If we're going to have a second casino, I don't think there's any better place for it (aside from building an actual unique experience by putting it on the SS United States along with a museum and hotel to make a truly unique experience that people would seek out).

Are they still looking to build that ugly gold crap? I know we're not going to get a masterpiece and it could be worse, but hoping there could be an improvement on what's been proposed.

Agreed, I say we build out the stadium area to be an entire 'entertainment complex', XFinity Live was a good addition...add the casino in and a few more structures containing some bars, remove some parking lots and replace them with parking garages and we should be good to go. I was in Pittsburgh last year and they have built out the area around their stadiums to be a bumping party after a game...that's what we should be aiming for.

Also, the current proposal looks like 1980's Miami. Not a fan.

That would be a damn shame if the SS United States got scrapped. And look at the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA. That got reused as a hotel. I don't see why we couldn't make a similar attraction in Philly.

Because it would cost a fortune.

I will be surprised if this gets built - especially now that they've opened up gambling at airports and truck stops in their infinite wisdom. I was at Atlantic City recently and the place is a ghost town. PA gambling oversaturated the NJ market and now it's oversaturating the PA market. 4 casinos within 20 minutes of Center City is enough, isn't it?

I like to see it happen despite the over-saturation. Like any kind of other businesses, only the fit will survive. If Live offers a great mix of gambling and adult entertainment (like bringing in small venue concerts, other entertainment program, whatnot), and a higher class feel, I'm all for it. The current casinos around the area are like slots parlor. Nothing to write home about. If they make this like the National MGM in the DC area or a resemblance to it, it will have a chance to survive and thrive.

Although apartment supply seems to be peaking, they should eventually put some housing around here. You are seeing apartments for young people spring up around baseball stadiums throughout the country and they are selling well. D.C., Atlanta, Chicago has always had it. D.C. is a bit off the beaten track and prime D.C. neighborhoods, but it's still doing well.

agree lining pattison ave to block the parking lots would do wonders and around in in front of CBP - would really change the street feel and offer almost surbanish apts with BSL access, something different for Philly

I completely agree. In order to survive in what is obviously an over-saturated market, this casino will have to specialize in something. There is probably a niche market out there that none of the area casinos have been able to target yet. If Live! can find an area of the market to specialize in, then it can position itself to attract those market segments and remain profitable (especially if those segments are willing to spend more for the experience).

That section of South Philly could easily be a world-class entertainment district. I can easily envision Pattison Avenue lined with mixed-use residential/retail/entertainment buildings, a large hotel at the southeastern and/or northeastern corner of Broad and Pattison, and implemented traffic-calming measures that will make the area safer for pedestrians and cyclists. Combine this with the fact that the area has 24/7 access to Center City and it becomes easy to see this place as an entertainment district.

Also, I can see the part of the Navy Yard closest to South Broad developed to the tune of being our version of Baltimore's Inner Harbor.

Why not make the Sports Museum part of the casino?

This. Atlantic City is desperate, and it needs to reinvent itself now, and everyone else isn't making it any easier. Plus, look at what happened when the AC casino market was oversaturated. There are already too many casinos in the area, we don't need any more.

Also, it's stupid that it's illegal to bet on sports in New Jersey. They should have made that legal when places like Bally's and the Trump Taj Mahal were coming up.


I can see this. The area east of the Sports Complex is mostly old industrial buildings that really do look bad. Even the building across from the Linc looks like it could go. And with the Navy Yard as an up-and-coming area, this could too become popular.

Although personally, I wish the Phils had built on Spring Garden like they wanted to and the Linc had 10,000 more seats, but that's neither here nor there.
