Not to diminish the significance of a centennial celebration, but there is something to be said about the same location's "Hopperesque" simplicity in 1910. Notice the stylish street lights that obviously did not last too long.

Prologue: I hope all my Hollywood Canteen posts haven't become too tedious for anyone.

This is Lawrence Eugene Whitmire. He was called Gene. He was born on January 16, 1926 and
is today 90 years old. That means in the following photo, taken in 1943, he is 17 years old!

I wanted to post this exterior because it's the only photo I've seen where there is some
landscaping (greenery) in the front area.


The following photo was captioned: "Gene (left) with fellow crew member waiting for a show at
the Hollywood Canteen in 1943." If they're waiting, I'm not sure of their location, if it indeed
was around the canteen, it doesn't look familiar. But, neither did the greenery in the first one!

This is a photo at the Hollywood Canteen with several people checking out the Hollywood Hall of Honor, which
were those in the entertainment industry in the armed services. It's dated 1944. Six of the seven people
pictured are named: Director Mervyn LeRoy, pointing, Bette Davis, Jane Wyman, Marlene Dietrich, Bob Hope
and Joan Leslie. Who in the group is not named?

If anyone wants to, I'd like see if we can name the people on the Hollywood Hall of Honor.

As you say, photos have been rearranged and there are other differences of angle etc. in the various shots that make it hard (for me) to follow your numbering system, but here are some of the names (in addition to those I've added to your list above), starting with the 3rd row. Most of these I'm pretty sure of, I'll indicate when not positive.

One of the photos that changes position and is of a man in a white navy uniform & he's looking up & is below Ronald Reagan in the Bunny Waters picture...that's probably actor Richard Ney (husband of Greer Garson), although there is some resemblance to Peter Lawford.

The unidentified woman in the top photo between Joan Leslie and Bette Davis is Patricia Morrison, who I think is still alive, age 101 & last I heard lived at Park LaBrea..

The John Milner building that housed The Congress Bar/Cafe was at 419 S Main Street. I think the date on the front says 1895, although it could be 1885. I found this reference to the Congress Cafe in the February 22, 1909 edition of the Los Angeles Herald:

At 1:30 o'clock this morning the Congress cafe, formerly the Old Heidelberg cafe, 419 South Main street, closed its doors. Another result of The Herald's crusade against protected vice.

I couldn't find the Old Heidelberg Cafe in the CDs either, but I'd say that HDL's date could be about two decades out.

I don't believe he's physically deformed. I think he's trying to avoid being in the way of all the photographers across the street.

Some pertinent data:

--The pic shows a sidewalk at left. At least as of December 28, 1892, Winston had not been sidewalked: "Ordinances of intention to sidewalk portions of Los Angeles, Winston, Franklin and Second streets coming up on postponement, were referred to the incoming [City] Council" (LA Times 12/28/1892).

--Adjoining the sidewalk referred to above, I see a curb. From the LA Times of June 27, 1899: "The City Engineer presented the following ordinances for street work, all of which were adopted under suspension of the rules: [...] ordinance of intention to [...] construct a cement curb along each side of Winston street, from the first alley east of Los Angeles street, to San Pedro street."

--Is there any evidence in the pic of "an overhead feed wire"? From the LA Times of October 23, 1900: "The attempt to string an overhead feed wire on Main street from Sixth to Winston street, and from there to the power-house of the Edison Electric Company has been a fruitful source of trouble. The workmen who were placing the wire on the superstructure were arrested twice last week at the instigation of the striking electric linemen and the end is not yet" [sic].

The men's clothing fashion looks ca. 1910-1920 or so to me (having a big pipe is always haute couture). We see, at the right, a lady walking away from us; the look of her clothing and hat bespeak ca. 1895-1915.

All things considered, I'm thinking this pic is about 1910. At least, that's what I'm thinking until probably a second after posting . . .

--Jeff, I wasn't quite sure which photograph you had pointed out for Glenn Ford.

--I have a feeling that a couple so-far unnamed photos are directors. Could one be George Stevens?

--I had to look up "Shepperd Strudwick." Really long career in film and television, including the Best Picture winner "All the King's Men" and the great "A Place in the Sun." Also in "The Reckless Moment," a film I probably saw because I looked for it when the remake, titled "The Deep End," came out.

That made me laugh! :)

A lot of cars in L.A. look like that now, and in the past couple years, because of the drought!

To my eyes the date looks like 1895. The dress also looks a little later than that (consistent with civilian attire associated with the Spanish Am War 1898), but I am guessing styles were slow to change, even in the big city.

It would be interesting to know the composition of the conduit/street plumbing. It does not appear to be threaded. Curiously, there appear to be many layers of conduit, making detection and repair of a short at the bottom of the heap extra-labor intensive. It is presumed that the conduit pictured was for electrification, although those gasometers and water mains of the day clearly supplied product in forms other than bottles or other containers. Also unclear whether some of the utilities shared the same trenches and poles. Odinthor's quote suggests some utilities were independently minded caring more for their own interests as opposed to others. :no:
