I believe that intersection in the middle top of the photo is where Sunset, La Cienega and Miller Drive all intersect on the Sunset Strip.

Great photos, I really like the ones of the CBS building on Sunset. That building is now vacant, and has been for the past few years. I'm not sure what's planned for it, I'm hoping it won't be demolished.

I. N. Van Nuys house, SW corner of Spring and 7th, ca. 1902. Has Mrs. Van Nuys (on the porch) just connived with her lover (in the horseless carriage, leaving after a nooner) to bump off Mr. Van Nuys? "Straight down the line...."

As far as I know, the most recent plan for Columbia Square, from the people who own the land, is to develop hotels, condos, and office space around it.

Looks like you can see Barnsdall Art Park (may have still been known as "Olive Hill" then) in the background; is this the side facing Hollywood blvd? It kind of looks like where the gates/parking lot are now. If that's correct, then the building in the photo isn't there anymore, but the foundations still are. The Hollyhock House still stands (and has been restored; they regularly give tours of it).

Imagine that; a hill in Los Angeles (East Hollywood) that was allowed to remain standing!

on second thought; we may be seeing the back of the guest house here (which is still there), and that would place this photo a tiny bit farther north; almost in what's now the rite-aid parking lot.

When I lived in L.A., I was seldom in that area (east Hollywood).
One of the things I regret, is not taking the time to tour the Hollyhock House.

Walking around downtown LA, you can still see the names of old buildings in brass on the sidewalks here and there...

Famous Arizona trunk murderess Winnie Ruth Judd--always
one of my favorite cases. I'd forgotten that L.A. figured into
the story. After dispatching two friends with whom she was
fighting (supposedly over a man), she packed up their remains
and left Phoenix for Los Angeles. Sharp-eyed (and -nosed)
baggage handlers in L.A. called the police, but La Judd took
off and was at large for a week before being arrested at (not
sure why) the Alvarez & Moore Funeral Chapel on Court
Street. She was extradited to Phoenix, where she stood
trial and was found guilty. The rest of her story is very
interesting--check it out.
