That's a strange coincidence that you should post a picture of Pola Negri - I found a postcard of one of her houses at the end of last week. When I went looking for more info, I came across a few more postcards. I'm not sure of the order in which she resided in these homes, but here's the first one I found. So far I haven't located a more precise address than Hollywood.

The second is a colonial style house. According to allanellenberger.com, Pola lived in this house during her relationship with Rudolph Valentino in 1925-1926. One of Pola's mini biographies on IMDb.com says "Pola made a spectacle of herself when she threw herself on the late Rudolph Valentino's coffin". There's more info about the house at that link, including the address at 621 North Beverly Boulevard, Beverly Hills. The house is still standing.

That page at allanellenberger.com also has a slightly smaller version of the picture below, which they identify as the backyard of the house above in the 1920s.

As per the description, this is the garden of her home in Beverly Hills. It could be the house above, or it could be the one below.

This is her other home that's listed as Beverly Hills. The Ebay seller posted the reverse of the postcard, but it only contained the publisher's name, so there's no address or date.

Well, HossC, there is much confusion about Pola Negri's Colonial house... it was actually built by silent star Priscilla Dean and her husband actor Wheeler Oakman in 1922 and attributed to architects Walker & Eisen (Oviatt and Fine Arts buildings, Beverly-Wilshire, Hotel Normandie). According to a 1986 California Historic Resources inventory, it was at 610 North Beverly Drive, BH. Oakman & Dean sold it to Pola, who sold it to "well-known philanthropist" Max Strauss. Next was Hal Roach, who was moving from Berkeley Square: http://www.berkeleysquarelosangeles....ach-house.html

610 N Beverly was demolished and there is a different house on the site now. The house across and up the street at 621 is cited in some places on the web as the Oakman-Dean/Negri/Roach house—it has similar columns, as did the one once at 610. But it isn't Pola's house.

I know we have touched base with Phil Spector here and there, but have we looked at his house....KCET has a great article about how it came about with a few old pictures.

I don't want to shatter your illusions, but there's some interior pictures at http://hookedonhouses.net. There's a link on that page to an article on curbed.com where you'll find more interior pictures. Sadly, none of them show the hidden passageways mentioned in the KCET article - I wonder if they still exist.

It's actually a lot more common than you'd think. This example is on the NW corner of Broadway and 4th.

More on the Grant Building:

The photo could possibly be from 4th Street. The second photo I posted below was labeled "north on Broadway from 4th Street"
and yet the second photo was taken on the same block (albeit the middle of the block)

Notice the odd shape on top of the large building down the block. Can you tell what it is?

It's a GIANT woman's shoe!!

Another interesting detail is the banner across the street. The banner reads "VOTE FOR OWENS RIVER JUNE 12"
(it's hard to read the banner in the photo, but it was mentioned in the description of the photo at USC Archive)

This must be the vote on whether or not to issue BONDS for the Los Angeles Aqueduct!

So I went looking for the Grant Building, and I was reminded of the now low-rise character of the Broadway
streetscape between 3rd and 4th. Much of it seems to be taxpayers, at least for the moment, anyway. At
first, the Grant appeared to be gone along with the shoe. But... the curve... eight windows on the 4th
Street side, five along Broadway... it looks as though that it might not be gone entirely:

Realize that since I've advanced only to the upper 80s/lower 90s pages of this thread, anything I post risks being a repeat…

What interests me about the Grant Building (glad to know the name) is a bit of advertising in the trim above the first floor:

http://i1169.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2fd5fe9d.jpg

I see "NATURAL FOO…". Given my best Wheel of Fortune skills and the available space for the remainder of the word, my guess would be "NATURAL FOOD". By itself it's a curiosity, but combine that with the country's first vegetarian cafeteria at 3rd and Hill, and it makes me wonder if L.A. was already a hotbed of foodie and granola types a hundred years ago.

Do you have a source for your statement that the Vegetarian Cafeteria was the first of its kind in the US? Some sources suggest New York may have been first. http://restaurant-ingthroughhistory....n-restaurants/

There is little dispute that some Los Angelinos embraced novel diets and unusual "health-promoting" lifestyles, and this certainly include celebrities connected with Hollywood. But the primary "granola" influence may have come from the likes of Cornflake King, John Kellogg (Battle Creek, MI), and C.W. Post of Grape-Nuts and Post Toasties fame. ;)
