ER.....Probably the Hotel Cecil.

A lot of strange things have happened up on that roof. Just ask Elisa Lam about it.

I might be staying there later next month and maybe not. My sister thinks it not a good idea for me to stay at the Cecil. It looks very noirish

Funny you should post this now. In the past two months, I've gone ahead and unearthed practically everything there is to know about this building and its history. In fact, I'll be giving a free slideshow lecture about it tomorrow (Sunday) in downtown L.A.

A tidbit: one of the land's first owners was Mrs. Genevieve Paddleford, America's most notorious "international adventuress and love pirate" for nearly 40 years. Hers is quite a story.

Fascinating stuff!

I recently spent several months going through some 50,000+ photos from the USC Digital Archives* and the Los Angeles Public Library.

Many of the photographs have a romantic quality to them.
I always felt this was a 'noir' city, especially in the winter when the warm Santa Ana winds swept through the basin.

I lived on Hancock between Santa Monica Blvd. and Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood.
Amazingly, the small bungalow where I lived is still there.

Enough said:
Here are the photographs of Los Angeles.
I will continue posting them over the next several months.

Please feel free to ADD any old L.A. photos you might have.

Hi, Ethereal. While rereading your first post (which noirishers know by heart by now as we always get on the first page when we come on the thread), I wondered what is the address of your small bungalow and wanted to see it on Google Maps.

Very noirish before and after bighen. -nice job.

I finally found a postcard of Busch's Garden on Sunset. The owner's son was serial killer Henry Adolph Busch.

AlvaroLegido, my address was 935 1/2 Hancock Ave. West Hollywood. You'll see that there are three bungalows
and I lived in the rear of the first bungalow. (they were built in 1946)

A little more on the old Crenshaw Theatre here. Thought we'd also seen more pictures of it, but can't find them now....

So glad it's the weekend. I finally have a minute to catch up with the thread. So many gorgeous posts. Thank you.

Some odd bits tripped over on the net this week:

Ed Fuentes may have figured out why our downtown streets don't quite conform to the Laws of the Indies:

One of the Einar Petersen murals from the Rosslyn is up on eBay:

la.curbed has some previously-mentioned-on-the-thread hotel recommendations for CityBoyDoug, including the Ritz Milner, Hollywood Historic and Coral Sands:
http://la.curbed.com/archives/2013/0...00_a_night.php

And, finally, the Getty has acquired three sets of sequenced aerial pix from Lane Barden
The Linear City Portfolio
Viewed in sequence on Barden's site, they really do give one a new perspective
on favorite and familiar locations:

-earlier tonight I came across this interesting 1959 slide.

-trying to figure out the address, I searched under 'florists' in the 1956 city directory since the 'plants' sign is prominent. Eventually I found a Germain's...but as a pet shop at 625 S. Hill Street. I looked at the slide again and decided the window display does look a bit like a pet shop.

http://imageshack.com/scaled/large/96/sjbz.jpgGoogle Street View

It looks like the building housing Germains has been replaced by another monstrosity. But you have the right address for Germains. To be certain, I found some detailing on the side windows of the building next door, which still stands, minus the earlier fire escape. The matching areas are circled in red.

...then I noticed 'Snafu Coffee Shop' several lines below Germain's in the directory and remembered this photograph I posted here last week.

At first I thought the 'Transocean Air Lines' office was the old 'Germains Pet Shop' space. -but the addresses don't seem to add up.
Now (after a few beers) I am completely c o n f u s e d!

I was dumbfounded to see that the old Snafu building is still with us. I had assumed the old photo showed it during demolition, but it is definitely the same place. The two small buildings were simply remodeled into one storefront. For proof, look at the top left edge of the roof, and how it aligns with the brickwork on its neighbor. Identical in both shots.

This was done from atop the Biltmore - and skipping over trees of Pershing Square there is the Hill St. Boos Bros. and a portion of the Metropolitan/Paramount Theater building to the cafeteria's right side--

It was opposite the Paramount Lot (on the same side of the street as Lucy's but further east). Presumed the theater was then being used by an acting troupe. It had a viable concession stand. Could it have gone by a different name, or no advertised name (for private screenings)? I distinctly remember it being nondescript brown and assumed it had been around for several years, if not decades. Still, I see no listing for a theater in the '62 or '73 directories, nor do I see any mention of a theater near this location in any of the usual source sites, e.g., cinema treasures. This is not to be confused with what was once known as Jensen's Melrose Theater at 4315 Melrose Ave. http://cinematreasures.org/theaters/2143

I guess it keeps their minds off of the crappy lives they lead in communist countries.

Thanks for the follow-up. The Encore Theater appears in the '73 directory at 5308 Melrose . . . XXX--3545. According to Cinema treasures, it started out in the '40s as the "Melvan" and later became a TV sound stage and warehouse before being revamped and renamed the Encore (1963), before another rechristening as the Continental ('80s) and ending up as a place exclusive for the parking of cars.
