HossC, thanks for this post! A group of us have an acquaintance who was born in 1957 and is turning fifty-seven this year! This would be a great suggestion to celebrate that birthday in! Unique!

Is the photo Spade or someone else? Looks like Spade to me....western suit, boots and his band members on site.

Western Swing musician Spade Cooley was indicted on April 26, 1961 by a Kern County grand jury for the April 3 murder of his wife at the couple's Willow Springs home.

Spade was convicted of first-degree murder by a Kern County, CA jury on August 21, 1961 after unexpectedly withdrawing an insanity plea. He was spared death in the gas chamber and sentenced to life in prison.

Was Spade on 90 day parole before he was sent to prison? He meets Nixon after he was convicted? Historically all of this is interesting and most curious.

351 Foothill Road is still there and still an animal hospital. Googling the address gives results for Dr Shipp’s Animal Hospital and the Amanda Foundation - both names appear on the circular sign outside. The latter is described as "the only non-profit animal charity in the Los Angeles area to own and operate our own full service Veterinary practice."

BTW, the Quick Sign Service store at 636 N Western has the name Renfro at the top of the window. The 1926 CD names the owner as Leonard E Renfro.

The source suggests the compliation of photos is a mish mash of dates from both the '56 and '60 presidential campaigns. One of the photos bears a November '61 date. However, it is likely that the Spade Cooley photo was before the '60 election and thus, would have predated Mrs. Cooley's alleged "fall in the shower" by many months. I agree that it looks that way, but I think that's down to the most recent paint scheme. Compare it with the 2011 image below. I haven't managed to find any vintage pictures of the building either with or without extra floors. The property websites suggest a build date of 1930.

Yes, Godzilla, Westside Hospital occupied the Green Spray building. As I recall, the hospital laboratories were in that space.

I was at that hospital a couple of times in the mid-eighties - certainly nothing remarkable about it then. Nursing home clientele, no Marilyn, typical community hospital of its time.

Here is a Bing bird's-eye view of the place, and you can see by comparing the roof in the 1930s views, it's the same building today.

I noticed that four prewar buildings remain at West 6th and Oxford, making it a rare intersection. I couldn't find much on the origins of any of the four—anyone? Perhaps an intact junction is less rare than I think. Can anyone find others?

Wurdeman & Becket Streamline Moderne in West Hollywood
 
Hi everyone!

Kim Cooper and Richard Schave of Esotouric suggested we start posting here.

We're trying to save the Wurdeman & Becket Streamline Moderne at 9080 Santa Monica Blvd in West Hollywood.

Dr. Eugene C Jones built his Dog and Cat Hospital in 1928 and hired Walter Wurdeman and Welton Becket to re-design the facade, interior and make an addition to the east side of the building in 1938.

Such a fantastic photo! The photo album it came from was actually owned by the Jones family. (We tried to get it on ebay.) Strange coincidence.

Interior of Wurdeman & Becket Streamline Moderne in West Hollyood
 
Wurdeman & Becket designed the entire interior of Dr Jones' Dog and Cat Hospital. This photo is from 1939/1940 and represents their early work and an excellent example of their Total Design.

Here's a photo of one of the exam/surgery rooms in the Dog and Cat Hospital.

Most dogs and cats find this room a very scary place to be. I know that all of mine did over a period of 40 years. How did I know? They were shaking and had a terrified look in their eyes.
