MIAMI | Signature Bridge (I-395)

I-395 bridge funded for 2018

Quote:

Major improvements to I-395, including a new signature bridge, are funded for 2018 and preliminary design work continues with an eye toward a January 2015 design completion date, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.

In addition, designers and engineers with the state transportation department have narrowed design options for the bridge from four to two alternatives: Lotus and Wishbone.

“The design has not yet been chosen,” said Tasha Cunningham, spokesperson for the transportation department. “The department is working with the Aesthetic Steering Committee. At this time, both the Wishbone and Lotus designs are being considered.”

Twenty years in the making, Miami city leaders had to fight to get the I-395 project back on track. City commissioners in July announced an agreement with the state for reconstruction of Interstate 395 that calls for a new “signature” bridge near the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.

The project has an estimated construction cost of $500 million to $600 million, in present day dollars, depending on selected structural design.

The reconstruction involves some 1.4 miles of roadway.

The project goes far beyond construction of a new bridge, with a goal of opening up the vistas near the arts center and Museum Park. Maps show the roadway improvements occurring in three zones or segments, from where it joins I-95 on the west and the start of the MacArthur Causeway over Biscayne Bay on the east.

“Preliminary design will be complete by January 2015,” said Ms. Cunningham. “Construction is currently funded beginning in 2018 as a Design/Build/Finance project.”

A fact sheet on the project shows proposed improvements include:

* Building new elevated ramps (one eastbound, one westbound) that will directly link I-95 and I-395.
* Improving roadway design, including updating the alignment and upgrading the roadway surface.
* Creating a visually appealing bridge.
* Building taller structures that will improve the visual quality of the bridge.

Wishbone is the better design for sure! Has Dubai arrived in America? :)

As for the Florida governor, many governors do this. He's not alone in proposing built some massive speculative bridge.

Great design, not so great location. Why not build it on one of the bridges that cross Biscayne Bay? All they are doing is adding flowers to an eyesore in Miami's core.

Lotus has the M for Miami, Lotus is far the better choice. Wishbone is just a common design for a modern bridge that has been seen and done before globally. So, Lotus it is for "M"iami. Even if it's a bit tacky, it is unique.

I prefer Lotus personally. The other like you said looks like every other bridge.

Signature Bridge Accelerated, But Designs Could Be Scrapped; Metromover Will Need To Be Relocated

http://i.imgur.com/sdlMIxX.jpg

Quote:

FDOT’s plan to build a $600 million Signature Bridge in Downtown Miami will require one of the piers supporting the Metromover to be moved.

Dade’s commission will need to approve the pier relocation. Federal officials have already approved it. Federal approval was required, since they provided part of the funding to build the system.

It isn’t clear how disruptive the work would be to passengers. The department is pledging that most of the work will take place during non-operating hours. FDOT is also pledging to keep a corridor open for a mass transit connection to the beach.

Genting had also indicated that they would want to move the Metromover to build Resorts World Miami, but that plan has stalled.

FDOT has recently accelerated the Signature Bridge project, and concept plans and an RFP are now expected to be ready by April. Construction could begin by the end of next year.

Two designs, Wishbone and Lotus, are being considered. However, officials now say that they are would consider a third design if it was proposed by a design-build team.

Design Guidelines For $600 Million Signature Bridge Released

Quote:

FDOT has released design guidelines for the downtown Miami’s signature bridge project, along with a timeline for the bidding process.

At a meeting last month, officials presented an aesthetics manual that is to be used as guidance by design-build teams interested in bidding in the project. Shapes, textures, colors and lighting were among the details released.

FDOT says that the bridge is intended to be a world-class, iconic structure which will serve as a landmark for Miami. They hope to keep costs below $600 million.

Two designs – Wishbone and Lotus, have been selected, although a third option proposed by a design-build team would be considered. The minimum apex above street level will be 245 feet, meaning that it will be dwarfed by neighboring towers such as Marquis, which tops out at about 700 feet.

The bidding process is scheduled to begin next month, and five design-build teams will be selected by the end of the year. The winning bid is expected to be selected by September 2016, and construction could begin by the end of 2016.

Commissioner: Build Baylink Instead Of Signature Bridge

Quote:

Is Baylink more important than a signature bridge?

Miami commissioner Francis Suarez says yes. He recently suggested that funding for the $600 million bridge be diverted to build a train between Miami and Miami Beach, according to Miami Today.

Suarez’s father is Dade commissioner Xavier Suarez, who is also opposed to the bridge. As recently as last year, he pushed for the roadway to be placed underground to remove the blight of a highway cutting through downtown. FDOT has rejected that option.

The signature bridge has been in the works for years and is already funded. Other local politicians worry that if the bridge was cancelled, the funding would be moved elsewhere in the state instead. Miami officials once sued the state when FDOT considered replacing the signature bridge with a less expensive design.

Highways that cut through cities are scars left from the Robert Moses era. Miami would do well to build that tunnel - though with sea levels rising as they are, perhaps not.

Study: Tunnel Would Cost $1.3B More Than Signature Bridge

Quote:

FDOT evaluated a proposal to put a portion of I-395 and Biscayne Boulevard underground, instead of building a Signature Bridge. The results:

The tunnels would cost $1.3 billion more than the Signature Bridge
Both Biscayne Boulevard and I-395 would have to be locked down during Hurricane events due to flooding concerns, closing vital evacuation routes
Metromover would need to be reconstructed, with associated cost and service disruption
Biscayne Boulevard and other nearby streets would need to be closed during construction
Pedestrian crosswalks would be eliminated in some areas near the tunnel. Nearby streets would also need to be elevated, inhibiting access
Likelihood of contaminated soil during excavation. Area was previously occupied by the Belcher Oil Terminal & Tank Farm
Construction would be delayed an extra five years for a Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement
FDOT’s Gus Pego will present the study, along with an update on the Signature Bridge, to Miami commissioners next week.

State nears new I-395 signature bridge downtown

Quote:

The state transportation department is closer than ever to final plans to improve I-395 and build a new signature bridge spanning Biscayne Boulevard in downtown Miami.

If the current timetable unfolds without unexpected detours, work on the massive project should begin within 12 months.

That’s the word from the Florida Department of Transportation.

Five firms approved by the state to enter the final phase of the procurement process are currently preparing final details of price proposals. A bid opening is set for spring.

A public meeting to announce technical scores and open price proposals is scheduled for April 10, Maria I. Perdomo of the transportation department said this week. She is project manager for the I-395 revamp.

The project, which includes improvements to I-95 and 836, has an estimated cost of $800 million and will be accomplished through a team effort.

This should be a transit line, not a "signature bride". All this just to jam thru "Lexus Lanes". The problem is not the Miami side but the beach side. Alton Road and 5th Street aren't going to be magically widened to accommodate the "faster" traffic co1ming over. Silliness. The beach's roads are saturated. There needs to be an alternative to the car if there is to be a successful Convention Center

Judge Allows FDOT To Proceed With Fountain Design For Signature Bridge

Quote:

Two rulings were issued recently, which allows the Florida Department of Transportation to proceed with building “The Fountain,” their chosen design for the proposed $802m Signature Bridge project in downtown Miami.

In March, the Third District Court of Appeal ruled against former Miami commissioner Marc Sarnoff, who had sued FDOT. A 2013 settlement agreement was not enforceable by a Miami-Dade court, according to the ruling. In addition, a lower court decision that denied FDOT’s request to transfer the case to Leon County Circuit Court was ruled incorrect.

In April, the State of Florida Division of Administrative Hearings also ruled in favor of FDOT. Losing bidder Fluor-Astaldi-MCM failed to prove the decisition to award the project to Archer Western- de Moya Joint Venture was clearly erroneous, contrary to competition, arbitrary or capricious, according to a judge.

Award of the project was announced in May 2017. Construction was set to begin in December 2017 with completion in late 2022, but was delayed by the legal action.

Tish Burgher, a Communications Manager for FDOT, confirmed that Fluor Astaldi withdrew their challenge on April 18 following the recommendation issued by an Administrative Law Judge.

The final order was signed by FDOT Secretary Mike Dew on April 30, allowing the department to proceed with the execution of a contract with the “Fountain” team, Archer Western-de Moya. FDOT doesn’t yet have a construction schedule, she said.

Of the $802 million cost, $626 in funds are coming from the State of Florida, including state motor fuels tax, vehicle license fee, documentary stamp collections. The remaining $186 million is being paid for locally by MDX toll revenue bond proceeds.

$802M Signature Bridge Given Notice to Proceed

https://i.imgur.com/cMhN0ZY.jpg

Quote:

Contractors have been given the green light to begin construction on the Signature Bridge project, with a Notice To Proceed issued by FDOT yesterday.

The highlight of the project is the bridge design called the “fountain,” which includes six sweeping arches that FDOT says will redefine Miami’s skyline.

Miami’s first double-deck highway will also be built on State Road 836, from NW 17th Avenue past the I-95 Interchange.

Underneath the bridge, a 55-acre park called Heritage Trail will be created, with the bridge itself to be elevated to allow in more sunlight.

Other improvements include an additional lane on 836. The 836 eastbound ramp to I-95 north, which has been a traffic choke point for decades, will finally be getting another lane.

Archer Western-de Moya Joint Venture is the contractor.

The project will take four years to complete, according to FDOT spokesperson Tish Burgher. An updated schedule is not yet available.

Work Underway On $802M Signature Bridge, Double-Deck Highway

Quote:

The clock is about to start ticking for the contractor working on the $802 million Signature Bridge project, which also includes double decking a portion of the 836 highway.

Under the terms of a design-build contract, the contractor has 4 years to complete the project, excluding holidays, weather, special events, and any unforeseen circumstances. According to Florida Department of Transportation spokesperson Oscar Gonzalez, the clock begins ticking on October 29.

Lane closures were already underway as of last week to allow for surveys and soil borings, in order to gather information for bridge foundation design.

Over the next six months, the contractor expects to complete the following tasks:

Utility relocations
Surveying and Geotechnical Exploration-Test piles
Continue to develop roadway and bridge plans
Construction along I-95 in the median and begin concrete replacement
Widening SR 836 in preparation for double-decking
Construction of the I-395 bridge foundations
The Design Build Team will also be working on design plan submittals and developing a construction schedule during this time.

Completion is expected in Fall of 2023, Gonzalez said.

It was about 6 months ago I recall a discussion with one of my relatives about them getting a summer home in the panhandle. Saying how it doesn't get hurricanes as much as S.Florida. They might want to reconsider.

Don't get me wrong, the building codes in regards to hurricanes are some of the best (newer buildings), but still.

California is a safer bet, but it is expensive and you have to worry about Earthquakes and rogue NK nukes, but hey! HEY! That's the trade off of living in a weather perfect state. Just don't smoke the wrong type of grass, because you might become paranoid of NK nukes. Stick with Indicas and become one with the couch, and the universe.

Speaking of crowds, Miami is the 2nd fastest growing city in the U.S.. Good stuff! Austin being #1 and Seattle #3.

Miami’s New Double Deck Highway: How It Treats The River Underneath, And A Construction Update

Quote:

Miami is building a new Signature Bridge and double-deck highway. Will it bring any improvements to the river running underneath?

That was the subject of a meeting of the Miami River Commission yesterday.

Florida Department of Transportation representatives were in attendance and submitted a presentation stating that building of a new riverwalk was not a part of the construction plans.

The new double-deck highway won’t impede future construction of a riverwalk though, the presentation states. While new piers will be constructed to support the roadway, it will utilize the same footprint as piers already in place supporting the current highway.

The double-deck highway will allow traffic to or from the 836 heading towards Miami Beach, the port tunnel, and I-395 to bypass local traffic exiting or entering I-95.

Preliminary construction of the $802 million Signature Bridge project is already underway, with major construction expected to begin in February or March of 2019. Construction of the pier along the river will begin in August or September of 2019.

Buckle up for The Mother of all highway construction projects. It’s about to start

Quote:

Fasten your seatbelts, Miami, it’s going to be a long and bumpy ride. Gird yourself. Learn how to meditate in your car. Stock up on podcasts. Or, better yet, leave town for four years.

The Mother of all highway construction projects commences Monday with the initial stage of the $800 million redesign of Interstate 395, which will encompass significant stretches of I-95 and State Road 836.

Expect a clusterjam, with three highways that feed downtown Miami, Miami Beach and the Civic Center area torn up. A signature bridge that resembles a high-tech tarantula will be built over Biscayne Boulevard. A double-decker span will vault over I-95 to the MacArthur Causeway. Brace for lane closures, street closures and exit closures.

While the Florida Department of Transportation, Miami-Dade Expressway Authority and their contractors will try to minimize disruption, pain is guaranteed in perpetually clogged South Florida, where orange and white barricades are as much a part of the scenery as palm trees.

ut by the time the ambitious rearrangement is completed in fall 2023 — want to bet on that deadline? — a beautiful mile-long pathway, artsy plazas, green gardens and 30 acres of urban parkland will replace the blighted, cave-like space crouching beneath I-395 that became an encampment for homeless people and opioid addicts. Overtown, once the “Harlem of the South,” will be rid of the suffocating overpasses and embankments that ripped through the neighborhood in the 1960s and left a sun-deprived wasteland of concrete columns. The city’s cultural gems —the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, Frost Science Museum and Perez Art Museum — will be better connected to each other, Museum Park and the waterfront. In theory, it will be easier to get in and out of downtown and to traverse the choked, messy interchange, although there’s little doubt the new roadways will induce more traffic.

Surveying and geotechnical testing that involves driving exploratory test piles along I-395 is underway, according to FDOT spokesperson Oscar Gonzalez.

[....]

By March or April, major foundation work for the signature bridge will begin in the area of Northeast 12th Street between Biscayne Boulevard and Northeast 2nd Avenue. The section of Northeast 12th Street between the Boulevard and Northeast 2nd Avenue will be closed. Traffic will be re-routed to Northeast 13th Street, which will be widened to three lanes between the Boulevard and Northeast Second Avenue.

At the same time, widening work on SR 836 around Northwest 17th Avenue will start in preparation for the construction of the double-decked section of 836.

[...]

The defining element of the reconstruction project is the six-arched, 1,025-foot suspension bridge, lit with programmable LEDs, which is meant to recall a spouting fountain. The runner-up design, favored by a local panel during the controversial selection process, featured a pair of support pylons evoking dancers on the threshold of the Arsht Center.

The 1.4-mile-long 395 expressway will be split into two elevated spans, one going east and the other west, both situated slightly north of where it is now. Only a quarter of the 440 support columns will exist when it’s finished. Eastbound off-ramps at Northeast Second Avenue will be moved west to North Miami Avenue and westbound on-ramps at Northeast First Avenue will be shifted west to North Miami Avenue.

The double-decking of 836 will start west of the Miami River near the toll gantry with an elevation of 60 feet as it approaches Overtown. The viaduct will allow drivers to bypass the midtown interchange and its ramps and continue east to Watson Island and Miami Beach. The hope is that the existing 836 on the lower level will allow drivers to enter and exit from local roads and I-95 and reduce the dangerous “weaving movements” of drivers trying to maneuver into their desired lanes. The eastbound 836 ramp to northbound I-95 will get an additional lane to reduce congestion.

FINAL HEIGHT OF MIAMI’S ‘BRIDGE FOR THE AGES’ HAS BEEN APPROVED, & CRANES WILL NOW BE INSTALLED

https://i.imgur.com/CWju1xP.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/F4Tuq4y.jpg

Quote:

The final height for Miami’s Signature Bridge was approved by the Federal Aviation Administration this week.

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez has called the project “a bridge for the ages” in a 2017 memo.

A total of six arches are planned, with the tallest at 330 feet above ground:

Arch 1 – 180 feet above ground, 186 feet above sea level
Arch 2 – 230 feet above ground, 237 feet above sea level
Arch 3 – 180 feet above ground, 187 feet above sea level
Arch 4 – 250 feet above ground, 253 feet above sea level
Arch 5 – 330 feet above ground, 332 feet above sea level
Arch 6 – 250 feet above ground, 252 feet above sea level
All of the arches had their heights approved by the FAA last week, with review taking about ten months following a November 2018 application.

A total of four boom cranes were also approved for installation. Each crane will be installed this month at a height of 420 feet above ground, and will stay in place until February 2021.

[...]

Completion is expected in 2023, but contractors say that traffic relief for motorists will begin much earlier. Within 12 months of the start of construction, newly added lanes and ramps will already start to improve the flow of vehicles, they say.

If they had tunneled the highway, it would have been a lot better for Miami than this lipstick on a pig attempt. I mean, it's better than nothing, but if that ugly interstate was underground, the city would have become much prettier overall. Also the design reminds me of Mickey D's, kinda tacky. Looks like some Route 66 nonsense, lol!

There's a god damn reason why cities all over the USA are burying their old highways that ruin the downtown areas. They are as ugly as a body builder who had too many steroids.

Now Miami has a monument to look at in this Golden Arches thingy, but it still is stuck with a noisey, polluting piece of crap going into the city, hurting the downtown's ovreall appeal and taking up valuable space. Should have pulled a Boston.
