“Vessel” Takes Shape at Hudson Yards

“Vessel,” the 15-story, 60-ton, artistic brainchild of British designer Thomas Heatherwick, is taking shape on the grounds of Hudson Yards on the West Side of Manhattan. The first few layers of the eight-floor structure, which will have 2,500 climbable steps, have been assembled in what will be a five-acre plaza and garden that is expected to open sometime in 2018.

Heatherwick has referred to The vessel as a “climbing frame” — what Americans would call a jungle gym — as well as “a Busby Berkeley musical with a lot of steps.” While people will be invited and encouraged to climb “Vessel,” there will also be an elevator for those who can’t make it on their own. The structure, which will have no ceiling, will provide 80 landings for viewing opportunities.

What's the actual material? I'm guessing not a copper skin. If so, will it be kept shiny as in the renders (I imagine) or allowed to develop verdigris?
