MTA announces record ridership on Metro-North, LIRR ·
In what has seemingly become a regular rite of passage for the region’s commuter rail lines, the MTA yesterday announced record ridership on both Metro-North and the LIRR for 2015. Metro-North saw 86.1 million customers last year, and the LIRR carried 87.6 million customers, the highest total since 1949. Metro-North’s ridership has doubled since the agency came into being in 1983. The MTA believes that a mix of a younger ridership base that doesn’t want to drive (coupled with how miserable it is to drive into New York City) along with a strong regional economy has led to this higher ridership levels. more: http://www.secondavesagas.com/ |

Mayor de Blasio to Propose Streetcar Line Linking Brooklyn and Queens
Mayor de Blasio to Propose Streetcar Line Linking Brooklyn and Queens
By Michael Grynbaum NY Times Feb. 3, 2016 "In a major reimagining of the New York City waterfront, Mayor Bill de Blasio is set to propose a streetcar line that would snake along the East River in Brooklyn and Queens, a 16-mile scenic ride that would be his administration’s most ambitious urban engineering project to date. The plan, to be unveiled on Thursday in the mayor’s State of the City speech, calls for a line that runs aboveground on rails embedded in public roadways and flows alongside automobile traffic — a sleeker and nimbler version of San Francisco’s trolleys. By winding along the East River, the streetcars would vastly expand transportation access to a bustling stretch of the city that has undergone rapid development — from the industrial centers of Sunset Park, Brooklyn, to the upper reaches of Astoria, Queens — but remains relatively isolated from the subway..." http://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/04/ny...=top-news&_r=2 |
^ It's amazing to me that the MTA didn't think to do this between the Bedford Ave stop on the L train or a little further north into Greenpoint or near Mccarran Park, and to downtown Brooklyn right after they reviewed the Sandy damage to the L train tunnels and knew that they'd have to eventually be closed in some capacity for repairs. Something like what's proposed is needed even in a world where the L train tunnels aren't seriously crippled from a capacity perspective.

350 new bus countdown clocks, bus-only lanes coming to NYC
By Rebecca Harshbarger rebecca.harshbarger@amny.com February 3, 2016 Bus countdown clocks will be installed at 350 additional stops around the city, Mayor Bill de Blasio will announce on Thursday, as part of a larger strategy to speed up buses citywide, including new bus-only traffic lanes. The clocks utilize data from MTA’s BusTime system, which uses GPS to track where buses are. Riders at stops without them now have to use a cell phone to check how far away the bus is. The City Council allocated money for about 250 bus countdown clocks over the past two years, but only three countdown clocks have been installed so far on regular bus routes. There are also 29 clocks on select bus routes, where riders swipe their MetroCards before getting on. The leftover City Council money, combined with an infusion of cash from City Hall, will fund the 350 new clocks. Installation will begin immediately and wrap up next year. Additional clocks could also be funded. more: http://www.amny.com/transit/350-new-...nyc-1.11426683 |

The stations on the SAS are nothing too exciting compared to what modern cities build these days. The design is underwhelming and only marginally better than older stations. I suppose u can't expect the moon, it's NYC not Dubai or Stockholm, etc. Transit in the City is designed to be utilitarian and that's what it is, period.. The tiles are a bit old fashioned. I would have thought they would have gone for a more modern look given they have a fresh slate to work with. I'll end with something positive of course. The ceilings are nice and high.
