NEMA (OGP) Above the Clouds - NOAA GLERL Webcam

Not saying such event has not happened in the past, but this morning (06:30 CDT) is the first time I have caught an image of a south loop building clearly visible above the clouds (marine layer), as seen from the NOAA GLERL webcam.

http://www.phisicalpsience.com/publi..._29may2019.jpg

An image about an hour later (07:40 CDT), most of the water vapor (clouds) having dissipated, suggest that if a person wishes to stay (live) in NEMA (OGP) and remain above the majority of the ground hugging, air pollution gases and suspended particles (Reddish Brown: Nitrogen Dioxide [NO2], Light Grey: Ozone [O3], Dark Grey: Carbon Soot,...) during a marginal air quality day, along with a buffer zone, needs to be about 650' ft (~198m) or higher, the pollution cap being around 600' ft (~183m). For scale, the height of the roof at Essex on the Park is 620' ft (~189m)[1].

Images collected from: NOAA GLERL (Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory) Chicago, View #2 https://www.glerl.noaa.gov/metdata/chi/chi2.jpg, 06:32 and 07:45 CDT, 29 May 2019

pilsenarch May 29, 2019 10:18 PM

anyone have any idea what the large triangular fabric 'sails' are for near the top of the building?

cozy May 30, 2019 1:23 AM

^ seconded. been wondering myself

trvlr70 Jun 4, 2019 7:23 PM

So, with the apparent strength of the city's apartment market, what do you think the chances are for the larger tower next door? It would be amazing to have that tower under construction.

maru2501 Jun 4, 2019 8:26 PM

Bonobo constantly wandering the city shooting this building

RedCorsair87 Jun 4, 2019 8:30 PM

^If all the good news about Chicago and Illinois lately is to be believed, there is a very good chance this tower will be built. I think the biggest factor will be how soon can this tower be filled to a level that is satisfactory to investors so they second can begin.

When you're in love, you just know it :D

Joking aside, I do sometimes wish I could just walk/bike/drive around the city taking pictures as a job... alas an office is my ball and chain for now

so, is it just to catch falling equipment?

pilsenarch Jun 5, 2019 8:08 PM

^I don't think so... they must have spent a significant amount of $$ engineering and installing the two sails to withstand all of the wind up there... There is a part of me that is afraid that they might be semi-permanent... will somebody who contacts the sales team ask?

I just cannot get enough of looking at this building, it turned out so well. I love that glass. I've said before that I'm not a big fan of twin buildings, but I would definitely take another, taller NEMA. We've gotten some real gems this cycle.

donnie Jun 7, 2019 2:58 PM

Solo has never looked so good!

Is it me or is there trees on top of Somi without foliage?

homebucket Jun 7, 2019 5:00 PM

Beautiful tower!

trvlr70 Jun 7, 2019 6:06 PM

Now if we can just get the taller twin done next door!!!

I hate to push the envelope here, but is there any word on said twin tower??? :D

KWillChicago Jun 7, 2019 9:23 PM

Straight up a Chicago building. When that fourth building borders off grant park, whether it's a twin but at least taller, those shots are going to be epic. And hopefully we will get an even tower than the fourth in that dreadful jewel lot. As for the triangle sails, lets hope those get taken down. That goes for that tacky NEMA sign on the lower half. Sobebody rent those floors so they are taken down.

BonoboZill4 Jun 8, 2019 5:08 PM

It's a building not a boat, I don't know why anyone is concerned about the netting...

Agreed with everyone though. If 1000M and this tower's adjacent lot also get their 800+ foot towers, the south end will be fast approaching LSE levels of height

less concerned, more curious! of course its to prevent debris from falling but it's in such a unique position

Now that I'm seeing it mostly finished up, I'm glad the top is enclosed. I was really into the "cube" at the top, but it feels complete with the cladding, and it enables it to have a kind of infinite ascension thing happening (which the open top would have disabled). Not to mention that the cube would probably have started to look hokey after the initial novelty wore off.

gebs Jun 24, 2019 2:52 PM

I like the diaphanous shadow that Vista is casting on the Aon tower in that last shot.
