I don't think 800 ft would make it the Eiffel Tower, seeing as how it would still be surrounded by taller buildings. But that hardly matters. The Eiffel Tower reference was a reference to being a popular, signature icon. It's just under construction, so of course it's no Eiffel Tower.

Construction officially began on Vessel last month, with the 75 prefabricated interlocking units by Cimolai S.p.A. being shipped from Italy to be assembled on-site. The first 10 pieces have already arrived, with the remaining pieces set to arrive and be lifted into place in the next year.

Vessel should open ahead of the Public Square and Gardens in fall 2018. The first 40 trees for the garden will be planted later this year, followed by more than 28,000 plant species and 200 mature trees. Together with the 200-foot-long fountain that mimics the flow of a river, this centerpiece should be a real eye-catcher.

Blake Hutcheson, President and CEO of Oxford Properties Group, said, “We have always believed that Hudson Yards would give New Yorkers a reason to look up. This spectacular piece by Thomas Heatherwick and Heatherwick Studio goes one step further — it not only gives people a reason to look up, but a reason to go up. A reason to explore and to engage with the city and with one another in a form that is both personal and communal at the same time.”

I think the more apt comparison is to the Rockefeller center Christmas tree... being a year round draw like that. Plus you can't really interact with a tree, no matter how nice... you can actually use the stairs and see different vantage points at different times, you can admire it and be part of it and each person can take that experience whatever way they pereceive. It's interactive art of the best kind. I just really love the whole HY project.... and to think this is just the first phase. There's a whole new neighborhood to be formed yet... the character will be more residential and quieter with only one tower to be used for commercial purposes and not nearly the retail capacity, but it will have its own vibe as well. The West Side as a whole will be an amazing addition to New York.

That is a comparison they use as well, but that's a seasonal thing. It's not a permanent object like the Statue of Liberty, Eiffel Tower, Empire State, etc. Ross was basically saying it will be an icon instantly recognizable around the world as New York. I think that was an understatement, particularly in this age if instagram and everyone taking photos. Not to mention that the site is wrapped by the High Line, already one of the top tourists destinations. There is no doubt that Ross was correct in his assessment. It's also an icon that anyone can visit, it will cost nothing, making it one of the more publicly accessible icons, as open as Times Square itself. I also think the NY Wheel will become an icon, but one that can be seen in other places.

I wasn't clear, sorry... I meant that the Vessel(or whatever the decided name to be chosen with public input) was like the Rockefeller Center Tree but a year round version. It's definitely something that requires interaction, getting different perspectives with all the intricate staircases and landings to view and partake of. While of course not the size and scope of the Eiffel Tower it absolutely will become a frequently photographed, recorded, and experienced must see/ must do for the 21st century New York City experience. It will truly belong to everyone... New Yorkers and to people all around the world as well.

That's true. Everyone who visits and is willing will have their own personal experience climbing the Vessel. It will make for more memories than something you can just look at.
Sort of like the Brooklyn Bridge. Sure it's nice to see, but so much better to walk accross.

yeah, the fact that this is a active, year-round, free, public park amenity right in front of a new shopping mall and cultural center and the highline will ensure a strong, lasting profile for the vessel. it couldn't be in a better placement.
