Johnny Weismuller will always be Tarzan for me
 

Johnny Weissmuller with his yodel will be Tarzan that people remember. The original Weissmuller Tarzan film, "Tarzan and his Mate" (1932) caused a sensation. Slim and shapely Maureen O'Sullivan as "Jane" skinny dipped and almost single handedly helped launch the Bream production codes and stirred the juices of countless adolescent boys, and men as well. Weissmuller was not known for his intellect (Cheetah was the brains of the outfit), but was very good in the role. As an Olympic swimming champ he excelled in the swimming scenes, and swung like a pro in the vines. Apparently some of the jungle scenes were filmed at the L.A. Arboretum ("Lucky" Baldwin estate) in Arcadia near Santa Anita racetrack.

The Tarzan film in the late 1980s was quite good, where Tarzan returned to England for a while, but didn't like it.

Yeah, I'm leaning toward Johnny Weissmuller.

Here's a fantastic Kodachrome image showing a fire at Signal Hill in 1958.

"This is from a Long Beach/Signal Hill refinery fire in 1958 (there was also a refinery fire here in the 30's) After this burned down in 1958 they put a auto wrecking yard over it,
then in the late 80's it became an auto-mall. I use to work at a dealer there and we had gas collection lines/bladder under the asphalt and a shed to burn off accumulated gases.
When they would tear into the dirt to build something the stench of chemicals and crude oil was literally sickening. My dad and grandfather use to work in the oil business in Socal
from the 40's-80-s and I have heard some stories of how they use to do things." -mikes96GTI

okay, I have a question if you don't mind. What exactly is the color of that Corvette? -It's really spectacular!

My cousin had a vintage Thunderbird that same color and I remember it had a really cool name. (something romantic)

Looks like Tarzan & Jane are having fun making "Boy" on that elephant.

Funny how they always used Indian elephants in Tarzan films. And then we have California live oaks and sycamores in the African rain forest. Minor quibbles.

The Corvette is a '55--the color, as it was called that model year, is Corvette Copper. (Mike Henry would have been very well color-coordinated for a copper '55 Vette, which had a dark beige interior.) Marketing departments usually had more imaginative names for car colors--in 1956, a similar Corvette color was called Aztec Copper. The '57 Thunderbird had a color called Thunderbird Bronze...a coppery color in '58 was called Palamino Tan; in '59, there was a Tahitian Bronze. Colors were often recycled over the years and switched between a manufacturer's models, with varying names.

Hancock Fire
 

Hancock Fire probably refers to Hancock Oil and their refinery. They were a well know brand at the time and were purchased by Signal Oil in the 50's. Hancock Park is named after Hancock Family.

My mother worked at the Community Chest office in the 1940's. I remember we had a red plastic feather that was a "phone dialer" in the days of rotary phones and it said Community Chest on the back. I think I may still have it somewhere. (I save a lot of junk)

Cheeta's wiki page says "Dinky" bit Mike Henry (Tarzan) in 1965 and was put down. (There's a lotta info on that page, so maybe I missed the nose incident.)
