San Francisco would be the New York of California except New Yorkers generally view idiosyncratic behavior as a fact of life in the big city. Listening to the way some people talk on here, every bum taking a shit on a San Francisco sidewalk is the sign of the impending collapse of civilization. In New York that's something you'd forget about by the time you got to the elevator at your office.

Centropolis Nov 21, 2020 5:13 PM

the west coast seems like a weird combination of more tolerance and engagement of it (both ways) combined with more annoyance by it.

but anecdotally california just has way more precariousness/homeless people on the ground it seems.

I miss being in a cozy, noisy pub with a great tune in the background, good company, and a pint of beer in my hand—with a long evening ahead of me of dining and...well... being around others.

Anybody else relate?

You write that like seeing human feces on every street corner is a common sight around the country. It isn't.

Compared to SF, NY (Manhattan at least) is pristine. No comparison.

Most definitely. And where I live at least that's verboten until January 11 at least. And has been verboten for the past month or two.

Where I live, because Los Angeles County's COVID-19 infections have been spiking, the County health department has ordered that even outdoor dining at restaurants is prohibited beginning tomorrow at 10pm, through at least December 21st; only takeout, deliveries and drive-thru will be allowed.

However, because the City of Pasadena has its own health department, the Pasadena City Council has decided to still allow outdoor dining at its restaurants... so at least my partner and I still have an option.

A bit of background; in California, health departments are a County entity. However, 3 cities in LA County (Pasadena, Long Beach and Vernon) and one city in the Bay Area (Berkeley) have their own health departments.

From the LA Times:

Link: Pasadena will allow outdoor dining to continue despite L.A. County health order

https://ca-times.brightspotcdn.com/d...irus-05.FO.jpg
Patrons enjoy dinner outside Perle Restaurant in Pasadena. The City Council will not halt outdoor dining on Wednesday. Pasadena has its own public health department. (Francine Orr/Los Angeles Times)

The second wave is already forming in São Paulo and in a country as a whole.

Moving daily average is still at 400-500 deaths, but the number of daily cases skyrocketed in the past ten days. As in the beginning, it's reaching the upper classes firstly and many of those upscale hospitals are close to be out of room.

I don't think the city will stop again as people can't take it anymore.

I have to agree with JManc. Certainly pre-COVID NYC was definitely more orderly in terms of scatological and psychological weirdness than SF was. At least in the more visible heavily-trafficked areas.

Of course we don't know what awaits us in the post-COVID world.

Because it is. SF is full of litter everywhere and while NY is noted for overflowing trash cans along the street, it's cleaner and better maintained.

I guess to each their own. This is anecdotal, but I don't think I've ever even seen a rat in SF in all the times I've been there. But I've had so many rats run across my feet in Manhattan that I won't even wear open shoes there.

I imagine SF has more human feces laying about. As far as rats, maybe there are less coyotes in Manhattan to control the rat population? Are there any natural predators there?

There are hawks and some raccoons, but otherwise there's nowhere for a big terrestrial predator to live in Manhattan since the human population is so dense.

Does SF still have any ghettos other than what's left of the Tenderloin? Manhattan still has legit ghettos, too.

Not downtown, although you could make an argument for Chinatown. Outside of the downtown core, there is Bayview-Hunters Point near where Candlestick Park used to be.

Oh, Lord. I remember a deep foundation hole in the Tenderloin where a building had been torn down but nothing yet built. The bottom of the hole was full of litter and garbage and crawling with rats as big as your average house kitty (I had to stare at them a while to be sure they were rats they were so big).

I would be quite astonished to see any coyote wandering nearby anything human or supposedly civilized.

They are very cute and basically friendly to us, but would be extremely elusive. They've been described as devils by farmers breeding cattle in NA, as if they were legendary ferocious beasts, then systematically shot down. Much like wolves, except they're smaller, cuter and certainly less aggressive.
No wonder they would run away from humans.

Coyotes are prevalent throughout portions of the Los Angeles area, including the Hollywood Hills. Nextdoor app users in LA post warnings of Coyote sightings almost everyday.

"Cute" is subjective. I saw many coyotes during my 20 years in Los Angeles. I did not find them cute. They typically look mangy. They are also known for attacking, killing and eating pets (dogs and cats).

I'm not advocating harming coyotes.

FYI: I'm in Arizona right now and I can go out almost any evening around 11 PM and hear them howling. Sometimes they sound so close it seems like they are just outside my garden wall. Maybe they are.

Coyotes, in fact, adapt very well to cohabitation with humans as log as the humans don't try to hunt them to extinction (which isn't easy--various attempts to eradicate them from Golden Gate Park because of attacks on pet dogs have failed miserably).

Like those in Colorado's winter. They are good looking animals.

To be honest, I never saw any in person. We don't have any here. They are something American.
But we had this show that made me laugh to tears as a kid.

When I briefly lived up in Carefree just north of Scottsdale, packs of coyotes would wander across my property all the time. Twice my largish dog gave chase to a pack of these critters. I was terrified watching the pack disperse and then circle back up around my still charging dog. Fortunately they did not attack my dog and slunk away without an actual struggle. They can be quite surly, but they never tried to harm me and chose to avoid a real fights with my 80 pound dog. I think they prefer smaller prey. During the summer months, coyotes were especially visible, visiting swimming pools for water and sometimes seeking shade against retaining walls. I heard howling every night and learned to love the sound of it. Although less numerous, there are coyotes in the greenbelt below my house here in Austin who have similar behaviors and only seem to be a danger to small animals.

You don't have to wait for him. I have completely given myself over to the Northern CA trend that is Allbirds slip-ons and my feet love me for it (young-uns may prefer the wool sneakers--"Wool Runners"--but I like the sustainable plant-based slip-on "Tree Loungers".

Quote:

How Allbirds Became Silicon Valley’s Favorite Sneaker
By Jacob Gallagher
Nov. 10, 2020 4:19 pm ET

ALLBIRDS ARE the squint-and-you’ll-miss-’em shoes that ate the tech world. Tejas Priyadarshan, 22, a data scientist for a website in Berkeley, Calif., estimated that over half of his colleagues wear these spartan wool sneakers, completely free of stripes, swooshes, pixelated patterns and other design flourishes. Jotham Ndugga-Kabuye, 32, a social media director in Oakland, Calif., recalled that when he worked for a plant-based meat substitute company headquartered in the Bay Area, “every single engineer and accounting person” wore Allbirds.

Four years after humbly launching its sneakers as an online-only disrupter product, the San Francisco-based Allbirds brand has gone relatively mainstream. It now has 22 stores in cities across the world, including Berlin, Shanghai and Auckland. Many people who wouldn’t know iOS from Intel own a pair of its $95 lace-up Wool Runners or $135 ankle-high Mizzles. Yet no one favors Allbirds more compulsively or reflexively than “tech bros”—a loose term for those digital zealots, male or female, who clock time at a startup or internet-focused company, clutching smartphones, begging for a Clubhouse invite and worshiping Elon Musk . . . .

. . . Allbirds deliver supreme comfort, a massive plus in an industry that prioritizes coziness, where suits are as outmoded as a click-wheel iPod. In Silicon Valley, Allbirds can come across as polished. They’re stylish enough “that you can also wear them to a sales meeting,” said Mr. Ndugga-Kabuye . . . .

You sound like an urban resident who has never had a druggie throw a used needle at him or felt threatened by a group of obnoxious teens on the bus (or in COVID times, an unmasked patron at CVS). I live in a "progressive" paradise where everything is tolerated from the protected class who live on the streets and don't work but can be dragooned to the polls every election day. I wish there were some way to cross-reference the site Nextdoor for central San Francisco so you could see the incessant posts about uncontrolled shoplifting, package thievery, car break-ins, even pet-stealing. Sitting in a fast food joint I've had bums just occupying tables (not buying anything) throw debris at me. I've had them plop down at my table and start harrassing me. You need to be prepared for anything (lately that includes a complete failure of "distancing" by unmasked/unwashed bums, just to touch on the topic here). And the size of the already inadequate, do-nothing police force was just reduced further by voter action at the polls.

^ Excuse my French, but this is just a motherfucking feat. We don't know how you guys do that where I am in France. Are you guys totally shut down to the world or something?
For example, how does the youth act in your country? Over here, youngsters go depressed if you deprive them from their weekly parties, their college mates and so on. So a lot of them keep spreading the virus by their undisciplined attitude, but I personally can't even blame on them, because I would've done the same and possibly worse when I was 20.

Anyway, the so called 2nd wave is going under control here, while the government, their advisors, scientists were freaking out a couple of weeks ago.
So restrictions are about to be eased for Christmas and New Year's Eve. But then, I would expect a "3rd wave" for February and March. Lol.

Only a vaccine can effectively free us from that curse. But the French (including myself) are a bit skeptical about the latest announcements. We're like - how did the Pfizer/BioNThec consortium or Moderna manage to develop their vaccines so fast, while it normally takes at least 2 years to seriously make it? Sure, the latest tech can make their tests faster, but it's still a bit astonishing, if not uncertain. So approval to their products might take a little time here. No doubt the French bureaucracy will carefully watch them anyway.

Was checking the NYC cams, and 5th Avenue is poppin!

Glad to see the crowds, although not the madness that it was a year ago at this same time, but picking up.

Usually you can't move one centimeter without pulling a Harvey Weinstein during the month of December on any street north of 30th.

Once this pandemic is over, I'm sure the crowds will reach madness level, which is how I like it. Car gridlock and people gridlock, the way NYC should be from March to mid January, lowering down for February, and than back to the Madness.
