yeah, the were going for a grant or they won some money which would have closed down and improved pierce. It included some really nice improvements on top of the small ones they recently made with the additional shade structures.

The restaurant under construction on the corner of Adams Street and First Avenue finally has an identity... Thai Basil! Owners Norman and Patrida Fite plan to open for business in about three weeks. Welcome!

I've been wondering about Thai Basil opening so close to Thai Elephant. Seems odd they would want to be that close to competition, not to mention so many people wouldn't know the difference between Thai and Vietnamese.

Hispanic artists aim to turn 16th Street corridor into wonderland of color

by Emily Gersema - Apr. 21, 2011 01:09 PM
The Arizona Republic

A mural painted on the side of Barrio Café in Phoenix is just the beginning for Calle 16 - a 16th Street mural organization that began in August.

Silvana Salcido Esparza, who owns the Mexican restaurant at 2814 N. 16th St., south of Thomas Road, said the mural is a blend of Mexican symbols of the Mayan and Hispanic cultures. It is one of many murals the organization intends to paint.

Last year, Salcido had commissioned the mural, "Bienvenidos a Arizona," by Gennaro Garcia. As she sat drinking a glass of wine and studying the mural, she began to think about Arizona's immigration law, Senate Bill 1070.

The law instructed law-enforcement officers making routine legal stops to check immigration status when there was reasonable suspicion the person stopped was in the country illegally. A federal judge last summer disabled many portions of the law, but public outrage, particularly among Phoenix's Hispanic residents, lingered.

Salcido decided the Hispanic community could channel its anger into positive activities. But it would need to work together.

Garcia created the design for the mural with Salcido's input, and he had help painting it. Dozens of children in the area made their mark, spraying and brushing paint onto the wall.

Salcido, Garcia and another artist, Hugo Medina, agreed that painting murals on 16th Street buildings, with help from the community, could be beneficial. Youth could learn from the artists, the effort would beautify the neighborhood, and the murals could express community pride.

"Sometimes when there's anger, it comes out misconstrued," Salcido said. "And we're redirecting it."

The effort is clearly grass-roots.

Salcido said the group is seeking official non-profit status through a federal application. Once it is received, the group can begin to raise money to cover the cost of supplies for murals.

Garcia estimated 30 artists are ready to paint as soon as the group is declared a non-profit.

"So many people are donating art to raise money to make the murals," Garcia said. "It is just the beginning."

Medina said he is working on a mural in the alley behind the café and more walls in the alley could be covered over the next few years.

The group has been talking with business owners for approval to paint their walls with murals.

"We want to turn that into 'Mural Alley' and just cover it with artwork," Medina said.

Medina added that there are some parameters for the artists who participate in Calle 16.

"They're allowed to have their vision," he said. "But, at the same time, they must do something cultural, educational and positive."

This seems like a nice project, it'll be cool if in the long run 16th street ends up with a more definably identity.

Still it seems the best thing for 16th would be the elimination of the turn lane and using that width (approx 12 feet) to add bike lanes and planter strips on each side of the road. There's very little shade along 16th for most stretches and currently in many spots there's just no room for street trees.

Does anyone know what is going up on the north side of McDowell at about 13th Avenue? The area is fenced off and it looks like work is being done. Those lots have been empty for years now - it's my understanding that developers bought them in the heydays of the 2000s but then the financial meltdown hit and nothing happened.

So noticed this really cool blue light strip around the 120 E van buren building (the data center place). Anyone have any idea what kind of plans they have for the building?

I'm pretty sure they are run by the same people. So it is more like expansion than competition.

Stuck my nose into the space just north of the new medical clinic on Central that used to be a Quiznos. It is open and there were people inside making plans for a new restaurant. The owner said they weren't sure what kind yet, but they think probably a Thai place. I mentioned that it seemed Thai was really coming downtown with a third Thai place. Thai or whatever, looks like a new restaurant is coming.

Vicelord John Apr 25, 2011 4:35 AM

Hmmm. You know that quiznos was on the corner right? The space north was some other restaurant.

gymratmanaz Apr 25, 2011 12:27 PM

yup. That's the place.

I don't think anything is going on at 13th and McDowell. It looked like they were just using it for staging, but I could be wrong.

There was an apartment complex there that was torn down in order to build townhouses. It was quite controversial among the Encanto_palmcroft folks at the time (2007). It presumably got stalled with the rest of the economy.

Thanks for the info. I wish the proposed building would have gone in. We'll probably end up with another strip mall or gas station now.

Taken with my 1.5 year old camera phone - sorry the quality is sub-par.

LOL! $900K condos on McDowell. The developers were smoking something strong back then. What a difference four years makes.

Yes, please sell me a $900k condo that is across the street from a check-cashing place and catty-corner from a Circle K frequented by crackheads.

I looked again last evening. Still looks like staging more than actual work occurring on the site. When work does happen, you will know because all the residents of Palmcroft will start squawking.

PHX31 Apr 26, 2011 6:21 PM

Yeah, they probably just leased out the land to someone to stage their construction equipment for some other project.

Haven't really been active on the forum for a while now, but just know I still read this on a daily with the same love as you guys.

Found this when doing my daily news runs on the net. I think the statues might be a bit wild but will still add some much needed character to our developing copper square. Hopefully they are not just in place temporarily for the game.

In late May, you might spot a few painted, logo-plastered cactus statues in popular spots around Downtown.

Major League Baseball representatives say 10, 7-foot-tall, 700-pound statues will be placed in Phoenix as part of the celebrations for the All-Star Game at Chase Field on July 12.

Think Cow Parade (the international public art campaign with artist-painted cows in various cities) but less arty, and more corporate.

The statues, designed by licensee Forever Collectibles, will feature logos and graphics of each of the 30 MLB teams and important moments in Arizona Diamondback history. (Quick note to MLB: probably better not to use "erected across downtown Phoenix" when talking about cactus art.)

Miniatures will be on sale at the MLB All-Star FanFest, at the Phoenix Convention Center from July 8 through 12.
