Hmmmm, I don't know why the state would be contributing, considering UC is a private institution...however, the federal government/Dept of Energy granted $150 million to Fermilab and Argonne each for quantum computing science and development, and both are administered/managed along with UC, so perhaps that's where public funds are coming from  Maybe I'm wrong..

The Governor said he considers quantum initiatives to be so important to the economic future of the state that he is committing $200 million to the project. $100 million for UIC, the state's flagship university and $100 million to UChicago, the state's leading private school and quantum powerhouse. :)

He wants to create a Quantum Silicon Valley in Illinois.

Appreciate the clarification, I was not aware of the additional state investment, on top of what the state is investing in DPI.

I hope the state can keep the necessary momentum to make Illinois the 'Quantum State' (pun intended :D)

Did they knock down that last remaining house by the parking garage / ER to make way for this High Bay building?

LOL, I love physics puns - these made my day, thanks :)

I do hope Chicago and Illinois at large can keep it going with respect to Quantum computing and research. I hope that talent, ideas and capital do not end up going elsewhere in the country.

WestsideLA, I'm not sure what happened with that house/if it's still standing or not. Although I thought all of those 3 flats were owned by UC already

"McCabe said the school has been focusing on an organized development of “campus south” that will include a landscaped walkway along 61st Street, which used to be lined with parking lots and the backs of buildings. Also under construction is a privately owned hotel, the Study Hotel."

(From above article about Rube...)

Does anyone know anything about this landscaped walkway along 61st Street?

I wonder if the University is about to announce the new Molecular Engineering Building. They just announced a big press conference with the national labs and UIUC.::

Unlocking the #Quantum Economy: on April 7th, join leading experts from government, academia, and the private sector for an important announcement, followed by a virtual panel discussion hosted by the University of Chicago.

Topic
UNLOCKING THE QUANTUM ECONOMY
Description
You are invited to join leading experts from government, industry and academia for a virtual panel discussion hosted by the University of Chicago. Quantum technology is a rapidly emerging area that has the potential to transform industries in the same way that the Internet has reshaped the world in recent decades.

At this event, experts will describe how Chicago—and the state of Illinois—is well-positioned to be the center of the quantum world just as Silicon Valley became the center of the tech revolution.
