Ah, I knew I'd find something noirish connected with 222 Brook alias 222 S. Toluca if I searched long enough:

ProQuest via CSULB Library

222 1/2 must be the little shack--a real estate agent would probably call it a cozy love nest--on the property. (To make less of a gerrymander, I've rearranged the article.) The red arrow indicates the pertinent section.

Unidentified House

This photo was taken in 1936. We've seen similar houses -- maybe even this one -- but I don't recognize it and
couldn't find it. I've enlarged the photo:

This is another 1936 photo of the same house, which might be in the Hancock Park area, but that's just a guess:

Here is an enlarged view of the last photo. I think the address on the tree is "520." Can anyone ID the house?

I don't believe we've seen this photo before, interior of Ciro's, November 1947. On stage are Kay Thompson and The Williams Brothers performing their popular nightclub act. Of the two brothers facing us that's Andy closest to the camera.

Among the ringsiders I can spot Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli directly in front of Kay. To Judy's right (from our perspective) I believe that's Don DeFore. Garland served as matron of honor to DeFore's wife (singer Marion Holmes, I think that's her seated opposite Don) at their 1942 wedding, so this may have been a joint night out for the Minnellis and DeFores. Kay Thompson was Garland's vocal coach at MGM.

Andy Williams and Kay had a long running affair, despite a 20 year age difference. Kay went on to author the "Eloise" children's books, about the little girl who lives at the Plaza Hotel. She moved in with her goddaughter Liza Minnelli in her final years, dying at Minnelli's NYC penthouse in 1998, age 88.

For those curious as to the Thompson/Williams Bros act here's a 1951 television performance:

The gentleman in the striped tie seated ringside (to the left of the Minneli's) might be actor Jeffrey Lynn.

Something different from Julius Shulman today - a catering truck. This is "Job 4625: Cliff's Java Man Catering truck, 1970". NB. I've picked three of the six images in this set.

Does anyone recognize the building with the bells?

Still not feeling hungry? Maybe this'll change your mind :).

All from Getty Research Institute

There's no location given with the Shulman pictures, but I found this image of Cliff's Java Man Catering and Cafe at 228 W Garvey Avenue in Monterey Park. The photo is undated, but it looks to be around the same era as the pictures above. The church is still standing, but the cafe building has made way for a branch of the East West Bank.

A few other celebrities sighted at Bette's Doggie Party -- Henry Willcoxen, Wallace Ford and I believe that's Macdonald Carey blowing up the balloon (or possibly submitting to a breathalizer test).

Although now I'm thinking 1938 might have been too early for Carey to be in Hollywood.

Blaster Aug 17, 2016 12:55 AM

The balloon blower may actually be Jimmy Stewart who had a romance with Norma Shearer a few years after the death of Irving Thalberg!

Claire James; a Hollywood story

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...921/smA2Il.png
Claire James, 1940's IMDB

In 1986, the strange oddyssey of beauty queen and WW2-era starlet Claire James came to an end in her decrepit 3,000 square foot home at 1287 Ozeta Terrace in West Hollywood, a house her parents had bought in 1938 when the James family first moved to Los Angeles from Minneapolis. The house was described at the time as having an expansive lawn and "views to Catalina."

Also in 1938, Claire was "Miss California" at the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City. A reporter wrote that "the crowd goes wild in a frenzy of whistling and stomping" every time Claire makes an appearance on stage, but she got second-place, causing a disgusted Earl Carroll, nightclub impresario, to unofficially crown her the following night as the "rightful" winner. She lands an MGM contract and in 1942 marries director Busby Berkeley, but has the marriage annulled within a year. Claire marries three more times during the 1940's and early 1950's, each stormy union lasting from a few months to two years, and in between, Claire dates frequently and appears in minor roles in mostly B movies. In the midst of divorcing her last husband in 1951, she has a son, Blake. Claire's last signifigant movie role was as one of several dime-a-dance girls in the campy "The Revolt of Mamie Stover" with Jane Russell in 1956.

Claire had an equally beautiful sister, Diana, described as a "sadistic monster," a "speed freak," and a "compulsive Beverly Hills cat burglar." Diana married and divorced a cross-dressing race car driver who later becomes a biological female.
This dysfunctional family is described by Claire's niece, Catherine James, a Rock groupie, in her 2007 memoir "Dandelion." Catherine escaped her mother's vicious abuse at age 11 and ended up in an orphanage. Meanwhile, Claire and her adult son Blake share a bedroom at the house on Ozeta Terrace. The other bedrooms are used as storage closets for Claire's "amazing, silky wardrobe." A book reviewer described Blake as "an alcoholic mama's boy." According to the author of "Glamour Girls of the Silver Screen," "the house and the old Cadillacs in the garage slowly rot, and the curtains are always drawn."

Here is Catherine James' (Claire's niece) Official Website: http://www.cate11.com/page/page/4584998.htm

Claire James died of Cirrhosis of the liver at age 65 in 1986. Her son Blake spent much of his inherited money on drugs. On September 2, 1987, he and the girl who is driving his car are too wasted on drugs to notice a stopped panel truck and plow into it at 60 MPH, killing Blake upon impact. Soon after, Claire's brother, Robert James, has two 40-foot dumpsters delivered to Ozeta Terrace and throws everything out. Later, actor Julian Sands (the hunky blonde in "Room With a View") buys the house, which today is worth three million dollars.

Here is a youtube look at Claire in the 1942 movie "Orchestra Wives" at 1:53

Good call on Oleg Cassini. Not sure about Janet Gaynor. If I'm right about Jeffrey Lynn (and I could be dead wrong), then one of the ladies at the table is likely to be his wife at the time, Robin Chandler. She later divorced Lynn and married an heir to the American Tobacco fortune. As Robin Chandler Duke, she became a prominent socialite and the US Ambassador to Norway.

I believe the 'Blow Inn' might have been located in this rather interesting building with rounded corners and windows. (there's a small balcony hidden by the tree)

So I'm thinking 912 would have been in the smaller space beneath the balcony.

I have no explanation why the building is now numbered 913 . Do even and odd numbers ever switch sides of the street?

The Detrick-Joslyn Co appears at 110 N Alameda Street in the CDs of 1927, 1928 and 1929. The numbers 110 and 120 appear either side of the entrance.

The building was on the corner of Banning Street. The demo permit is dated 1989. The area is now a parking lot with the Metro Gold Line's Little Tokyo/Arts District Station roughly where the front used to be. Banning Street now ends at N Vignes Street. I'll see if I can find the building in any other pictures.

Thanks to GW and odinthor for the follow-ups on the Mission San Gabriel. I knew it was a building I should recognize, but my mind went blank. Looking at GSV, I see the road where the catering truck was parked is now a pedestrianized walkway.

Following the precedent set by buildings like the Wiltern Theatre and Picworth Market, today's Julius Shulman subject takes its name from the intersection where it stands. In this case it's the corner of Roxbury Drive and Santa Monica Boulevard. This is "Job 3889: Rox-San Building (Beverly Hills, Calif.), 1965".

This slightly different angle shows the entrance to the parking garage and the buildings beyond. On the first floor is H Hentz & Co, Members [of the] New York Stock Exchange.

The building has been reclad in places, the upper area has been closed in, and the row of plants several floors up has gone, but it's still recognizable.
