In any event, Bob's must have been a work in progress over its short history. Notice the pumps seem to change color (some photos have dark pumps - below they are white/light colored). In the repost below, the rear propellers have twin blades and it is possible the fronts also have twin blades; however, in the other shots, there are triple blade props. Another optical illusion, or does the phone booth appear to have a triangular footprint rather than the traditional square shape? And that gumball machine in front of the phone booth looks empty . . . :apple: http://www.gstatic.com/hostedimg/578e9ef9d81851a4_large |

It appears they turned them frequently as there seems to be an area below each prop (including the rearward propellers) restricted by a chain link fence so that paying customers may have the experience of the spinning propellers without losing their heads. |
The Fokker F32 really did have dual blades in the front and triple in the back. I think this link is better than pictures to describe its brief history.

:previous: Fascinating.
It may be a little off-topic, but the Fokker pictured was one of only 10 manufactured. It was the first four engine aircraft built in the US and the largest plane of its type at the time (1929) seating 32 passengers with sleeper berths. Western Air Express flew two such aircraft between LA and SF. Another local carrier, Trans Western Airlines "TWA" also flew the plane. "Bob's" is the only photo I have seen with triple blades in the front. In the other examples, they all seemed to sport twin blade propellers - forward and aft. If the same engines were used, it would seem counterintuitive but not impossible for a flying aircraft to have different propeller shapes and forms on different engines. Luggage label. (Should possibly read: "Fly with WAE - and buy your gas at Bob's!") :bowtie: http://i.ebayimg.com/t/1930-luggage-...ROQ~~60_57.JPGEbay May 1931, TWA flight lifts off from Burbank's United Airport. http://jpg3.lapl.org/pics40/00069796.jpglapl http://www.dutch-aviation.nl/picture...%20Express.jpghttp://www.dutch-aviation.nl/picture...%20Express.jpg 1937 http://jpg1.lapl.org/00097/00097200.jpglapl ___________________________ What the future may foretell? Was the Hall of Records meant to have an adjoining extension at a later date? a connecting high level bridge perhaps? Notice in this shot that the facade on the side has a rather plain utilitarian area on it, seems to be lacking any detail, especially in the area with the blocked in windows above the cornice that rings the middle of the building. The 4 large windows here are at odds to the others on that level, I notice that this is repeated at the other end of the building Or am I reading too much into it:sly: |

The city of WeHo was able to get the state to "dismiss" the Ellis Act on the building. That enabled the city to work with Jerome Nash (building owner) on future pans for the building. On 9/5, they entered into an agreement and issued a conditional use permit to him. He is absolutely required to replace all windows with the ones approved by the city (what started this whole brouhaha), but then he does have the option of using the building as an apartment house, condominium building (they would waive the minimum parking spaces requirement), or convert the building into a boutique hotel. Mr. Nash has 120 days from 9/5 to submit his final proposal. Bottom Line, The El Mirador has been saved from ruin or demolition! ~Jon Paul |

It doesn't really matter--it's a great shot whatever the year--but I think this is most likely a Christmas before 1959.... American would probably not have been advertising piston-powered DC7 service so prominently in 1962. AA inaugurated jet service on January 25, 1959, flying its new 707 from LAX to Idlewild/JFK. Here's the crew posing for a shot before takeoff on the inaugural: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-o...2520AM.bmp.jpg American Airlines 707 Jet Stewardess (nice blog) And here's a great shot of a 707 at LAX dated December 26, 1962 https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-c...2520AM.bmp.jpg jetphotos.net |
