Looking at the 54th St. sign, it says 1100 but doesn't indicate E or W which seems to be the standard in L.A.

Another clue may be what appears to be a very large building looming over the ones in the foreground.

If anyone might be interested:

https://www.laconservancy.org/sites/...%20%283%29.png

It'll be presented on Zoom three times this month. (The Los Angeles Conservancy.) Click HERE for more information.

I'm going to do it. I'll see if there's anything new that hasn't been posted on NLA previously!

And what about this sign? I can't quite figure it out.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/hzbEFv.jpg
detail

It almost looks like a banner attached to the pole but now I see that there's a bracket at the bottom attached to the building. (and another bracket on the roof, I think)

PLUS. . .what does it say on the sign? At first glance I thought it spelled out "restaurant" but now I see that's not case.
The first three letters appear to be R E A then a dash - then E S and another dash - then an A underlined with a dash - and finally, a squashed E (?)

It's probably something obvious & I'm going to be embarrassed.

On the right you can see the large building in the distance mentioned by Bristolian. :previous:

That's the most Los Angeles thing about it --- The sign says "REAL ESTATE"

Thanks Snix.

I was beginning to think it was one of these homemade optical illusion signs.

If you're wondering what it says it says J E S U S.

My grandfather used to make these crazy signs but instead of Jesus he used dirty words.

you can buy this one for $33

[grainy B&W photo]
JOE Los Angeles 1980[/url]

On flickr, they're trying to figure out where this photograph was taken in the late 1970s (or early 80s)
Even the photographer (Joe) doesn't remember where he was when he took it. I thought we might lend them a hand.

.

The car closest to the camera appears to be, if I'm not mistaken, a down-sized Oldsmobile Delta 88 coupe. Down-sized "full-size" GM cars didn't happen until 1977.

But the grainy B&W makes the image look so much older.
There was color in 1977.
Believe me.
I was there.

As you can see it was quite popular on eBay.

I don't know if this was taken while on location for one of those 1960s beach movies or if they're preparing for a fashion shoot of some kind.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/jhzDJU.jpg

If I had to guess I'd say this is somewhere. .um. .north of Malibu. ...(my Sherlock bona-fides) lol

So which one of these lovely ladies Bunny Yeager?

The culvert reminds me of the scene in Chinatown where the bad hombres manipulate the water supply by releasing fresh water into the ocean.
.

I believe Bunny is the lady on the far right in sunglasses.

ethereal_reality Dec 4, 2021 8:30 PM

File this under:..MAKING A MOUNTAIN OUT OF A MOLE HILL.

.
I believe you might be correct, JMR. .........or perhaps Bunny isn't in the photograph at all.

The majority of the photographs on eBay are from the 'Bunny Yeager Estate'.
After years of modeling, Bunny became a well known photographer. (mostly of other pin-ups)
I noticed that photographs taken by Ms. Yeager (as a professional photographer) are often mislabeled & name her as the subject matter instead of the photographer. (when, in fact, the photographs are of some other pin-up)

AND to make it even more confusing Bunny Yeager took a lot of self-portraits.

For instance. .

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/OOFb0n.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...923/GcWFyF.jpg

But is this really a self-portrait. . .or a photograph of someone else taking a self-portrait.

Then there's this one from the Bunny Yeager Estate.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/3qsPIb.jpg
eBay

"BUNNY YEAGER Self Portrait."

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/923/TByMkp.jpg
eBay (this negative is no longer listed. . .but reprints are available. .which are much cheaper obviously)

But Bunny is usually a blonde. .soooooooo. . .is this her? ...or someone else?
Whoever she is, she certainly isn't the blonde woman in the first "self portrait". (I realize women dye their hair but they don't even look alike)

Here's another one that I find a bit confusing.

note that Bunny's camera is in the photograph. .and so is she (supposedly)

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/SVywbs.jpg
eBay

This is from the bottom of the photograph.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/vxJm99.jpg

so. . ..um. . it's copyrighted by Bunny Yeager but. . .Oh, never mind.

I was hoping this amateur 8mm film, that I happened upon a few days ago, was still listed on eBay. . .but I can't locate it again.

I am sure most of the locations are instantly recognizable to you noirishers. The only frame I'm not 100% sure about is the one with the cars entering through a gate. (I'm guessing it's Forest Lawn)

The last time I looked, before the film disappeared, was a bid of $50 dollars.

I haven't heard about this before, either. It looks like this photo began appearing online a couple years ago when Jim Heimann's 3rd book about L.A. architecture was published, California Crazy.

The only other thing I could find about it was on Martin Turnbull's site, where he has this newspaper ad, from the Los Angeles Evening Herald, August 24, 1916.

hmm. . .so the giant mailbox was a mimetic novelty built by a real estate company to lure potential buyers to an area called "THE NEW TOWN"

. . .but where exactly was this 'New Town' located?

P.S...The giant mailbox made me think of the 'Giant Sphinx' that once stood at 537 No. Fairfax Ave.

The swastika was a symbol of well being in India before the Nazi's co-opted it.

Didn't some Indian tribes, I believe the Navajos, use it also? The Nazis basically stole it and forever tarnished it.

It is used as a symbol of divinity and spirituality in Indian religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.

Great video, Horace. Starting at about 6:45, the cameraman is riding along S Mariposa Avenue viewing residences on the west side of the street--at 7:05 is 331 S Mariposa, the story of which, including a good noir tale, is here:

Yes, thanks for that video. I was wondering if anyone would know where any of those houses are!

I liked the views of Central Park; a year later it would become Pershing Square.

Are these all the names it was previously known by?

Originally known as St. Vincent’s Park.
1870 officially named Los Angeles Park.
1886 renamed 6th Street Park.
Early 1890's renamed Central Park.
Then Pershing Square in November 1918.

FYI: On that link page is an entire list of what you can see on the 8 1/2 minute video.

Of course you're both correct.

The 'good luck' swastika is found on a wide variety of unlikely objects. . .

. . .like this 11 ft. surfboard.

"Pacific System(s) Homes was an early 20th century Los Angeles-based construction company that specialized in prefabricated houses. Meyers Butte, son of the owner, became hooked on surfing during a trip to Hawaii in the 1920s, and convinced his father to build a Pacific System Homes surfboard to market to local surfers. In the early 1930s, Pacific System Homes introduced the Swastika model surfboard, the first commercially produced surfboard line, so-named for the swastika design that marked each board. Although a symbol of harmony and good luck in various cultures around the world, the swastika disappeared from Pacific System Homes surfboards with the rise of Nazi Germany, and the company changed the name to Waikiki Surf-Boards in 1938. Pacific System Homes innovated the use of multi-wood laminates to lighten the board. This board is redwood-edged balsa held together by recently invented waterproof glues. The small swastika design is visible at the base of the tail."
