Agreed. And all the 12-15 story buildings could have been 30-40 stories. All those capped heights make the entire area look like an over-planned hood with a NIMBY cherry on top.

I was hoping to get more out of the Mission Rock development, but that's pretty squat as well. Hopefully, they'll incorporate some unique design elements and materials and the buildings meet the ground well.

I was hoping they would allow high rise buildings to be built in Mission Bay. I guess not.

No--that's not going to happen, as has been much discussed here. It was established and settled years ago during the initial planning.

The Third St. garage is getting a facelift. Not amazing, imo, but definitely better than what's there now:

Origami? At least they could have done cranes.

What's the reason again they didn't do grass tracks on Third? Every time I see a photo I think "damn that's a lot of ugly concrete." Grass tracks in the median would have looked great and accentuated the feel of a blvd.

Maybe someone here has a better recollection than I do, but wasn't this originally supposed to have some decorative (solar?) panels and, for whatever reason, they were removed/never completely installed?

They were decorative glass panels on the north and east facades, but they were cracking and so they were removed lest they crash to the pavement below. There were years of negotiations over whether they would be replaced and who would pay for it.

There were solar panels on the south facade, but they too were removed a few years ago. Not entirely sure why.

block 6W news, groundbreaking slated for April.

think that will leave three housing parcels (all affordable) to be developed:

1) at the west end of Channel where the remnant of the warehouse was recently demolished (block 12)

2) on Third St and Mission Rock (block 4)

3) 'behind' the public safety building (on the east, or Terry Francois, end of the block, block 9)

This image posted above makes me think about all the criticism Willie Brown got for prioritizing the T-Third Muni Metro line over a Geary line. But now, whatever his reasons (and it was suggested he was mostly interested in embracing Bayview/Hunters Point closer to the rest of the city), with Mission Bay approaching build-out, it's looking more like he made the right decision.

Definitely. Though, I guess that'd be determined by the metric you use to define "right" — whether it's based on ridership, economic progress, or even civic I suppose.

on Terry Francois it looks like the utility poles got their tops lopped off and the wires lowered (edit: actually, looking at older pics, those lower wires were already there, so seems the upper ones were simply removed), and I think the streetlight poles on the west side of the street were new, but otherwise not much visible difference from a month or two ago

looking across Terry Francois from the Fibrogen building at 409 Illinois

the northern end of Illinois looking toward Chase Center. it still feels strange to me to experience this bit of Illinois as a framed street after so many years open on two sides (and pretty much open all around when I first moved to the area, with just some cement plant equipment on the west side)

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4860/...c402edb8_b.jpg

the view from between the buildings on Illinois has suddenly changed for them

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4861/...b4b26658_b.jpg

speaking of street changes, the other one in that area that intrigues me is the opening of 16th to Terry Francois. circulation and activity levels will be drastically changed.
