Lmaoo...I don't think there's another major city that has as many vacant lots as Chicago especially on the south/west sides. Detroit maybe? But I'm talking major major cities...maybe Philly?

This is why I get pissed off when developers tear down good standing buildings just to build something identical or worse in the same lot, this is happening alot in bronzeville. Like bruh, there's miles and miles of vacant lots to build on, why the hell are you tearing down our city's architecture just for your project? SMH

I do agree with the general point that historic architecture should be preserved and not be torn down indiscriminately.

The University claims that some of those apartment buildings it bought were in much worse shape than the owners alleged. As I recall the University claimed some of the buildings had beams in the basement that were at risk of collapse, since they 100+ years old and poorly maintained by the owner.
Every one of these old buildings has "beams in the basement that put it at risk of collapse", but when's the last time you saw one collapse?

Never, because they aren't actually at risk of collapse. These buildings all sit on old heavy timber beams that are inevitably out of code by modern standards. The city inspectors force you to replace them with steel any time you renovate.

This is a bullshit excuse by UofC. Basically they are saying: "this is an old building and is obviously out of code".

The issue for the hospital is all the buildings need to be connected indoors so that patients can be transported between buildings. Since UC hospital has parks on 2 sides and an expanding campus on one, the only alternative would be going higher on existing buildings.

I mean, they can either expand outside their boundaries and sprawl all over the neighborhood, or they can stay contained but build upwards. The hospital especially has to stay centralized (they can't call an ambulance every time a patient needs to visit a different department) and the hospital is walled in by Washington Park, the Midway, and the academic campus. I believe they are planning for future growth by upsizing the foundations on their new buildings to allow vertical expansion.

What's the deal with the Study Hotel? Is it open? I don't really see any reviews or pictures online after the opening, if that has happened...

Thanks for the pictures. I hope someone will post some of the Study Hotel. One thing about that high bay building.... in the master plan from 2013, that land was reserved for an extension of the parking garage. And now they are adding the cancer hospital right across the street, so I am surprised they decided they wouldn't need more parking. There was other land right around there they could have put the high bay building on. I'm sure there is a method to their madness...just not sure what it is. I'm not the biggest fan or endless parking garages but the need is a reality for a busy, dense campus...

This building is intense. There's a lot of design work going on in here from multiple fields. Cool to see these.

The impending demolition of Accelerator meant that there would be no high bay space to build experiments in, which some of us desperately need :). (As a future user of the high bay I've gotten a few tours...).

I didn't see the online event, so I am not sure. I thought they (previously) said something about filing official plans with the state this fall. So maybe fairly soon.
