Here's a press photo that we haven't seen on NLA.

It shows failed (understatement) presidential candidate Al Landon among the thongs throngs in front of the Biltmore Hotel in 1936.

Where's Waldo ALF?..(because I can't find him)

I like how the photo gives a good look at all the hotels up Olive Street. . .San Carlos Hotel. . .Hotel Trenton. . .and um . . .a couple of others.

Here's the info.

My grandmother's sister was married to Alf's brother. (or maybe he was a cousin )

So how long did the city lease out land in Griffith Park?..The photograph looks quite old.

A closer look.

I tried finding some Coliseum "rally" photos, but haven't.

I like that photo you discovered. With that kind of crowd, Alf must've thought he had a chance!

Alf Landon's campaign colors were brown and yellow because he was from Kansas and he used the sunflower for inspiration and dozens of various campaign buttons were produced using the image, some with yellow felt sunflower petals:

Wonder if they knew what this meant. Apparently there's only a couple known buttons like this one, but no one knows what it means:

Hake's recently sold one for near $700!

FWIW, I see:

PASTURAGE
HORSES AND MULES ONLY
$2.50 A MONTH
WILLIAM COLAN

Not sure about the last name, but it is a real name. Maybe there's software that can merge the two signs together to get a clearer image. Or somebody could message the ebay seller.

Oh no! I forgot something really interesting about the Pasture/Tenant Griffith Park photograph.

The photographer's business card was attached to the back.

How did I forget that!? *slaps forehead*

Just to say hello.

A mystery location.

Here's a soldier posing for a 'novelty' photo in Los Angeles, 1943.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/kEI2Np.jpg

Tweaked a bit. Enlarged and lightened.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/Fb4lSd.jpg

I recognize the Hall of Records building but that's about it.

If you look at the back the photo you can see that it was processed on thin paper.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/aXDu0R.jpg

Does anyone know the name of this kind of 'on-the-spot' photo processing? (as you can see the result is mediocre at best)

I think the word above motel might be Cash. . .Eden. . .or Open.

What do you peeps think?

I believe the Hall of Justice is the building on the left, in the picture of the soldier posted by ethereal reality

eBay link to the above photo of the car lot.

Yes, Noir Lady, the photo of the soldier is flipped. The other building is the Federal courthouse, and it was taken at about Main and Aliso.

GaylordWilshire, great find!

Just to add a side note, the midnight blue roadster in the used car lot is a 1936 Cord. Bit of a rara avis even in the early 1950s...

Thanks for figuring out the location of the used car lot, GW.

Depression era Los Angeles rppc.

Seller's description:.."Shady Nook Camp (Auto Camp) Los Angeles - Real Photo Post Card RPPC"

The reverse.

I found a Sierra Street in Torrance and in El Segundo but neither location seems hilly enough. (judging by the house on the hill in the left background of the rppc)

For search purposes:..Shady Nook Camp - 507 Sierra St. - Los Angeles

e_r, the best I can come up so far is this question from p. 15 from a 1929 Mathematics Course of Study from the Long Beach Board of Education. Is the question making use of real facts, or totally made up?

"Jane wants to give her father a drawing of how to get to their mountain cabin. It is 8 mi. east on Foothill Blvd., then north on the Mt. Baldy road for 9 1/2 mi. to Shady Nook Camp. Should Jane let 1 in. equal 2 mi. or 8 in. equal 1 mi. or 1/4 in. equal 1 mi. in making the drawing for her father? Draw the route."

My characteristic answer to the question would be, "Teacher, what does 'should' mean here? Are we imposing false moralistic or personal values on Jane when she should be allowed to express her inner creative ethos without restriction?"

E_R, where did you find the picture of the soldier standing in front of the Hall of Records Building in 1943? I think I posted it here once. Recollect it being in someone's scrapbook with other items, and my memory thinks there was also a program from an early performance of West Side Story or something, in the '50s.

Of course, one may have always thought when you remember something it's true, but that doesn't seem to be the case as the years go by. :uhh:
