Guess I didn't recognize it un-festooned. Kind of an interesting look into how the city was transforming.

In those days they had a cash box outside by the pumps.....that would be my guess.

Trying to catch up. It says "Zero in on Safety" - the "on" is so small it looks like a smudge on the photo.

It's hard to read in the picture above (the more recent logo is clearer), but the letters are actually BFCL. According to a listing I found on etsy.com:

The BFCL is the International Order of Rainbow Girls (A Masonic Auxiliary), and BFCL stands for Bible Flag Constitution Lambskin (Four symbols of the order).

The first three symbols are pretty clear, the last is in reference to the lambskin apron, an important symbol of the Masons. The material of the Masonic apron—lambskin—is a symbol of innocence.

They cite their source as stichtingargus.nl - it's a long document with the information scattered throughout.

The Wikipedia page on the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls says that "actress Marilyn Monroe was a member of Columbia Assembly #67 in Santa Monica, California (joined under her birth name Norma Jeane Baker in 1941 while still in high school)".

This made me wonder if we'd ever seen interiors of this building before, not counting it's present incarnation as ABC's studio for Jimmy Kimmel. I don't believe so.

All the decorations may have been in honor of a Shriner convention in town (their symbol is on the front of the Examiner building).

The building pictured was put up ca. 1905 and pulled down in 1922.

The current building was permitted that same year for owner Clark J Milliron.

It's only about a week since we've had Julius Shulman pictures of an apartment complex in Palos Verdes, and this one's more conventional. The description calls them "Palos Verdes Apartments", but the title says "Porto Verde Apartments". It's "Job 4719: Kamnitzer and Marks, Palos Verdes Apartments (Palos Verdes Peninsula, Calif.), 1971". I've left out a couple of the color photos and all of the black & white ones. The image below was originally portrait, but seemed to work better cropped to landscape.

The apartments still appear fairly isolated in the 1980 aerial view at Historic Aerials, with no additional buildings around them. That had changed by 1994. The field in the foreground of the first Shulman image became a golf course as recently as sometime between 2005 and 2009. The apartments themselves remain virtually unchanged, at least from the outside. GSV shows the name "Villas at Rancho Palos Verdes" (below) on the signage at 6600 Beachview Drive, but a little Googling suggests that the name has changed again, this time to "Avana Rancho Palos Verdes".

The movie studios employed delivery trikes to haul film cans around the lots. Probably still do.

Do you remember those too e_r?
