suggested 30-40mins over the lunch hour. |

Malt City's menu is up on its website. It has a strong local component. You might even call it a bit heavy. Has anyone tired it yet?

This is pretty cool and effective considering Victoria's is surrounded by skyscrapers.

I am counting Dewdney as downtown. I believe there is a Hudson's - Canada's Pub going in to the former Pure Ultra Lounge building. This is based on the giant Moose/Explorer themed mural being painted on the exterior, as well as on prior rumour.
As well this place is in the former New Yorx: http://www.eldoradoregina.com/ Back in June I posted that I understood that Hudson's would be in the New Yorx space and Bobby's Place Old World Tavern would be in the Pure space. Based on the mural and the Eldorado location, I would say that was wrong. |

There's a Hudsons in Saskatoon and it's pretty much always busy. I'm the last person to love chains, but it'll certainly help Dewdney.
|
Well, I am pretty sure this mural is of the Explorer Henry Hudson. The garb and tall ship are of the correct period.

All my info says no. But we'll see.
|
Looks like their colour scheme.
|
It does and it may be. But none of their other locations include gaudy murals.

I can say with confidence that is not Hudson's.

Looks like it is Bobby's Place Olde World Tavern. Someone told me this month's ago. Here is the Moose Jaw mural.

I can safely say I will never be setting place in that...

I see they have started renos on the old R.M. of Sherwood building on Cornwall St., I assume it will hopefully be a bar or restaurant of some type. I think it will complement Malt City!

After an absence of what must be decades, Grandma Lee's has returned to downtown Regina. A location has opened in the Holiday Inn Express on Rose and 11th. I have fond memories of their comfort food - a bowl of hot chili or French onion soup on a cold day.
Older members may remember that they had a location across the street in the basement level of the Midtown Centre. |

Hey guys, if you love prime rib and steak, check out the "chop" at the Southland Mall! They cook their prime rib for 24-hours!!! ( . . . with lower heat and high humidity(?) --- I dunno.) Well, no matter what, you guys need to try it out.
I have been eating prime rib on occasion for 22 year and I have NEVER had prime rib that was soooo amazing!!!! Just trust me. It's the only "chop" in Saskatchewan. |
We just had Chop cater our awards banquet and the prime rib was like chewing gum.
Good to hear yours is better. |

Apparently Cathedral Freehouse has closed. I understand it has been purchased by a local group who will reno it and open a new resto-pub concept in its place.
