I was reading today that the Gilmore family still owns all the land under The Grove, which now occupies the drive-in sight. That must be a nice fat rent check every month!

A...drive-in? That's totally news to me! Also, where exactly is (was) that Olympic village? I don't recognize that view at all.

Great series of posts, FFF, I must say! You've been doing a lot of homework lately! (Fun homework, too, I'm sure.) ^^

Thanks Scott! Yeah, I have been finally posting a bunch of stuff I've gathered. There will be more but I need sleep now:D

:) I think I may have mentioned before that a 1950 Stude was almost my first car! I saw a cherry one for sale for only $700 in 1971. Had to settle for my dad's 1967 Mustang instead. Not much to complain about, as it turned out. ^^

Yep, I wouldn't complain about a 67 Mustang at all. That is my favorite year of Mustang!

When I was a kid in the early 60s, an elderly lady a few doors down from us had a showroom perfect '50 Studebaker that I was in love with. Midnight blue with gray interior AND lace doilies on the seat backs:D

We moved from that neighborhood when I was 14 and I have no idea what ever happened to that car....sigh!

Silent Locations!, thank you so much for posting this. absolutley an a amazing comparison! i love the turning point, and have posted previously some of Harold Lloyd's bunker hill shots!.. hot water is a film i have yet to see, but will definately track it down!!!!! this is great!....(did i forget to say thank you?) grazie mille!!!!!

Or this one, from 1937, soon before it was razed. Prior to this, I did not know that the block immediately north of the old Post Office was demolished before the P.O. itself (far right). Several historically important buildings are also visible on the east side of Main Street here. There's the Baker Block (1877) at far left. The telephone pole just left of center points directly to the almost impossibly old Bella Union Hotel. It was first constructed as a single-storey residence c.1835. In succession, it subsequently became the last capitol of Alta California, the county's first courthouse, and the city's first hotel. To the immediate left of the Bella Union is the Pico Building, built in 1868, two years before the Pico House. (Thanks to Brian Hsu's Urban Diachrony blog for that I.D.)

Thanks for posting that great photo of the Salt Box gsjansen! I recently came across this snapshot of the Castle from 1969 with the Salt Box peeking out on the side and the soon to be gone Richfield tower.
