An early remote vacuum cleaner that has somehow found its way onto the roof? |

Looks like skylight to me. Perhaps that extra large garage is underneath. |
The Phone Booth
I think we all love the phone booth. Funny how something so ubiquitous not so long ago is now so rare.
Maybe it served other purposes than just placing calls. A fast elevator-style drop to lower floors? You gotta imagine there were a fair number of Black-Ops Company Men who visited Lookout Mountain over the years. http://www.tvacres.com/images/props_booth.jpg Quote:

It's a bit odd that the phone booth is missing in the photo I posted from the late 70s/early 80s.

Car through house. Coronado Terrace in the Echo Park area 1951.
http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/317...arage1951a.jpg http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/search...=1328656364317 I don't think this guy is having a very good day. One question: Is that thing in the yard one of those citywide incinerators or a butt-ugly outdoor grill? |
If you look, the skylight isn't there either.
|
I hate getting out of place. What I meant was, in the 70's shot of the Lab, neither the phone booth nor the skylight are in that parking lot.
|
I hadn't noticed that kevinW. Thanks for pointing that out.

It's hard to tell from the 70s/80s shot, but it looks like a blue tarp on the ground where the skylight would be. |

Let me briefly return to the Alvarado Terrace area.
The First Church of Christ, Scientist built in 1912 anchors the southwestern end of Alvarado Terrace at Alvarado Street & Hoover Street. http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/5...hchristsci.jpg usc above: This view is from Hoover Street. Alvarado Street is on the left and Alvarado Terrace is on the right. below: The church is far left (labeled Seventh Day Adventist). http://img846.imageshack.us/img846/1...alaterrace.jpg google street view below: Here is a slightly different angle looking down Alvarado Terrace. The 'peaked' high-rise apartment building is visible down the street. http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/7...bldgdownal.jpg usc below: The 'peaked' high-rise apartment down Alvarado Terrace. http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/1388/jonespeaked.jpg google street view below: The First Church of Christ, Scientist viewed from Alvarado Terrace. This is an exceptionally beautiful building. http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/5...lvaradot2a.jpg google street view Now for the 'noirish' aspect of this post. In 1971 Jim Jones' People's Temple established urban congregations in San Francisco and Los Angeles. In Los Angeles the Jim Jones' People's Temple inhabited the First Church of Christ, Scientist on Alvarado Terrace from 1971 to 1977. The Los Angeles branch was the larger of the two. It's weekly offering was $15,000 to $25,000 compared to San Francisco's $8,000 to $12,000. Jim Jones preached here every two weeks. A line of buses filled with members and Jim Jones himself would drive down from the small headquarter church in Ukiah CA and the San Francisco church. below: A People's Temple convoy. http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/6...usesflickr.jpg http://www.flickr.com/photos/peoples...th/5508109305/ people's temple archive/flickr below: Leaving Ukiah CA. http://img851.imageshack.us/img851/5...sredwoodva.jpg http://www.flickr.com/photos/peoples...th/5508109305/ below: The interior of the People's Temple on Alvarado Terrace in 1971. http://img831.imageshack.us/img831/6938/stemple.jpg LAPL below: Many of the Los Angeles' Temple members lived in this apartment building on Alvarado Terrace. http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/7614/jonesapt1a1d.jpg google street view below: This view shows the close proximity of the apartment building to the church (far left). http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/7582/jonesapt1a1.jpg google street view http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/3153/jonesi1apt.jpg http://www.flickr.com/photos/peoplestemple/4801579243/ When the San Francisco church became the People's Temple headquarters (previously it was in tiny Ukiah CA) many of the Los Angeles members eventually moved to the San Francisco area. As we all know, the members of the People's Temple eventually committed mass suicide in Guyana in 1978. 918 members died, including 276 children after drinking cyanide laced grape kool-aid I've obviously skipped over many details. Here is a link to fill in the blanks. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peoples_Temple ____ |

Yep, I just found me a new neighborhood to explore! Missed this area utterly when I actually lived and worked in the area 14 years ago! How could I have done that?

The church on Alvarado Terrace is beautiful. I especially admire the photo of the interior. Is this interior still intact? It is very imposing.

OK..I don't want you to think I'm obsessed with Alvarado Terrace but I just wanted to point out these four interesting homes that surround
the old First Church of Christ, Scientist. below: I've placed arrows on the four homes. http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/2...doarrowsd4.jpg google street view Moving left to right. #1 1515 South Hoover Street built in 1905. http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/8...5shoovertr.jpg http://www.travelinlocal.com/alvarad...strict-part-4/ #2 1458 Alvarado Terrace.
