I have paused several times looking at these photos. It may have something to do with the camera's shutter speed, but in the smaller photo, those props look as though they are moving fast enough to taxi the aircraft. I do not see any exhaust or evidence of an electric motor that might move the props as a long term attention grabber. The pennants strung above the lot may indicate that this was a grand opening or some other special event. Also, the way the rear door seems ajar and fitted with stairs (in some of the other shots) almost suggests the public was invited to hop aboard. Curious about the need for the chain link fence when so many other areas seem exposed. In one shot it seems that the fence might be there to prevent unwanted contact between the public and the propellers, but other shots suggest the propellers were there for the touching. The fenced in areas do not seem like the place for an office or cashier either. Safekeeping of wiper blades and tires? Notice also the building that seems next your favorite apartment building. Judging from the advertising, that building may have included service bays.

In any event, Bob's must have been a work in progress over its short history. Notice the pumps seem to change color (some photos have dark pumps - below they are white/light colored). In the repost below, the rear propellers have twin blades and it is possible the fronts also have twin blades; however, in the other shots, there are triple blade props. Another optical illusion, or does the phone booth appear to have a triangular footprint rather than the traditional square shape? And that gumball machine in front of the phone booth looks empty . . . :apple:

It appears they turned them frequently as there seems to be an area below each prop (including the rearward propellers) restricted by a chain link fence so that paying customers may have the experience of the spinning propellers without losing their heads.

The Fokker F32 really did have dual blades in the front and triple in the back. I think this link is better than pictures to describe its brief history.

Chuckaluck Sep 16, 2012 3:15 PM

:previous: Fascinating.

It may be a little off-topic, but the Fokker pictured was one of only 10 manufactured. It was the first four engine aircraft built in the US and the largest plane of its type at the time (1929) seating 32 passengers with sleeper berths. Western Air Express flew two such aircraft between LA and SF. Another local carrier, Trans Western Airlines "TWA" also flew the plane.

"Bob's" is the only photo I have seen with triple blades in the front. In the other examples, they all seemed to sport twin blade propellers - forward and aft. If the same engines were used, it would seem counterintuitive but not impossible for a flying aircraft to have different propeller shapes and forms on different engines.

Luggage label. (Should possibly read: "Fly with WAE - and buy your gas at Bob's!") :bowtie:

Thank you, Rick, I'd made a bet with myself that it would be you or Gaylord Wilshire that'd come up with the info on ths lovely home. As to your slideshow, I wouldn't miss it were it not for my unfortunate circumstances. I live in Houston, far from my Los Angeles, a situation driven solely by economics. My wife and son, also native Angelinos, seem to get home once or twice a year but, alas, Dad doesn't do quite so well. My last visit was in 2008 and it doesn't look like I'll be back before a family wedding in January. Drat! Good luck with the show. I'm sure it'll be a smash.

Dance team divorce, 1958

Dance team divorce, 16 May 1958. Elaine and Rudolpho Andrian. Elaine Andrian, 37 and her husband, Rudolpho, 55, of Los Angeles, motion picture and night club circuit dance team in Santa Monica Superior Court where she has filed for divorce, announced "we will part as husband and wife -- we found we can't make it together -- but we will continue as a dance team".

I don't know Elaine, but I'd say Rudolpho's still got it.

Looks like the two on the left had somebody step on their blue suede shoes.:)

Wish I'd kept mine; probably worth a bunch on eBay these days.

Cheers,

Yeah, me too, Earl. I also had a pair of tan bucks that I admired. Wore 'em with a pair of Levis and a Pendleton shirt (and a 'Balboa' haircut! think Kirk Douglas in Spartacus, buzz cut on top and long on the sides and back. My mother went into a conniption fit when she saw it!) As for these goofballs, I'm beginning to suspect the guy on the right was the 'mastermind' although in this context that's not saying much.

Thanks for the car show pics. I always dissect pics that have old cars in them. So many have been lost. Anyways, a couple of follow-up things:
1) Skoda's are currently in production and available all over Europe.
2) The Berkeley was a "micocar" that was built in England. About 2500 were made.
3) The XP-300 is a famous concept car and was recently shown at the Pebble Beach Concours. Thankfully it has survived.

Thanks Mike, that's all very cool especially about the XP-300. Here's one for you...

The one and only 1948 Buick Streamliner by Norman E. Timbs. It's a shame that this lady was abandoned in the desert for almost 40 years.

The arts & craft design is also apparent in the interior (the wooden molding & room divide visible behind our card playing divas....)

If I lived in that house I would want that 1956 black and white photograph framed and hanging in my dining room.

Was the Hall of Records meant to have an adjoining extension at a later date? a connecting high level bridge perhaps?

Notice in this shot that the facade on the side has a rather plain utilitarian area on it, seems to be lacking any detail, especially in the area with the blocked in windows above the cornice that rings the middle of the building.

The 4 large windows here are at odds to the others on that level, I notice that this is repeated at the other end of the building

Or am I reading too much into it:sly:

I was going to say that maybe that is where it was connected to the old county courthouse. But then I found this picture of both buildings together, and the section in question is still clearly visible. The spot where they were connected was apparently on the western half of the records building (just out of frame in your pic). So... I dunno!

1960s ad/ebay

__[/QUOTE]

1960's ad for what? Besides the obvious (and I can't believe they were sufficently enlightened to allow it) what could this be advertising? Apartment house living? Short haircuts? The two guys pretty much dominate the image but they're not advertising anything in the traditional, 1960's sense. You'd think one of them would be holding up a bottle of Brew 102 or a pack of Chesterfields.

Great timing Gaylord_Wilshire! I do have an update! I was in West Hollywood over the weekend and had lunch with my friend John (the WeHo councilman) yesterday.

The city of WeHo was able to get the state to "dismiss" the Ellis Act on the building. That enabled the city to work with Jerome Nash (building owner) on future pans for the building. On 9/5, they entered into an agreement and issued a conditional use permit to him. He is absolutely required to replace all windows with the ones approved by the city (what started this whole brouhaha), but then he does have the option of using the building as an apartment house, condominium building (they would waive the minimum parking spaces requirement), or convert the building into a boutique hotel.

Mr. Nash has 120 days from 9/5 to submit his final proposal.

Bottom Line, The El Mirador has been saved from ruin or demolition!

Interesting, in 1934 Union Station was going to come all the way to Los Angeles St.

We've seen photographs like this before, maybe we've even seen this very image and I didn't notice (stranger things have happened) but here the plan includes laying the new train station out to Los Angeles Street not Alameda. Have we talked about this before?

It doesn't really matter--it's a great shot whatever the year--but I think this is most likely a Christmas before 1959.... American would probably not have been advertising piston-powered DC7 service so prominently in 1962. AA inaugurated jet service on January 25, 1959, flying its new 707 from LAX to Idlewild/JFK.

Here's the crew posing for a shot before takeoff on the inaugural:

And here's a great shot of a 707 at LAX dated December 26, 1962
